Nydestedt, Olivia, and Amanda Sylvan.
RUGGERI, MARIA RITA GIUSEPPINA. "'CON ALEGREZZA DE CUORE'. LETTERE DELLA CONTESSA MARGHERITA TRIVULZIO AL CARDINAL FEDERICO BORROMEO CONSERVATE PRESSO LA BIBLIOTECA AMBROSIANA DI MILANO." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/46247.
Full textThis research provides the critical edition of over four hundred letters sent by the countess Margherita Trivulzio to her son, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, between 1586-1601. The study of this nucleus of letters allows one not only to shed new light on the figure of Borromeo, analysing his family relationships, but allows a particular focus on a personality, who has so far remained little known and yet worthy of being discovered: that of the noble Trivulzio. Starting from the study of the examined epistles, the following analysis aims to reconstruct the biographical profile, the religious background and the cultural importance of the countess – the latter being investigated as well in terms of linguistic analysis – while at the same time it offers a possible itinerary of reading the numerous letters addressed to the famous founder of the Ambrosian Library of Milan.
Vázquez, Sedano Alexis. "Essays in contest theory: fostering competition in contests." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/403803.
Full textThis thesis consists of three essays in Contest Theory. The theory of contests studies situations where individuals compete to win a prize. Underperformance in contests naturally arises for several reasons, like lack of information or group conflict. The aim of this thesis is to find solutions to overcome this problem. The first chapter addresses conflicts between two groups when trying to win a public prize and analyzes how these contests are affected when groups are led by an organizer with the capacity to impose transfers to share the costs of individual efforts within the group. We first describe centralized levels of group effort - those that organizers wish to attain - and compare with efforts when individuals act non-cooperatively. In the model a group underperforms when effort exerted by individuals in the non-cooperative setting is smaller than the centralized group effort. Otherwise, the group outperforms. We show that the larger group always underperforms, while the smaller one only does so if its size is sufficiently close to the larger group or otherwise outperforms. Second, we characterize cost sharing schemes that implement group centralized levels of effort. These schemes consist of sharing costs in an egalitarian way. And third, we examine the game where organizers compete strategically in setting the cost-sharing scheme of their group. We show that while the cost-sharing scheme is the same for the larger group that in the implementation case, it is different for the smaller group. The second chapter studies the design of a contest between two possible budget constrained players when the organizer of the contest is not informed about the actual size of budgets and where the objective is to maximize aggregate effort. We define the optimal effort as the maximum levels of effort achievable in a situation of complete information. When the organizer has complete information, effort is maximized when the contest is biased towards the constrained player in case they have different budgets. When the organizer has incomplete information, we show that the previous design fails to maximize aggregate effort, since unconstrained players lie about their budgets in order to ensure a favorable position in the contest. We show that there is a mechanism that implements the optimal effort. This mechanism consists of offering lower prizes to players that claim to be constrained to induce unconstrained players to report their true budget. The third chapter studies situations where individuals compete to avoid a bad, using the reverse lottery contest model introduced by Fu et al. (2014). We study an application in which a government needs to allocate a dump in a region and wants to maximize lobbying. The government decides either to divide this dump in smaller pieces or not, considering that lobbies influence the government to avoid such bads in their region. We show that lobbying is maximized when the government does not divide the dump. We also compare the properties of the reverse lottery contest with the conventional lottery contest. In a framework in which individuals compete to win many prizes and avoid many bads, we show that aggregate effort is higher using the conventional (reverse) lottery contest when there are more (less) prizes than bads.

Various fields of discourse, including legal discourse, make use of a variety of discursive, textual genres that can become objects of analysis at the interface between Language and Law. Within these legal genres, in this thesis, our general objective is to investigate the Defense Statement, regarding Commitment. Our specific objectives are to identify, describe, analyze and interpret, the steps, ?Preliminaries? and ?Merits?, which refer to the procedural and material part of the argument of the Defense, observing: i) the composition and sequential structure; ii) the points of view held by the first speaker-enunciator (S1/E1) and second speakers (s2); iii) the linguistic marks that point to assuming Commitment and/or a mediating role. The study of this genre is relevant, as it is an essential genre in civil lawsuits, and presents distinct characteristics advising on legislative mandates, and practical requirements as well. We opt to analyze these steps because they form the nucleus of the narration and exposition of the arguments, the use of the previously mentioned discourse, and therefore, the contain other voices (plaintiffs, legal authors, legislators, jurists), enabling, thus, the study of the textual marks that evidence Commitment. The research is characterized as qualitative, bibliographic, interpretive research. The corpus is comprised of 8 (eight) Defense Statements, produced by different lawyers, which were protocoled at the 2nd Special Civil Court of the South Side in the District of Natal-RN, from 2013 to 2014. The Defenses analyzed relate to consumer rights. The theoretical framework of our study is based on the Textual Discourse Analysis (TDA), developed by Adam (2011), who analyzes the (con)textual production of meaning, through the analysis of authentic texts. This perspective is based on Textual Linguistics (TL) and Enunciative Linguistics (EL). Our perspective on Point of View (POV), is based on the studies of Rabatel (2008, 2008a, 2009, 2015, 2015a), and the framework for mediation is based on Guentch?va (1994, 1996, 2011, 2014), which forms our basic notions for examining Commitment. Regarding the legal discourse, we focus on studies by Rodrigues, Passeggi and Silva Neto (2014), Rodrigues (2016b, 2016c), Rodrigues e Passeggi (2016), Louren?o (2008, 2015), Pinto (2010), Gomes (2014), Tullio (2012), Palaia (2010), Cabral (2016), among others. We selected two categories of analysis that, according to Adam (2011), characterize the degree of the ER of the propositional enunciations, materially in the text: modalities, which are determinants of the speakers, the enunciators and the points of view. Similarly, the indication of mediator profiles, through the linguistic marks that point to not assuming Commitment. The research data analysis shows that in the Defense Statement, as a discursive textual genre, the argument sequence predominates, since, besides being a prototypical mark of legal discourse, the producer of the text, on assuming ER and using the POV of other enunciators, influences and establishes the direction of the argument in the text. Regarding the mediating profile, we observe that the use of legal sources functions as a strategy of what is said by the speaker-enunciator (S1/E1) to assign the disengagement in relation to the propositional content of his or her speech. In this sense, the Defense presents two distinct points of view (perpetrator and defendant), exposing the adherence of the defendant to a point of view that is in opposition to the perpetrator. This occurs, mainly, in the sections ?Preliminaries? and ?Merits?, textual zones that point to, on the one hand, enunciators as responsible for the propositional content enunciated, and on the other hand, enunciators that do not engage with respect to the propositional content enunciated.

Full textThe majority of this work focuses on the theoretical analysis of collective action, group efficiency, and incentive mechanisms in team contests where individual outlays of heterogeneous agents are not observable. The reward allocation within the group is instead dependent on observable worker characteristics, modeled as individual abilities, as well as on the observable level of aggregate output. I study the incentives for free-riding and the group-size paradox under a very general set of intra-team allocation rules. I further derive the optimal allocation mechanism which rewards agents according to a general-logit specification based on their relative ability. I derive conditions under which a team's performance is most sensitive to the ability of its highest-skill members, while at the same time higher spread in the distribution of ability has a positive effect on group output. In the final chapter I shift attention to the problem of optimal player order choice in dynamic pairwise team battles. I show that even if player order choice is conducted endogenously and sequentially after observing the outcomes of earlier rounds, then complete randomization over remaining agents is always a subgame perfect equilibrium. The zero-sum nature of these type of contests implies that expected payoffs for each team are independent of whether the contest matching pairs are determined endogenously and sequentially or announced before the start of the game. In both cases the ex-ante payoffs are equivalent to those when an independent contest organizer randomly draws the matches

This thesis consists of three chapters broadly in industrial organization, with a focus on contests and auctions, and game theory. Chapter 1 develops a new model of multistage R&D procurement contests, in which firms conduct research over a number of stages to develop an innovative product and then supply it to a procurer. I show that the primitives of this model-the cost of research, the distributions of project values and delivery costs, and the share of the profits captured by the firms-are non parametrically identified given data on R&D expenditures and procurement contract amounts. I then develop a tractable estimation procedure and apply it to data from the Small Business Innovation Research program in the Department of Defense. I find that within a particular contests, there is low variation in the values of the proposed projects, which are drawn early in the process, but considerably larger variation in the delivery costs, which are drawn later. The DOD provides high-powered incentives, sharing about 75% of the surplus with the firms. I then suggest simple design changes to improve social surplus but find that many of these socially beneficial design changes would in fact reduce DOD profits. Chapter 2, which is joint with James Roberts and Andrew Sweeting, studies the benefits of regulating entry into procurement auctions, relative to standard auctions in which bidders are allowed to enter and bid freely. Specifically, we study the relationship between auction outcomes and the precision of information bidders have about their costs before entering the bidding stage of the contest. We show that the relative performance of a standard auction with free entry and an "entry rights auction," which restricts participation in the bidding phase, depends non monotonically on the information precision. We finally estimate the model on a dataset of auctions for bridge-building contracts let by the Oklahoma and Texas Departments of Transportation. Entry is estimated to be moderately selective, and the counterfactual implication is that an entry rights auction would significantly increase social efficiency and reduce procurement costs. Chapter 3, which is joint with Lucas Manuelli and Ludwig Straub, proposes a model of "signal distortion" in a game with imperfect public monitoring. We construct a framework in which each player has the chance to distort the true public signal, and each player is uncertain about the distortion technologies available to his opponent. Continuation payoffs are dependent on the distorted signal. Our main result is that when players evaluate strategies according to their worst case guarantees-i.e., are ambiguity-averse over certain distributions in the environment-players behave as if the continuation payoffs that incentivize them in the stage game are perfectly aligned with their opponents'. We then provide two examples showing counterintuitive implications of this result: (i) signal structures that allow players to identify deviators can be harmful in enforcing a strategy profile, and (ii) the presence of signal distortion can help sustain cooperation when it is impossible in standard settings. We then extend our equilibrium concept to a repeated game, show that it is a natural generalization of strongly symmetric equilibria, and then prove an anti-folk theorem that payoffs are in general bounded away from efficiency.
