Abstract Research on the role of sexual selection in the speciation process largely focuses on the diversifying role of mate choice. In particular, much attention has been drawn to the fact that population divergence in mate choice and in the male traits subject to choice directly can lead to assortative mating. However, male contest competition over mates also constitutes an important mechanism of sexual selection. We review recent empirical studies and argue that sexual selection through male contest competition can affect speciation in ways other than mate choice. For example, biases in agg

One of the firms is presented with an opportunity to commit to some output before the demand becomes known, but may add to it afterwards, then moving simultaneously with the rivals. I show that the more cost-efficient firm is more likely to behave like a Stackelberg leader, i.e. to produce the optimal Stackelberg leader quantity ex-ante and refrain from adding to it later, letting the rivals respond to its ex-ante output in the manner o

We study a competition among two contests, where each contest designer aims to attract as much effort as possible. Such a competition exists in reality, e.g., in crowd-sourcing websites. Our results are phrased in terms of the ``relative prize power'' of a contest, which is the ratio of the total prize offered by this contest designer relative to the sum of total prizes of the two contests. When contestants have a quasi-linear utility function that captures both a risk-aversion effect and a cost of effort, we show that a simple contest attracts a total effort which approaches the relative priz

Abstract In this study, we focus on crowdsourcing contests for engineering design problems where contestants search for design alternatives. Our stakeholder is a designer of such a contest who requires support to make decisions, such as whether to share opponent-specific information with the contestants. There is a significant gap in our understanding of how sharing opponent-specific information influences a contestant’s information acquisition decision such as whether to stop searching for design alternatives. Such decisions in turn affect the outcomes of a design contest. To address this gap

This competition brings with it rising strategic uncertainties which endanger stability and have far reaching implications for WMD-related agreements.
