Abstract:
The study examines possible underlying mechanisms that may be responsible for generally observed biased response patterns in two conditional reasoning tasks: the Wason selection task and the conditional inference evaluation task. It is proposed that memory processes that may account for priming phenomenon, may also account for the phenomena of matching bias and double-negation effects in reasoning. A new mental activation model is proposed, based on distributed theories of memory, which models relevance effects of the problem materials by way of a simple algorithm. The model is seen to parsimo

Behavioral research has long documented that the choices an individual makes do not always follow the maximization of expected values. To describe the utility an individual maximizes through his or her choices, one class of models - static models - has been previously developed. These models are reviewed in Chapter 1. To assess the static models, a non-parametric method to reveal the utility of alternatives is developed in Chapter 2. The results show that the utility predicted from the static models deviates from the estimated utility. Utility, however, is relatively unstable across contexts d

There is tremendous variation in how people orient toward their goal pursuits and these differences have traditionally been treated as stable traits. However, research in the related field of goal pursuit has demonstrated that the physical or merely symbolic presence of relationship partners can greatly influence which goals people are interested in pursuing. My coauthors and I tested and ultimately found support for the hypothesis that the social context would be similarly active in shaping how people approach their goals, that is, in shaping their motivational orientations. Abstract:
Visual search requires participants to search for a pre-specified target amongst a number of distractors. According to theories of visual search, attention is directed towards the target through a combination of stimulus-driven (bottom-up) and goal-driven (top-down) means. For example, when searching for a red car, top-down attention can prepare the visual system to prioritise items with matching visual properties to the target, e.g., red objects. Theories of visual search support guidance according to visual properties, including the Guided Search model (Wolfe, 1994) and Attentional Engagemen

Many models of memory retrieval assume that events in a sequential context are incorporated in planned representations during sequence production. Serial ordering errors, in which correct events are produced in incorrect sequence positions, offer evidence for the simultaneous accessibility of sequential elements. Musical sequences pose a challenge to contextual models of planning; contextual relationships among events in music may enhance sequence planning and retrieval, contrary to traditional effects of list length on forgetting.
