Abstract:
For actions on arbitrary inclusions of factors with finite index, we define an algebraic property called "strong freeness". In the case of strongly amenable subfactors of type II∞ or IIIλ (0 < λ < 1), this property is shown to be a characterization of centrally free actions. We then classify strongly free actions of discrete amenable groups on strongly amenable subfactors of type II∞, and strongly free actions of a class of discrete amenable groups (which include ℤn, n ∈ ℕ) on strongly amenable subfactors of type IIIλ. Namely, we show that the (generalized) fundamental homomorphism is a

The notion of automaticity has been widely studied in groups and some progress has been made in understanding this notion in the wider context of semigroups. The purpose of this paper is to study the connections between the automaticity of semigroups S and T where T is a subsemigroup of finite Rees index in S.

AbstractA topological index is actually designed by transforming a chemical structure into a number. Topological index is a graph invariant which characterizes the topology of the graph and remains invariant under graph automorphism. Eccentricity based topological indices are of great importance and play a vital role in chemical graph theory. In this article, we consider a graph (non-zero component graph) associated to a finite dimensional vector space over a finite filed in the context of the following eleven eccentricity based topological indices: total eccentricity index; average eccentrici

This paper considers extended finite automata over monoids, in the sense of Dassow and Mitrana. We show that the family of languages accepted by extended finite automata over a monoid K is controlled by the word problem of K in a precisely stated manner. We also point out a critical error in the proof of the main result in the paper by Dassow and Mitrana. However as one consequence of our approach, by analyzing a certain word problem, we obtain a complete proof of this result, namely that the family of languages accepted by extended finite automata over the free group of rank two is exactly th

We determine all finite p-groups that admit a faithful, self-similar action on the p-ary rooted tree such that the first level stabilizer is abelian. A group is in this class if and only if it is a split extension of an elementary abelian p-group by a cyclic group of order p. The proof is based on use of virtual endomorphisms. In this context the result says that if G is a finite p-group with abelian subgroup H of index p, then there exists a virtual endomorphism of G with trivial core and domain H if and only if G is a split extension of H and H is an elementary abelian p-group.

This paper studies higher index theory for a random sequence of bounded degree, finite graphs with diameter tending to infinity. We show that in a natural model for such random sequences the following hold almost surely: the coarse Baum–Connes assembly map is injective; the coarse Baum–Connes assembly map is not surjective; the maximal coarse Baum–Connes assembly map is an isomorphism. These results are closely tied to issues of expansion in graphs: in particular, we also show that such random sequences almost surely do not have geometric property (T), a strong form of expansion. The key geomet

Abstract. Within a theoretical model context, the sensitivity and instability of the grassland ecosystem to finite-amplitude perturbations are studied. A new approach of conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations (CNOPs) is adopted to investigate this nonlinear problem. It is shown that the linearly stable grassland (desert) states can be nonlinearly unstable with finite-amplitude initial perturbations, which represent the human activities and natural factors on the ecosystem. When the moisture index is between the two bifurcation points, a large enough finite amplitude perturbation can induc

The invariants of finite-dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras, such as even-degree indices and anomaly numbers, are considered in the context of the non-crystallographic finite reflection groups H2, H3 and H4. Using a representation-orbit replacement, the definitions and properties of the indices are formulated for individual orbits of the examined groups. The indices of orders two and four of the tensor product of k orbits are determined. It is currently unknown whether or not there exist (synchronously) combable groups which are not automatic. This note settles an analogous question in a simpler context. The notion of a broomlike combing is introduced. It is shown that if a group admits a broomlike combing then it admits a broomlike combing in which the language of combing words is regular. A finitely generated group admits a broomlike combing if and only if it contains a free subgroup of finite index.
