Abstract:
Euphemistic substitution occurs due to taboo issues and the most common taboo subjects are physiological actions or their results (motion, sexual intercourse etc) thus the basic function of euphemistic substitution is to soften an offensive, vulgar word. A euphemism is usually defined as a softer, a more neutral substitute for vulgar words, however, such a definition is narrow and not precise as it only indicates one feature of euphemism formation, i.e. correctness, tact. Ascribing euphemisms only to the field of tropes does not reflect their contemporary distribution. Now euphemisms are also

This paper aims to investigate the role of intratextuality and contextuality in the mechanisms of understanding euphemism in the Qur’an, which in some cases would provide evidence for the intended meaning or a way of interpreting and translating euphemisms. It hypothesises that the dependence only on dictionary, exegesis or single text may yield misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the euphemistic meaning. The paper develops a linguistic model for critical evaluation of the translation of Qur’anic euphemisms based on the textual level, which goes beyond word or sentence levels. Methodologi

The changes taking place in modern society are naturally reflected in the language. The place of euphemistic substitu-tions has always played an important role in communication: "unpleasant" and "uncomfortable" designations of pro-cesses, objects or phenomena are replaced by more appropriate ones in each specific speech situation. Euphemisms are constantly used in politicians' speeches, analysts' speeches and descriptions of economic processes, announcing mili-tary actions or presenting innovative implementations.
