Abstract:
Claude III Audran, Arbiter of the French Arabesque is the first substantial biographical study of Claude III Audran, a late 17th- and early 18th-century master of ornament and a proponent of cutting-edge design who took inspiration from contemporary sources. This work investigates Audran’s accomplishments and the factors that impacted the longevity and arc of his successful career, taking into consideration the contextual variables that influenced and shaped his work. Abstract:
Recent research indicates that people from multiracial backgrounds may have more malleable racial identification than those with monoracial backgrounds. For multiracial individuals, context may play an important role in racial self-identification. An Asian/White biracial person, for example, might identify more as Asian when around other Asian people or when speaking an Asian language. Also, over one’s lifetime, multiracial people are more likely to change their racial identification than keep it constant. But how do these fluctuations in racial self-definition affect psychological well-being?

This chapter considers if and how social and political trust are affected by policy outputs and outcomes related to the welfare state. We survey how (dis)similar explanatory variables, causal mechanisms, and methodology are across four accumulations of studies. Specifically, we discuss contextual factors in “normal times” as well as effects of economic crises. We also assess individual-level factors focusing on “performance evaluations” and “personal experiences” of welfare state aspects and institutions. Overall, we find evidence for relationships between welfare state related variables and b

After the individual case studies presented in the previous chapters, the book now investigates whether the results of the individual case analyses can be generalized, which depends on whether they can also be confirmed against the background of a larger sample. A multilevel analysis involving a total of fifty-four countries was therefore carried out. Church attendance and belief in God, as well as indexes of individual and church religiosity, were used as dependent variables. The guiding set of questions developed in Chapter 3 was operationalized in the selection of the independent variables:

Cross-cultural interactions do not happen in a vacuum; they happen within an organizational context, with specific actors involved and in a particular physical setting. This chapter draws on a perspective of situated cognition to examine how various layers of context can influence cognitions and behaviours in cross-cultural situations. It proposes that action results from the interaction of cognitive schemas, including cultural values and assumptions, and contextual variables. Context is conceptualized as a multilayered construct including institutional, organizational and situational layers w

This chapter discusses a conceptual framework that clarifies the nature and importance of context in social scientific research. It first explains how context fits into survey analysis, then addresses major problems that hamper use and collection of contextual data: vague or incomplete conceptual definitions of “context” and lack of methodological guidance to collect and analyze contextual data. It suggests that systematic research and cumulative knowledge on contextual effects are constrained by two factors: the lack of standardized contextual variables across surveys and sporadic empirical i

This innovative and distinctive book takes a long chronological view and a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary approach. It is the definitive work on the posthumous reputation of the ever-popular warrior queen of the Iceni, Queen Boadicea/Boudica. It explores her presence in British historical discourse, from the early modern rediscovery of the works of Tacitus to the first historical films of the early twentieth century. In doing so, the book seeks to demonstrate the continuity and persistence of historical ideas across time and throughout a variety of media. This focus on continuity leads into a

Another approach is the detailed analysis of individual speakers in different social situations. This chapter presents an overview of these two research traditions. There is much discussion about using subjective well-being measures as inputs into a social welfare function, which will tell us how well societies are doing. But we have (many) more than one measure of subjective well-being. This chapter considers examples of three of the main types (life satisfaction, affect, and eudaimonia) in three European surveys. These are quite strongly correlated with each other, and are correlated with explanatory variables in pretty much the same manner. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data consistently indicate that mathematical difficulties are more prevalent in older than in younger children (e.g. Department of Education, 2011). Children’s trajectories can take a variety of shapes such as linear, flat, curvilinear, and uneven, and shape has been found to vary within children and across tasks (J Jordan, Mulhern, and Wylie, 2009). There has been an increase in the use of statistical methods which are specifically designed to study development, and this has greatly improved our understanding of children’s mathematical development.
