Abstract:
The purposes of this study were (a) to evaluate differences in basketball game-related statistics among continental championships for under-18 (U18) women, and (b) to identify game-related statistics that discriminate among the continents. The analysis was performed on all matches (n = 136) in the four continental championships (Africa, America, Asia, Europe) of 2016. Differences in game-related statistics among the continents were analyzed by an analysis of variance (ANOVA) with effect size statistics. Game-related statistics that discriminate among the continents were assessed by discriminant analysis. The ANOVA yielded significant F-values for 13 of 16 variables and large effect size differences for 10 of 16 variables. The discriminant analysis yielded three significant functions. The Asian championship was discriminated from the other continental championships by ball possessions, defensive rebounds, assists, and fouls. The African championship was discriminated from the European championship by ball possessions, successful 3-point field goals, unsuccessful free throws, and turnovers, and from the American championship by ball possessions, unsuccessful 2-point field goals, successful 3-point field goals, successful free throws, and assists. The results of this study suggest that U18 women’s basketball games are played differently in each continent.

Abstract:
In March of 2017, best-selling Nigerian author and feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in an interview with Britain’s Channel 4, was asked whether being a trans woman makes one any less of a ‘real woman?’ In the clip, which went viral shortly thereafter, Adichie responded by saying ‘When people talk about, “Are trans women women?” my feeling is trans women are trans women.’ Echoing the essentialist, predominantly white Global Northern, feminist politics of trans-exclusionary feminists (TERFs), by implying that trans women are not ‘real’ women because, as she assumes, they benefited from male privilege, Adichie set off a social media maelstrom. The publicised responses to her comments largely came from feminists and trans women in the Global North, and though many trans people from the African continent responded, with hashtags such as #ChimamandaKilledME, very few of these received any attention. As the hashtag suggests, for trans people living on the African continent, given the general lack of recourse to rights, Adichie’s words as an African writer carry considerable weight. Given this, the absence of media attention is curious. This article offers a recentring, by focusing on those voices, maligned in the broader debate – trans people from the African continent. I argue that while Adichie might be stumbling over the questions that lie at the heart of TERF politics (what does it mean to be a woman? and does it matter how a person arrives at being a woman?), trans women on the African continent have been busy reconstituting the terms of the terrain.

Abstract:
Objectives: To assess factors influencing short-term outcomes of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repairs in community-dwelling women of Liberia, Africa. Methods: Forty patients who underwent VVF repairs were analyzed. Primary outcome was continence status at 14 days post repair. Factors influencing continence status were characterized. Results: The mean duration of leakage was 9.6 ±8.3 years, (3 months–28 years). Thirteen (33%) had previous repairs, and 6 (15%) had multiple fistula sites. Twenty-eight (70%) were continent at catheter removal. First time repairs had a higher continence rate compared to women with previous repairs, 78% and 54% respectively ( p = 0.15). Seven (47%) juxtaurethral repairs were considered failures, while only one (9%) juxtacervical fistula remained incontinent ( p =0.069). Controlling for duration of leakage, women with previous repairs were significantly less likely to be continent ( p = 0.04; adjusted OR = 0.07; 95% CI: 0.005, 0.83). Conclusions: Patients with previous VVF repairs and juxtaurethral fistulae experience lower success rates; surgery remains an effective treatment for many VVF patients.

Abstract:
Objective: To identify the knowledge about physiotherapy as a treatment of urinary incontinence in continent women. Methods: The study was characterized by a cross-sectional and quantitative study. A ten items questionnaire, created by the researchers, was used with related questions about women's health. The sample consisted of 60 continents women, aged between 20-90 years, divided into age groups, accommodating ten participants in each age delimitation as follows: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-90. Results: The results showed that 65% of the women did not know about the physiotherapeutic treatment for UI, 28.33% had heard and 6.67% knew about it. The channels of knowledge selected by the volunteers who claimed to know or hear about physiotherapy in the UI were 18.18% media, 31.82% were people known, 45.45% were health professionals, and 4.55% were other unna/med forms. It was also found that women aged between 60 and 90 years have more knowledge on the subject (15%) than those aged 20 to 39 (5%) and 40 to 59 years (0%). Conclusion: It is concluded, therefore, that continents women need more information regarding physical therapy treatment for urinary incontinence. In addition, this awareness should occur in a multidisciplinary way to cover a greater number of women and information providers, in view of the search for treatment early avoid greater complications.

Abstract:
BackgroundIodine is the key element for thyroid hormone synthesis, and its deficiency, even moderate, is harmful in pregnancy, when needs are increased, because of its potential deleterious effects on fetal brain development. In Portugal, no recent data on iodine intake exists. The objective of this countrywide study was to analyze iodine status in pregnant Portuguese women in order to propose adequate measures to the health authorities.Subjects and methodsUsing a fast colorimetric method, urine iodine concentration (UIC) was evaluated in 3631 pregnant women followed in 17 maternity hospitals from hinterland and coastal areas in Continental Portugal and the Portuguese islands of Açores and Madeira.ResultsMedian UIC value was 84.9 μg/l (range 67.6–124.1) in Continental Portugal, 69.5 μg/l in Madeira, and 50.0 μg/l in Açores. The percentage of satisfactory values (>150 μg/l) was 16.8, ranging from 8.8 to 34.1 in the Continent, and being 8.2 in Madeira and 2.3 in Açores. The percentage of values below 50 μg/l was 23.7, ranging from 14.0 to 37.4 in the Continent, 33.7 in Madeira, and 50.0 in Açores.ConclusionsOur results point to an inadequate iodine intake in pregnant women assisted in most Portuguese maternity hospitals. Considering the potential deleterious effects of inadequate iodine supply in pregnancy, iodine supplementation is strongly recommended in this period of life.

Abstract:

This thesis is an analysis of how international policies on HIV prevention can be understood through a postcolonial perspective and how these prevention strategies are reflected nationally and locally in Babati, Tanzania. To gain knowledge of these aims I have focused on UNAIDS and the US’ government policies to get an idea of where the international discourse about HIV prevention stands. My empirical data in Babati is collected by semi-structural interviews with people who work with HIV prevention. I have used Chandra Talpade Mohanty’s understanding of Third World women, together with Jenny Kitzinger theory about women in HIV discourses and Karen M Booth’s view of how international policies are trying to empower women to reduce their risk of HIV infection. To assist my analysis I have focused on three notions, which are recurring in the HIV prevention discourse, these are: empowerment of women, condom use and sexual behaviour. These notions help to establish the HIV discourse and later I have compared the results with my theoretical framework and empirical findings. My final conclusion is that international policies on HIV prevention can be seen as imperialistic as they are promoting a certain change in sexual behaviour, such as reduction of partners and abstinence until marriage.

Abstract:
The Partition of India (1947) and the Bangladesh Liberation War (1971) are two transitory moments which reveal the violence of post-colonial nation-building. The acts performed upon an ethno-religious basis have given rise to many private stories, themselves stifled by self-legitimating national master narratives. These stories particularly highlight the instrumentalisation of the idea and the bodies of women in carrying out communal conflict. Three generations of women novelists have sought to break the silence imposed by patriarchal State apparatuses and religious radicalism. They turn to the impetuousness of the literary genre of the novel in order to thwart Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi master narratives. As such they write back to the violent fracture of History, through a poetics of the fragment, and together draw an obscene, monstrous and carnival-like portrait of contemporary Nation-States. Such novels, whether sub-continental or diasporic, resist all forms of borders (whether ideological, literary, commercial, etc.), driven instead by their commitment to contradiction. The fragmentation which defines them is all at once linguistic, literary, sociological and political. Our study comprises novels written (chronologically) by Jyotirmoyee Devi, Anis Kidwai, Mumtaz Shah Nawaz, Attia Hosain, Amrita Pritam, Sophia Mustafa, Bapsi Sidhwa, Anita Rau Badami , Shauna Singh Baldwin Meena Arora Nayak, Sorayya Khan, Kamila Shamsie and Tahmima Anam

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents and characterises the way in which, in the twenty-first century, after years of feminist struggles inside and outside of institutions, gender relations are organised in the different countries of the INCASI project (on the European side, Spain, Italy, Finland, France and the United Kingdom, on the side of the South American Southern Cone, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay). It pays special attention to the implementation of feminist issues on political agendas, and in particular the assignment of women to unpaid care work—an aspect of the power continuum that we look to relate to other aspects. Gradually and for almost a century all countries in both continents have granted women the status of subjects, citizens and employees. However, the conditions, challenges and timelines of this process differ considerably from one continent to another, so they need to be addressed separately. The neoliberal era did not have the same impact in Europe as it did in South America (nor was it exactly the same between particular European countries or among South American ones).

Abstract:
Abstract Peacebuilding is less likely to succeed without the participation and consideration of women. In the last two decades, peace operations deployed on the African continent under the banner of the United Nations and the African Union have included mandates focused on strengthening women’s participation in peace processes, ensuring the protection of women and girls, and integrating gender considerations into the approach of missions at building sustainable peace. This chapter examines the approaches undertaken in two case study countries—Liberia (where a long-standing UN peace operation has recently departed) and South Sudan (where a UN peace operation continues to operate with significant constraints)—in order to examine some of the challenges and opportunities that UN engagement has offered in terms of advancing equality and women’s security in each country.

Abstract:
Urinary incontinence (UI), defined by the International Continence Society as “the complaint of any involuntary leakage of urine” [1], is believed to affect at least 13 million people in the United States. Around 80% of people affected are women [2,3]. The most common type of UI in women is stress urinary incontinence (SUI) [4]. Although not identified as life-threatening, UI may lead to withdrawal from social situations and reduced life quality.

Abstract:
Regarding the negative trends in the birth rate, South Central Bulgaria is no exception. The decrease in the birth rate in this part of the country, especially in the period 2011-2020, is a result of the economic crisis and its impact on the living standards of the population. In recent years, the value orientations of the population have changed a lot. Women of all ethnic and religious groups in the region demonstrate a new type of reproductive behavior. The age structure has deteriorated and the fertile contingents have significantly decreased. Each municipality has already adopted the model of simple reproduction of the population. In South Central Bulgaria, favorable conditions for stable demographic development no longer exist.

Abstract:
This paper describes an undergraduate program at the USAF Academy that uses the threads of engine design and research to teach and reinforce the fundamentals of gas turbine engines. Each year approximately twelve cadets who have chosen to specialize in the propulsion track of the Aeronautical Engineering major enter a five-course sequence that includes 1.) engineering thermodynamics, 2.) intro to propulsion (advanced cycle analysis), 3.) advanced propulsion (focus on engine component performance), 4.) intro to aircraft and propulsion system design, and 5.) aircraft engine design. During the fifth course, the cadets perform a preliminary engine design to meet various specified performance requirements unique to that semester. The cadets must select the engine cycle, size the engine considering installation effects, design the major components, select the materials, and consider safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost issues. The cadets then make an oral and written design presentation to a group from government and industry. In addition to the course work and the detailed design project, the cadets take a course in experimental methodology that is centered around an actual ongoing research project. The cadets are teamed up with experienced faculty researchers who lead them through each step in the research process. Examples of past research projects include: boundary layer separation on linear cascade blades, enhanced heat transfer in internal blade passages, and high-cycle fatigue forcing functions. Facilities that are available for cadet propulsion research include: a linear cascade wind tunnel, a Garrett F109 turbofan engine, a Continental J69 turbojet engine, and an Allison T63 turboshaft engine. Cadets are also encouraged to participate in a six-week research experience at one of several government, industry, or university laboratories. Finally, cadets can continue their participation with an independent study project. The design and research threads that are woven through the course work equip the cadets for success in graduate school or for making immediate contributions in the USAF propulsion community.

Abstract:
The urban population of Africa, the fastest urbanizing continent, has increased from 19% to 39% in the past 50 years, and the number of urban dwellers is projected to reach 770 million by 2030. However, while rapid urbanization has increased mobility and created a subsequent growth in demand for public transport in cities, this has not been met by the provision of adequate and sustainable infrastructure and services. The majority of low-income residents and the urban poor still lack access to adequate transport services and rely on non-motorized and public transport, which is often informal and characterized by poor service delivery. Lack of access to transport services limits access to opportunities that aren’t in the proximity of residential areas, such as education, healthcare, and employment. The urban public transport sector not only faces the challenge of poor service provision, but also of gender inequality. Research shows that, in the existing urban transport systems, there are significant differences in the travel patterns of and modes of transport used by women and men, and that these differences are associated with their roles and responsibilities in society. Moreover, the differences in travel patterns are characterized by unequal access to transport facilities and services. Women are generally underrepresented in the sector, in both its operation and decision-making. Women’s mobility needs and patterns are rarely integrated into transport infrastructure design and services and female users are often victims of harassment and assault. As cities rapidly expand, meeting the transport needs of their growing populations while paying attention to gender-differentiated mobility patterns is a prerequisite to achieving sustainability, livability and inclusivity. Gender mainstreaming in urban public transport is therefore a critical issue, but one which is under-researched in East Africa. This research explores gender issues in public transport in East Africa, focusing in particular on women’s inclusion in both public transport systems and transport policy decision-making processes and using case studies from three cities: Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam.
