Abstract:
The rise of the Trump regime has sparked xenophobic sentiments directed toward and heightened fears experienced by mixed-status immigrant families living in the United States. Using the Southern Poverty Law Center’s concept of “The Trump Effect”—how the election of Donald Trump has had a damaging impact on undocumented immigrants—the researchers reveal how the lives of 12 mixed-status families (16 youth and 16 of their parents/guardians) have been transformed. Implications of this investigation are significant given the current social and political landscapes and continual fear mixed-status families undergo in their plight for daily survival.

Abstract:
SummaryThis paper briefly reviews how the ICD-11 and DSM-5 are going to handle the various continua existing in the area of mood disorders. The two systems will address the continua between “normal” elation and hypomania, between unipolar depression and bipolar disorder, and between anxiety disorders and depression in a more consistent way than in the past, while there will be differences in the characterization of mixed states and schizoaffective disorders. A major weakness of both systems will be the fact that the boundary between “normal” sadness and depression will not be based on a solid empirical evidence.

<p>Within experimental range on arena of the river Dnepr in natural reserve "Dneprovsko-Orelsky" in 241 points electric conductivity of soil has been measured by two ways: in a condition of natural humidity and in a condition of a full moisture capacity. It is established that on the average electrical conductivity makes 0.068±0.002 and 0.267±0.014 dSm/m accordingly. As a result of the carried out research by us the established procedure which allows to transform point objects which contain the information on electric conductivity of soil in continual (raster) layer on the basis of established regression dependences of an investigated indicator from predictors which are received on the basis of data of remote sensing of a surface of the Earth. Canonical axes received as a result of the mixed correspondence analysis have been used as regression predictors. Continual data (digital elevation model and its derivative, vegetative and other Landsat indexes, relief and vegetative cover diversity indexes) and discrete data (results of Earth surface classification on elementary relief units and types of a vegetative cover) have been calculated by mixed correspondence analysis. The important result is dependence of electric conductivity of soil on indicators of a relief and a vegetative cover diversity.</p>

Abstract:
In 1997, long-term thinning experiment Všeteč in Southern Bohemia was established in the young 19-year-old mixed beech and spruce stand. Three variants (0.10 ha each) were investigated: 1 – control unthinned plot (only salvage cut was done), 2 – plot with positive selection from above and 3 – plot with negative selection from below. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the first results from the eleven-year investigation (at the age of 19–29 years) focused on the effect of thinning on growth, species composition, litter-fall and humus in young mixed stands in this experiment. Thinning (both variants) resulted in decreased salvage cut (dead, broken and uprooted trees). Continual diminishing of spruce portion (started quickly after dry season in 2003 on control unthinned plot) was slow or soft on both thinned plots. Annual litter-fall in experimental young spruce and beech mixed stands at the age of 27–29 years varied from 4.6 to 5.5 thousand kg/ha and dry biomass of humus horizons L, F and H represented altogether approximately 91 and 128 thousand kg/ha on plots 3 and 1, respectively (plot 2 was omitted from this part of investigation).

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to develop an efficient process of lactic acid production by Lactobacillus casei subsp. rhamnosus on date juice In a first part, the batch cultures were realized to carry out the nutritional requirement of the strain. These studies allowed us to describe the effects of carbon substrates, nitrogen substrates and vitamins on the lactic acid production. We showed that ammonium sulphate is a satisfying economic alternative and we have determined feasibility of minimizing the addition of the yeast extract by the partial use of yeast extract combined with the ammonium sulphate plus the addition of vitamins of the group B. Pure and mixed cultures of Lactobacillus casei and Lactococcus lactis were carried out. The mixed system gives better results concerning the lactic acid production and the use of the sugars compared with those obtained in pure cultures of Lactobacillus casei or Lactococcus lactis. The effect of pure sugars (glucose and fructose) and mixed sugars (glucose/fructose) on the lactic acid production was studied. The lactic acid production is more important on mixed sugars than on pure sugars what explains the performances of fermentation on date juice. In a second part, a mode of fed batch operations was defined to improve the performances of the fermentation. The two factors influencing the process are the feeding rate and the concentration of the feeding medium. In a third part, kinetic study in continuous culture was developed. We studied the influence of dilution rate on growth, substrate utilization and lactic acid production. The productivity of the continuous process was considerably increased in comparison with the batch process. Finally, a tentative model has been established for the fermentation process. The corresponding model, although not perfect, is apparently able to simulate growth rate, substrates uptake and lactic acid production in batch culture

Abstract:
During this Phd work, on the hydrodynamics of flow in a continuous reactor, where the properties of the elaborated nanomaterials depend on the morphological and structural characteristics of the colloidal solution out coming from the reactor, we first optimized the conditions of use of the latter (Re ≈ 6000), as well as the geometry of the T-mixer in order to improve the quality of the micro-mixing. Then, experimental measurements allowed us to verify that the condition of Damköhler is respected (Da ≤ 1). Finally, this result has been validated numerically. Beyond this Re critical value (Re * ≈ 8000), we have highlighted the phenomenon of cavitations in the T-mixer. This phenomenon has been studied experimentally, by SLS measurements, and numerically by CFD simulation. The results obtained by these two approaches are in agreement. Finally, DLS measurements were made to study and characterize cavitations bubbles. These measurements allowed us to evaluate the size of the bubbles as well as their trajectory along the Z axis 121 at the outlet of the T-mixer. This study was followed by numerical simulations of the cavitations and the multiphase model in our flow. Both experimental and numerical studies confirmed that the decrease in the intensity of scattered light measured by SLS along the Z axis is result to the changes of the number and the size of bubbles

Abstract:
Despite conditions that would work against a small rural school in an impoverish area of rural Kentucky, Fairway Elementary School has managed to excel in its accountability measures. This study used a mixed-methods approach with data collected through interviews and MAP student growth scores in reading and mathematics. Five themes emerged from the qualitative data regarding school success: (1) a well-organized intervention system, (2) a focus on and overall enjoyment of the discipline of mathematics, (3) involvement of parents in school functions, (4) transparency of needs and organization of resources, and (5) an overall school culture that is competitive, impactful, and student-centered. Quantitative data revealed large improvements in student growth in reading and mathematics after the adoption of standard-aligned curricular programs in both subjects. Fairway Elementary continues to succeed in their efforts to improve not only student achievement, but the culture of their school within an impoverished community.

Abstract:
The aim of the present work is to propose a continuous alternative to batch processes classically used to carry out encapsulation by interfacial polycondensation that represent high investment and working costs. Encapsulation by interfacial polycondensation consists in an emulsification step followed by a reactive step. We propose here a process decoupling these two steps using technologies well adapted to hydrodynamic issues of each step. This study is realised on the basis of model system. The emulsification step is carried out in static mixers under turbulent flow. Pressure drop measurements in single-phase flow enable to highlight this flow regime and to establish correlations representing these pressure drops in terms of dimensionless numbers: the Reynolds number and the friction factor. About emulsification we evaluate the influence of different parameters on the operation performances in terms of mean droplets size as a function of energy cost. We compare the performances of three different Sulzer static mixers and correlate results obtained in terms of Sauter mean diameter as a function of Reynolds and Weber numbers. The reactive step has been first carried out is stirred tank in order to study the reaction kinetics and to acquire reaction times necessary to design continuous reactors. Finally this step has been realised using two continuous reactors: the Deanhex reactor (Anxionnaz et al., 2009) and a coiled tube reactor. This last study consists first in validating the continuous process through the conservation of the emulsion size distribution during encapsulation and the conservation of the apparent kinetics. Finally the favourable hydrodynamic conditions presented by continuous reactors offer new ways of intensification to the process. In fact it is possible to increase the microcapsule concentration in the reactor and to work without surfactant to stabilize the emulsion. This continuous process for microcapsules production offers improvements in terms of product quality and working costs compared to traditional batch process used in the industry

Abstract:
The implementation of a continuous mixer in the industry requires detailed studies for a better understanding of this process, with essential aim the development of a control process strategy. The present work reports experimental and modelling results concerning the dynamics of a continuous powder mixer in steady and unsteady states. In particular, we will focus on the transitory phases that are likely to occur : starting, emptying, feeder's feeding, accidental perturbation, etc. We investigate the effect of operating variables, as rotational speed of the stirrer and the inflow rate, on the distribution of particles mass in the mixer and the intermediates flow rates, as well as that of the homogeneity of binary mixtures at the outlet of continuous mixer. A specific experimental protocol, based on image analysis, has been developed for determining mixture quality. The scale of scrutiny can be adjusted and mixture homogeneity can be calculated for this scale in real time. AMarkov chain model is proposed to describe the phenomena observed at both macro-and meso-scales. The model allows to describe the composition of the mixture in different zones of the mixer as well as in the outlet of the vessel, during steady and unsteady regimes and especially at high speed perturbations, whose interest is discussed

Abstract:
The third chapter brings the mixed media of the BAM and the 21st century together as Crawford shows that black art, after the Black Arts Movement, continues to create an alternative way of approaching art as process, not as object. The first part of this chapter shapes this process-oriented counter-literacy around the Black Arts Movement textual productions of the black book as the open book. She explores the openness of word and image texts and argues that they produce the lack of closure of black post-blackness. Through the text paintings of Glenn Ligon and the word and image books of Amiri Baraka, June Jordan, John Keene, Christopher Stackhouse, and others, this chapter unveils the unbound nature of mixed media as one of the most innovative legacies of the Black Arts Movement.

Abstract:
Dances and balls appear throughout literature as a place for young people to meet, flirt, and form relationships: as any reader of Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace, or Romeo and Juliet can attest, dance scenes provide an opportunity for writers to criticize societal expectations about courtship and partner choice, while simultaneously entertaining their readers. In this book, Sonia Gollance examines Jewish mixed-gender dancing in German and Yiddish literature, arguing that dance provides a powerful lens for understanding Jewish acculturation, secularization, and modernization. Gollance examines the specific literary qualities of dance scenes, such as the parallels between dance figures and plot structures, while also paying close attention to the broader social implications of Jewish engagement with dance during in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While traditional Jewish dance was among men only (or women only), mixed-sex dancing was the very sign of modernity, and thus a charged and complex arena for understanding the limits of acculturation, the dangers of class mixing, and the role of erotic engagement in modernization. Gollance’s book is organized around the spaces in which mixed dancing would take place: the tavern, the ballroom, the wedding, and the dance hall. Gollance also draws connections between the cultural history of social dance and contemporary popular culture, illustrating how mixed-sex dancing continues to function as a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural transitions.

Abstract:
This chapter starts by analysing three major problems of the current international monetary system: the asymmetric-adjustment problem, dependence on the monetary policy of the main reserve-issuing country, and the large demand for self-insurance by developing countries. It then explores two basic alternatives to reform the system: one route would involve a fully-fledged multi-currency reserve system; the alternative route would be to design an architecture based on the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the world’s only truly global reserve asset. These two alternative routes could be mixed in a number of ways, and in fact their complementary use may be the only possible way forward. Under such a mixed system, SDRs would become a major global reserve asset and the source of financing for IMF lending, but national/regional currencies would continue to be used as international means of payment and stores of value.

Abstract:
The Anglican reception of Newman was coloured for at least the fifty years following his death by the sense of loss, even betrayal, consequent upon his move to the Roman Catholic Church and his disillusionment with the Via Media ecclesiology of a ‘reformed Catholicism’ that he had advocated as an Anglican. Nevertheless there were those, such as the Anglo-Catholic Lord Halifax, who continued to find inspiration in Newman. Michael Ramsey and Pope Paul VI both responded positively to his writings, and the shift in ecumenical attitudes in Vatican II brought a renewed Anglican appreciation of him, particularly in the acceptance of the development of doctrine. Appreciation was especially shown in Anglican evaluations on the centenary of Newman’s death, though sometimes mixed with criticism.

Abstract:
The routine functions of government and private institutions require a continual supply of data about us in order to administer effectively the many services that are an integral part of modern life. The provision of health services, social security, credit, insurance, and the prevention and detection of crime assume the availability of a considerable quantity of personal data and, hence, a willingness by individuals to supply it. The ubiquity of computers and computer networks facilitates almost instant storage, retrieval, and transfer of data, a far cry from the world of manual filing systems. At the core of all data protection legislation is the proposition that data relating to an identifiable individual should not be collected in the absence of a genuine purpose or the consent of the individual concerned. Adherence to, and enforcement of, this idea (and the associated rights of access and correction) has been mixed in the nearly 100 jurisdictions that have enacted data protection legislation. This chapter assesses the extent to which these statutes have succeeded in protecting personal data.

Abstract:
Abstract At the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP), various vessels are designed to be agitated with internal pulse jet mixers (PJMs) in order to provide a means of mixing with no moving parts local to the vessel. PJMs are operated by use of an applied vacuum to draw liquid in followed by motive air to force liquid out (while not completely discharging all the liquid). This continual operation results in mixing of the vessel contents. In off-normal conditions, PJMs may completely discharge resulting in air rapidly injected into the vessel (PJM overblow). An evaluation is complete to determine the statically applied transient acoustic event loads resulting from Pulse Jet Mixer (PJM) overblow on a vessel’s internal submerged structures. The high-frequency acoustic load on internal structures is determined via analysis of overblow hydrophone test data, vessel modal and harmonic analysis, determination of an overblow forcing function through a Fourier analysis of test data compared to modal analysis of the vessel, application of the overblow forcing function in a finite element analysis model with acoustic fluid elements, use of a displacement-response spectra, and Hooke’s Law. Compared to previous analyses, this improved method can account for changes to PJM cavity pressure, PJM nozzle diameter, and more accurately represents the loads because it considers geometric constraints.

An evaluation is complete to determine the statically applied transient Rayleigh-Plesset bubble loads resulting from PJM overblow on the vessel’s internal submerged structures. The low-frequency bubble loads on internal structures is determined via analysis of overblow test data, application of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation based on bubble pressure, PJM nozzle critical flow ratios, conservation of momentum, the relative equation of motion of a submerged non-fixed structure subject to both relative drag and relative acceleration, non-flow boundary conditions, use of a displacement-response spectra, and Hooke’s Law. This theoretical Rayleigh-Plesset bubble loads model accounts for various vessel and internal submerged structure designs and different operational states: PJM cavity pressure, liquid density, depth of submerged bubble, and both choked or non-choked flow through the PJM nozzle.

Abstract:
Although Lagrangian and Hamiltonian analytical mechanics represent perhaps the most remarkable expressions of the dynamics of a mechanical system, these approaches also come with limitations. In particular, there is inherent difficulty to represent dissipative processes and the restrictions placed on end point variations are not consistent with the definition of initial value problems. The present work on poroelastic media extends the recent formulation of a mixed convolved action to address a continuum dynamical problem with dissipation through the development of a new variational approach. The action in this proposed approach is formed by replacing the inner product in Hamilton’s principle with a time convolution. As a result, dissipative processes can be represented in a natural way and the required constraints on the variations are consistent with the actual initial and boundary conditions of the problem. The variational formulations developed here employ temporal impulses of velocity, effective stress, pore pressure and pore fluid mass flux as primary variables in this mixed approach, which also uses convolution operators and fractional calculus to achieve the desired characteristics. The resulting mixed convolved action is formulated in both the time and frequency domains to develop two new stationary principles for dynamic poroelasticity. In addition, the first variation of the action provides a temporally well-balanced weak form that leads to a new family of finite element methods in time, as well as space.

Tucker-Blackmon, Angelicque. Engagement in Engineering Pathways “E-PATH” An Initiative to Retain Non-Traditional Students in Engineering Year Three Summative External Evaluation Report. Innovative Learning Center, LLC, July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.52012/tyob9090.

Full text
Abstract:
The summative external evaluation report described the program's impact on faculty and students participating in recitation sessions and active teaching professional development sessions over two years. Student persistence and retention in engineering courses continue to be a challenge in undergraduate education, especially for students underrepresented in engineering disciplines. The program's goal was to use peer-facilitated instruction in core engineering courses known to have high attrition rates to retain underrepresented students, especially women, in engineering to diversify and broaden engineering participation. Knowledge generated around using peer-facilitated instruction at two-year colleges can improve underrepresented students' success and participation in engineering across a broad range of institutions. Students in the program participated in peer-facilitated recitation sessions linked to fundamental engineering courses, such as engineering analysis, statics, and dynamics. These courses have the highest failure rate among women and underrepresented minority students. As a mixed-methods evaluation study, student engagement was measured as students' comfort with asking questions, collaboration with peers, and applying mathematics concepts. SPSS was used to analyze pre-and post-surveys for statistical significance. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations and focus group sessions with recitation leaders. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculty members and students to understand their experiences in the program. Findings revealed that women students had marginalization and intimidation perceptions primarily from courses with significantly more men than women. However, they shared numerous strategies that could support them towards success through the engineering pathway. Women and underrepresented students perceived that they did not have a network of peers and faculty as role models to identify within engineering disciplines. The recitation sessions had a positive social impact on Hispanic women. As opportunities to collaborate increased, Hispanic womens' social engagement was expected to increase. This social engagement level has already been predicted to increase women students' persistence and retention in engineering and result in them not leaving the engineering pathway. An analysis of quantitative survey data from students in the three engineering courses revealed a significant effect of race and ethnicity for comfort in asking questions in class, collaborating with peers outside the classroom, and applying mathematical concepts. Further examination of this effect for comfort with asking questions in class revealed that comfort asking questions was driven by one or two extreme post-test scores of Asian students. A follow-up ANOVA for this item revealed that Asian women reported feeling excluded in the classroom. However, it was difficult to determine whether these differences are stable given the small sample size for students identifying as Asian. Furthermore, gender differences were significant for comfort in communicating with professors and peers. Overall, women reported less comfort communicating with their professors than men. Results from student metrics will inform faculty professional development efforts to increase faculty support and maximize student engagement, persistence, and retention in engineering courses at community colleges. Summative results from this project could inform the national STEM community about recitation support to further improve undergraduate engineering learning and educational research.
