Bonora, Laura, Donatella Carboni, and Matteo De Vincenzi, eds. Eighth International Symposium “Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurement Techniques”. Firenze University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-5518-147-1.

Full text
Abstract:
The 8th International Symposium "Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurements Techniques" was organized by CNR-IBE in collaboration with FCS Foundation, and Natural History Museum of the Mediterranean and under the patronage of University of Florence, Accademia dei Geogofili, Tuscany Region and Livorno Province. It is the occasion in which scholars can illustrate and exchange their activities and innovative proposals, with common aims to promote actions to preserve coastal marine environment. Considering Symposium interdisciplinary nature, the Scientific Committee, underlining this holistic view of Nature, decided to celebrate Alexander von Humboldt; a nature scholar that proposed the organic and inorganic nature’s aspects as a single system. It represents a sign of continuity considering that in-presence Symposium could not be carried out due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Subjects are related to coastal topics: morphology; flora and fauna; energy production; management and integrated protection; geography and landscape, cultural heritage and environmental assets, legal and economic aspects.

Sikich, Geary W. Protecting Your Business in a Pandemic. Praeger, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216002307.

Full text
Abstract:
This practical guide helps leaders understand the threat pandemics pose to society, the overall economy, and their businesses. Using illustrative examples, this book helps readers develop business-continuity plans to deal with the economic and medical consequences of a crisis. A pandemic is an epidemic that covers a huge swath of the country or even the world. And it's just as scary as it sounds: For example, it's estimated that up to a third of the U.S. population could fall ill in an Avian flu pandemic, costing the U.S. economy alone up to $675 billion. Worse, pandemics shatter lives and businesses and tend to rock society to its foundations. But humanity has been through pandemics before. As disaster-management and business-continuity expert Geary Sikich shows in this book, there are ways to make the best of a bad situation. These methods improve the chance that businesses will remain resilient, and people healthy, employed, and productive—even in the darkest days of an international disaster. Practical and hands on, the book provides step-by-step guidance in the form of evaluation and assessment tools, exercises, and detailed examples. Special tools include an easy-to-use roadmap for developing and maintaining a comprehensive business-continuity plan.

Shergaziev, Uranbek, ed. GLOBAL FOOD FORUM — 2021 DIALOGUE WITHOUT BORDERS. EurAsian Scientific Editions, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56948/gebt7753.

Full text
Abstract:
The collection presents the reports of participants of the Global Food Forum organized by Moscow State University of Food Production (MSUFP) jointly with the Council for Science and Continuing Education of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly, with the support of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management of the Federal Assembly and the assistance of Moscow Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization. The Global Food Forum 2021 became a venue for wide-ranging discussion of plans and actions realised in the Russian Federation and a number of foreign organisations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. A number of proposals were made towards coordination of inter-sectoral actions along the entire chain of food systems (production, transportation, storage, distribution and consumption), drawing special attention to the problems coupled with Sustainable Development Goals in scientific research, their expansion and allocation of necessary resources for these purposes, training of required personnel, including highly qualified staff. The Forum was attended by representatives of 28 universities and research institutes from such countries as: Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Germany, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan, Bulgaria and the UAE. The global attention to the Forum is accounted for by the importance of uniting world community efforts for identification and prevention of internal and external threats to food security, for development of common constructive decisions on improvement of food systems, on achieving progress, through the food resource, in respect of all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals with the view of sustainable reproduction of healthy and full-value life.

Sivarasu, Sudesh. Medical Devices Innovation for Africa: enabling industrialisation. University of Cape Town Libraries, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.15641/uctlib40.

Full text
Abstract:
It is with great pleasure to recognise all our partners in the merSETA Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge who contributed to this publication: University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University KwaZulu Natal, University of Witwatersrand and National Technologies Implementation Platform. Thank you, Professor Sivarasu, for your leadership of the University of Cape Town for supporting these efforts to find new forms of collaboration that focus on “Skills for localisation” and “Skills for re-industrialisation”. This publication comes at a time when South Africa and the world are still recovering from the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic complicated by an emerging war in Ukraine. This is expected to continue disrupting social and economic activities, including education, training, and work. The merSETA and its stakeholders are working tirelessly to ensure that training and other skills development activities continue despite these challenges. This innovation project, among others at the merSETA, utilises existing research and Higher Education Institution (HEI) Infrastructure to stimulate rapid response technology innovation aimed at the development, design and prototype production of a medical device in response not only to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to an economic sector dominated by imports. To serve the skills development mandate of the merSETA, the project investigates the technology management capabilities or future skills required to accelerate South Africa’s post-covid recovery. The concept of innovation, as vested in this program, is aligned to the merSETA’s strategic intentions, that include: i. Supporting skills for Economic Reconstruction, Recovery and Growth, ii. Supporting skills for the changing world of work, iii. Supporting skills for the growth and sustainability of the green and circular economies and iv. Exploring and supporting the role of the mer-sector in the digital economy, as well as v. Continuing to strengthen the role of the SETA as an intermediary body Making informed sector skills planning decisions is the objective of this program. – that is, to understand those future jobs that would drive the localisation of components in a model that could stimulate expanded manufacturing opportunities through relevant skills supply. The merSETA’s Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge anticipates a contribution towards closing the skills gap through a job generation model. The merSETA remains committed and is looking forward to engaging on how this initiative sees a pipeline of new product innovations expanding the manufacturing sector. We owe it to the citizens of South Africa to find innovative ways of harnessing our young talent into industrial expansion.
