Particularly, under universal relation our results deduce the classical coincidence point theorems of Goebel, Jungck and others. Is amnesia the mother of discontinuity? Perhaps surprisingly, amnesia is perfectly compatible with psychological continuity. Think, for example, of David Wiggins’ version of Locke. Wiggins first describes a relation C of strong co-consciousness which gives continuity ‘between person Ptj and person Qtk such that, for some sufficiency of things actually done, witnessed, experienced, … at any time by Ptj, Qtk should later have sufficient real or apparent recollection of then doing, witnessing, experiencing, … them.’ Wiggins continues:… anyone bent on grasping the nerve of Locke's conception of pe

Existence, uniqueness and monotonic behavior of the solution of classical flow distribution problem for hydraulic networks with pressure-dependent closure relations was proved. The closure relation can have very general form, restricted only by continuity and monotonicity conditions necessary for providing existence, uniqueness and continuity of flow distribution problem for each branch. It is shown that network as a whole “inherits” monotonicity and continuity of its branches behavior, and this provides existence and uniqueness of solution.

Abstract:
AbstractLogical relations are one among the most powerful techniques in the theory of programming languages, and have been used extensively for proving properties of a variety of higher-order calculi. However, there are properties that cannot be immediately proved by means of logical relations, for instance program continuity and differentiability in higher-order languages extended with real-valued functions. Informally, the problem stems from the fact that these properties are naturally expressed on terms of non-ground type (or, equivalently, on open terms of base type), and there is no apparent good definition for a base case (i.e. for closed terms of ground types). To overcome this issue, we study a generalization of the concept of a logical relation, called open logical relation, and prove that it can be fruitfully applied in several contexts in which the property of interest is about expressions of first-order type. Our setting is a simply-typed $$\lambda $$ λ -calculus enriched with real numbers and real-valued first-order functions from a given set, such as the one of continuous or differentiable functions. We first prove a containment theorem stating that for any collection of real-valued first-order functions including projection functions and closed under function composition, any well-typed term of first-order type denotes a function belonging to that collection. Then, we show by way of open logical relations the correctness of the core of a recently published algorithm for forward automatic differentiation. Finally, we define a refinement-based type system for local continuity in an extension of our calculus with conditionals, and prove the soundness of the type system using open logical relations.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper will consider two levels within the study of the Cuban revolution: the meta-narratives of change and continuity that determine the academic literature on Cuba and inform political positioning in relation to the revolution, and the methodological challenges in understanding how people in Cuba experience change and continuity in their daily life. Transformation and continuity have been the two dominant analytical tropes used to interpret Cuban social and political life since the overthrow of the Batista regime in 1959. For Cuban scholars and politicians, a focus on change in reference to what was Cuba’s reality before the Revolution is a continuous concern and a powerful discursive mechanism in redefining and reinvigorating the revolutionary project. Simultaneously, in periods of crisis throughout the 62 years since the revolution, the capacity to demonstrate continuity with revolutionary principles while developing new mechanisms to redefine the political project has ensured the revolution’s subsistence. Conversely, continuity and change are also harnessed by critics of Cuba’s current regime to articulate the ever-imminent collapse of socialism in the region. Change has been their main focus of concern during critical historic moments that affected the trajectory of the Cuban revolutionary project. From this perspective, change embodies a promise of progress and implies a movement toward liberal democracy and a pro-US foreign policy, while continuity denotes failure, stagnation, and repression. At the core of the analysis of change in Cuba lies a concern with the nature of the state. Ethnographic data reveals the partialities and contradictions people experience in their daily life and across time. Two elements of ethnographic experience are particularly informative: life histories that span across the revolutionary period, and generational conflicts surrounding political issues. I will focus on the life history of key informants and the generational conflicts that surround their experience, a well as their material contexts (their neighborhood, their house, their job), all of which help to elucidate the complexities of studying change within a permanent revolution.

Abstract:
The present study introduces a micromechanical model for predicting nonlinear viscoelastic responses of composite systems reinforced with solid spherical micro particles. The composite microstructures are simplified with uniformly distributed cubic particles over an infinite medium. The representative volume element (RVE) consists of a single particle embedded in the cubic matrix. One eighth unit-cell model with four particle and polymer subcells is generated. The solid spherical particle is modeled as linear elastic, while the polymer follows nonlinear viscoelastic material responses. The hom

This paper discusses the theoretical and experimental results of a position control system using a pneumatic actuator driven by fast switching on/off valves. To begin with, there is a brief introduction about servo-pneumatic systems driven by fast switching valves. Subsequently, the mathematical model of the servo-pneumatic system is discussed involving directional fast switching on/off valves and the flow control valves, modeled according to the mass flow equation based on ISO 6358 and the actuator modeled by Newton’s second law and the continuity equation. The system control is performed thr

Numerical simulation of heat and fluid flow in a basic and an orifice pulse tube refrigerator have been performed to visualize heat pumping generated in the regenerator and the pulse tube, and to clarify the difference in heat pumping caused by the phase difference between pressure and displacement of gas. Common components of the regenerator and the pulse tube are used in the basic and the orifice pulse tube refrigerator. The flow in the tube is assumed to be one-dimensional and compressible. As governing equations, the continuity, momentum and energy equations are used in this study. From th

1.1 Macroeconomic summary Economic recovery has consistently outperformed the technical staff’s expectations following a steep decline in activity in the second quarter of 2020. At the same time, total and core inflation rates have fallen and remain at low levels, suggesting that a significant element of the reactivation of Colombia’s economy has been related to recovery in potential GDP. This would support the technical staff’s diagnosis of weak aggregate demand and ample excess capacity. The most recently available data on 2020 growth suggests a contraction in economic activity of 6.8%, lowe
