Full text
Abstract:
Quality assurance (QA) in echocardiography is the systematic process of ensuring that information sent out by echo laboratories is timely, appropriate, and accurate. All aspects of a service need to be continuously monitored and optimized if quality is to be maintained and furthermore improved.Particular focus is needed on reporting and measurement with continuous checking for reporting errors and assessment of measurement variability.A systematic QA programme needs to be an essential part of any echo laboratory. Life-determining clinical decisions may depend on it. In this chapter we describe the background to QA, current evidence and guidelines, and a systematic approach to QA.

Abstract:
Quality assurance in echocardiography is the systematic process of ensuring that information sent out by echo laboratories is timely, appropriate, and accurate. QA may be both an internal and an external process. QA relates to all aspects of a service, so not only should reports be timely, accurate, and useful, but the patient’s experience should be a safe and positive one. All aspects of a service need to be continuously monitored and optimized if quality is to be maintained and furthermore improved. Particular focus is needed on reporting and measurement with continuous checking for reporting errors and assessment of measurement variability. A systematic quality assurance programme needs to be an essential part of any echo laboratory. Life-determining clinical decisions may depend on it.

Abstract:
Critical care nurses and the whole multidisciplinary team have a responsibility to ensure that they use the most appropriate treatments and care procedures, to continually evaluate the effectiveness and value of the interventions they perform and the care they give, and to aim for continuous improvement of their service. This chapter discusses how research should be applied in practice, key principles of audit, quality assurance and quality improvement, standard setting, illness severity scoring systems, and the prediction and measurement of patient outcomes. The challenges of managing long-term patients and ethical issues, such as treatment withdrawal, bereavement, and care of relatives, are also reviewed

Abstract:
Consistent evaluation is an important prerequisite for quality assurance and continuous further development in the area of DaF/DaZ. With a focus on virtual learning, this volume deals with the evaluation of the Inverted Classroom Model for the training of teachers of German as a foreign language and specifically with language learning apps. A second focus is on the evaluation of exams and tests. In addition to the medical language examination and the qualification tests of future teachers, the focus here is on examiner qualifications. The critical discussion will present suggestions for solutions as well as new research approaches. This volume does justice to the claim that theory and practice are closely intertwined. Christina Maria Ersch studied German and Scandinavian Studies in Göttingen and German as a foreign language in Mainz, where she is a research assistant. She has been teaching German as a foreign language for several years, is a certified telc examiner and conducts advanced training courses in neurodidactics and action-oriented learning. Her research interests are, among other things, in general didactics with a focus on competence-oriented, digital learning and in intercultural communication.

Clapham, Andrew. 4. Torture. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198706168.003.0004.

Abstract:
The prohibition on torture in the UN Convention against Torture is described in absolute terms, but torture continues around the world. What is the purpose of torture? How has it changed through history? ‘Torture’ focuses on three issues: torture in the ‘war on terror’; information gleaned from torture; and the prohibition on sending anyone to a country where there is a strong likelihood of them being tortured. Are some incidents of torture or ill-treatment justified to avert a terrorist attack? How can a country’s assurance that a citizen will not be tortured on their return be monitored?

Escolme, Bridget. Shakespeare and the Contemporary. Edited by James C. Bulman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199687169.013.11.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst the cultural materialist scholarship of the 1980s asserted that Shakespeare can never be our contemporary, actors, directors, and voice practitioners have insisted with equal assurance and political passion that Shakespeare always has something to say to the contemporary moment. This chapter uses three recent productions of Othello as case studies to consider the artistic and ideological work that rendering Shakespeare ‘our contemporary’ allows his plays to do in order to current and historical constructions of social class and race. Even as the chapter continues the cultural materialist project of naming the theatrical and cultural strategies of appropriation used by Shakespeare production, it also seeks to explore the theatrical and cultural work Shakespeare does to the contemporary. It suggests that performing Shakespeare is always a dialogue between the discourses, theatrical conventions, and political concerns of past and present.
