Abstract:
This chapter argues that the book fills a knowledge gap by conducting a systematic analysis of how the global gag rule affects women’s reproductive health across developing regions. The book extends the focus of the two previous econometric studies of the global gag rule’s impact in sub-Saharan Africa to include three additional developing regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia. This statistical analysis is grounded in a conceptual framework that models the complex factors that influence women’s decision-making about fertility. The chapter also describes the book’s multimethod approach to examining restrictions on women’s reproductive health through historical analysis, case studies, and analysis of aggregate data. The evolution of family-planning programs, the links between contraceptive access and fertility rates, the relationship between restrictive abortion laws and abortion rates, and the likelihood of other adverse effects are also introduced.

Cambie, RC, and AA Brewis. Anti-Fertility Plants of the Pacific. CSIRO Publishing, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100626.

Abstract:
There is a growing appreciation of traditional medical systems as a source of considerable knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. Traditional medicines have the potential to offer leads to identifying potentially valuable chemicals that can be developed into new and more effective drugs, including safer contraceptives. The Pacific region is an excellent arena in which to search for such chemicals as: the area contains plant species not found elsewhere; there is every indication that many of the plants used more generally in traditional Pacific medicine may be efficacious – of 74 plants surveyed in one study 86% showed pharmacological activity; and in many Pacific traditions, knowledge of medicinal use is transmitted between generations as part of an inherited body of ethnomedical knowledge. This book documents all the available information on plants that have been used traditionally for anti-fertility and fertility purposes in the Pacific region, and indicates which of these plants hold the most promise for providing new anti-fertility agents. It also records instances in which the plant has been used outside the region.

Full text
Abstract:
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, with at least half a million women developing the disease each year. This chapter details the significance of infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) as the main risk factor, and summarizes current knowledge on additional risk factors of significance including tobacco use, oral contraceptives, parity, and other sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. For other factors such as diet, BMI, and physical activity, impact on risk appears limited. The chapter outlines both the importance of cervical cytological screening in reducing the incidence of this cancer form and the latest prevention opportunities for the disease that have emerged since the realization of its infectious cause, namely, HPV vaccination and HPV-based screening. It also describes that access to these cervical cancer prevention strategies is as yet unequally distributed across the world, especially in those regions that may be in largest need.

Antommaria, Armand H. Matheny. Conscientious Objection in Reproductive Health. Edited by Leslie Francis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199981878.013.10.

Full text
Abstract:
Conscientious objection in health care generally involves conflicts between health care providers asserting authority not to provide certain goods and services such as emergency contraception or abortion and patients seeking them. The conflict is may be exacerbated by objectors’ refusal to cooperate with others performing these actions. Equitable resolution of this conflict depends on the role responsibilities of health care providers and the availability of alternatives for patients. Protection of the integrity of providers should not substabtially limit patients’ access to needed goods and services, especially because of the power and knowledge differential between health care professionals and patients and the restrictions on patients obtaining goods and services through other means. Although professional obligations entail clear duties such as notification, informed consent, and emergency treatment, there is contining debate about obligations to refer and what constitutes discrimination. Organizations may make analogous claims regarding their integrity and similar systems should be developed to assure patient access.

Solinger, Rickie. Reproductive Politics. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/wentk/9780199811403.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Reproductive politics is a term coined by feminists in the 1970s to describe contemporary, Roe v. Wade-era power struggles over contraception and abortion, adoption and surrogacy, and other satellite issues. Forty years later, questions of reproductive rights are just as complex--and controversial--as they were then. Focusing mainly on the United States, Reproductive Politics explores the legal, political, religious, social, ethical, and medical dimensions of this hotly contested arena. Tracing the historical roots of reproductive politics up through the present, Rickie Solinger adopts a question-and-answer format to shed light on such questions as: are sex and reproduction “private” or “public” matters? When was abortion criminalized in the United States--and why? What is “abstinence only” sex education? And how is “reproductive politics” a men’s issue as well as a women’s issue? Covering a substantial range of information in an accessible and lively manner, Solinger orients readers and provides the knowledge necessary to enter into dialogue with this important and continually evolving field.
