Upstream contracts in petroleum sector may alter the behaviour of the contractor. This alteration may deviate the production path from the optimal one; this adverse effect is called distortionary effect of contracts. In this paper the distortionary effect of a risk service contract is evaluated using the data from an oil field in Middle East. The field is operated under a risk service contract signed in 2000 to increase the production by around 80,000 bbl/day. The Kurdistan Region's oil and gas investment law stipulated its adoption, while it was mentioned in the draft federal Iraqi oil and gas law . In general, the production sharing co

Abstract It has been noted time and again that contract farming arrangements manifest a bewildering variety and that as an analytical category, perhaps the only thing that binds all contract schemes together is the contract. Yet even the notion of a contract is not straightforward in many developing country contexts. This chapter discusses the immense diversity of contracts and contract farming arrangements and the use of contracts to set the balance of power between contractor and grower. It highlights how at times contracts are written to control the production process and at other times to ensure that the firm can distance itself from the process. It also highlights a pervasive “signing without reading” problem in developing countries and the many suggestions to redress these challenges around the writing of contracts.

Abstract:
AbstractThe chapter argues for preparing European institutions for the transformation of knowledge production. Firstly, it delineates the current challenges, refocusing attention on the real dangers. The neoliberalisation of knowledge production, research and educational institutions fundamentally weakens the infrastructure and the transformative potential of knowledge produced. It also contributes to the decentralisation of science, which is driven by transnational cooperations outside the national quality assurance institution. Secondly, it discusses three key elements for a new gender contract—access, content and staff—explaining their relevance. Feminists have been struggling to break the hierarchies and exclusionary practices shaped and transmitted by higher education for centuries. This chapter analyses responses to the recent challenges of de-democratisation, by arguing that scholars should take action to start separate institutions, and decentralisation of science, by arguing that the internationalisation of science can be as threatening to the original mission of education as re-nationalisation. Thirdly, it proposes key policy recommendations. In the end, it argues for a policy change in European Union policies, especially due to the influx of refugee scholars for rethinking Europe. This chapter argues that the seemingly paralysed and non-responsive actors contribute to the spreading of illiberal alternatives in Europe.

Abstract:
Abstract Agricultural contracts are agreements between the owners of various inputs over the biological stages of food production. Biological stages of production are often heavily influenced by nature both in terms of random shocks and seasonal constraints. Nature can create large opportunities for transaction costs, constrain production specialization, and impose risk on individuals. This chapter focuses on the two main types of land contracts: cropshares and cash rents. It identifies a number of characteristics of these contracts and their evolution over time. We argue that a transaction cost framework remains the most robust theory to understand the structure of contracts and note that evidence from the past 20 years confirms this. Indeed, the transaction cost model has shown its usefulness in the new environmental literature on soil conservation in light of climate change. Finally, we argue that when market selection effects are considered, the transaction cost model is also consistent with some of the new findings regarding risk aversion and contract choice.
