The Introduction establishes the book’s central research questions, introduces the reader to China’s contradictory approach to state control, and highlights the limitations of the existing literature while also summarizing the book’s core argument. The People’s Republic of China claims that sovereignty is the guiding principle of its foreign policy. State control, which is constitutive of sovereignty, could serve as a “regulative idea” that shapes a China-led international order. Instead of consistently following this regulative idea, however, China’s foreign policy is contradictory and China is sometimes willing to compromise the principle of state control. These contradictions shape how China is able to influence the future international order. China’s foreign policy contradictions are rooted in its domestic vulnerabilities. This means that instead of replacing it with an alternative “China Model,” China’s rise will lead to a fragmentation, pluralization, and particularization of the international order.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Benson’s contributions as a vocal political activist in the 1950s and 1960s through his assumption of the presidency of the Church in the mid-1980s. In particular, it grapples with his elaboration of the notion of “free agency,” a foundational principle of Mormon theology enunciated in the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s teachings, which emphasized individual moral capacity and responsibility. Benson in particular rearticulated this idea to emphasize dual, and seemingly contradictory, principles: a moralistic libertarian political philosophy, which asserted that too much government was morally corrupting and a threat to “free agency,” and at the same time, loyalty and commitment to the institution of the LDS church. This chapter shows how Benson developed the notion of free agency from the Mormon tradition and the central place it assumed in Mormon theology by the end of his career.

Drawing on writings by Sergei Eisenstein and many others, the chapter asks the following questions in relation to still and moving images: can we envision a rhythm that, at a juncture between the aesthetic and the political, does not operate as a principle of systematic organisation? What image of the past and of the collective would this other rhythm engender?

Chapter 6 discusses Hume’s argument that nothing could exist necessarily. That argument premises that any necessary proposition has a contradictory negation and that whatever exists can be conceived not to exist. The chapter argues that both claims are false. Counter-examples to the first come from metaphysical theories, identity-statements, color-exclusion, and cases of supervenience. The second needs disambiguating, as “conceivable” can mean “imaginable” or “cannot be known to be false a priori.” The principle turns out to be false on both readings. Finally, the chapter rejects Richard Swinburne’s recent attempt to update Hume’s argument.

This chapter focuses on the limits of Forst’s right to justification. It argues that Forst failed to integrate the transcendental and the critical dimension of justification by establishing an immanent connection. Rather, he oscillated inconsequently between these dimensions in a methodologically indecisive manner. Forst shielded the right to justification, qua universal principle, in a self-contradictory way from systematic and self-reflective criticism, thereby hiding the presumptions, blind spots, and potential exclusions of his own theory. The main reason for these failures lies in Forst’s concept of noumenal power. This concept was incapable of advancing beyond on empty formalism, thus preventing an adequate analysis of indirect perpetuations of inequality and oppression.

This chapter analyses how Carl Schmitt’s apocalyptic political mythology can provide a critical form for grasping contemporary challenges to the tradition of popular democratic rule. Schmitt’s conception of an ‘illiberal’ democracy is based on seemingly contradictory elements of both ‘populism’ and ‘technocratic elitism’, attempting as it does to wed the popular enthusiasm of mass democracy to a concrete order through the principle of a shared homogeneous identity and the somewhat paradoxical idea of a ‘charismatic bureaucracy’. This amalgamation of authoritarianism and popular sovereignty emanates from what can be described as Schmitt’s ‘katechontic impulse’, a name derived from a Biblical figure introduced by St Paul. The Katechon is the principle or the person that restrains lawlessness or ‘the lawless one’, often interpreted as Antichrist and his reign before the end of days. The chapter shows how Schmitt’s apocalyptic imagery of an ordered popular sovereignty can be illustrated by this politico-theological mytheme and further investigates the implications thereof for contemporary democratic politics.
