The major archaeological research interest for many Anglo-American biblical scholars was its direct reflection on the biblical record. Many were devout and reared on a literal reading of Scripture. Traditional scholars insisted that the function of archaeology was to provide evidence to validate the Bible and to disprove higher criticism. The sudden and dramatic increase in Biblical translation during that era was such that the influence of this activity on the development of translation theory cannot be ignored. Bible translation has been the subject of numerous studies throughout the ages. The Reformation, however, stands out in this regard because of the special political, religious and cultural context of that time.
