Abstract:
This chapter examines St Thomas Aquinas' political ideas. Aquinas combined Aristotelian ideas with Christian concepts, distinguishing between the natural and supernatural orders, and attributing inherent validity to the natural order, including political life. His theory of law linked, through reason, the eternal law of God, natural law, human positive law, and divine law. According to Aquinas, government's justification was its purpose — securing the common good. He favoured limited monarchy in a mixed constitution. The chapter first provides a short biography of Aquinas before discussing his views on natural and supernatural orders, government, tyranny, and temporal and spiritual power. It concludes with an assessment of Aquinas' contribution to political thought in the area of just war theory.

Abstract:
This contribution examines, through a discussion of Thomas Aquinas’s teaching, what philosophers in the later Middle Ages thought about the nature of pleasure. Generally speaking, Aquinas and his contemporaries consider pleasures as passions of the soul. After exploring what this means for their understanding of pleasure, it is explained how this approach to pleasure is compatible with two aspects we often associate with pleasure: perfection and feeling. The essay then turns to the distinction between different kinds of pleasures, especially between sensory and intellectual pleasures. This leads to the question of where pleasures are located in the soul and to the idea, defended by some authors, that truly human pleasures belong to the will. Finally, by way of concluding, some brief indications are given as to how other later medieval philosophers further develop or react to the views on pleasure that we can find in Aquinas’s works.

Abstract:
Although Thomas Aquinas is perhaps known best for his natural theology and arguments for the existence of God, he thought that there were manifold ways of knowing God available to human beings. This chapter distinguishes and identifies within Aquinas’s thought seven such ways. One can know God (1) by a general and confused knowledge, (2) by a philosophical wisdom, (3) by divine revelation, (4) by faith, (5) by mystical wisdom, (6) by theological wisdom, and (7) by beatific vision. The chapter discusses the epistemic nature, properties, and limits of all seven. The main point is that Aquinas’s thought is rich enough to accommodate and account for all seven ways of knowing God. Such a comprehensive overview of Aquinas helps move past polemical contexts in which Aquinas is charged with reducing the knowledge of God to natural theology or failing to prioritize the Word of God.
