Abstract:
This chapter addresses the neurological and medical factors associated with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). PNES can occur concurrently with epilepsy in 5 to 20% of patients. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of epilepsy, but it is also commonly cited by patients with PNES as the primary cause of their seizures. PNES are also overrepresented in patients with intellectual and learning disabilities. Patients with PNES usually have additional subjective neurological and medical complaints. Pain complaints are overrepresented in patients with PNES and are a major contributor

Heart disease is a major contributor to stroke and other neurologic disorders in adults. Cardioembolic stroke accounts for roughly 15% of all stroke, and the most common mechanism is cardiac arrhythmia, with atrial fibrillation the leading contributor. Anticoagulation such as using aspirin or warfarin is chosen based on the presence of associated risk factors including congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, and diabetes mellitus. Heart failure ranks second in the incidence of stroke from cardioembolism, with other risk factors being endocarditis, severe cardiomyopathy, acute myocardial i

Abstract:
By drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s (1999) ecological framework, this mixed-method paper recognizes school discontinuation not as an event but as a culmination of an interplay of various factors over time. Adopting a life course perspective and analyzing reasons given by adolescents for “not being in school” across the four middle- and low-income Young Lives study countries, three broad categories of reasons for early school leaving emerge. These are push factors, pull factors, and opted-out factors. Findings revealed that pull factors emerge as the greatest contributor toward children discontinuin

Embolic disease during pregnancy is a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. The most common type of embolism is venous air embolism, but this is rarely symptomatic or hemodynamically significant. However, both thromboembolism and amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) are associated with significant maternal risk, and in the case of AFE, frequent major hemodynamic sequelae and fatal results ensue. As each class of embolic disease has slightly different risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment, they will each be discussed in separate sections in this cha

Despite its prevalence, the etiology and pathogenesis of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has yet to be fully elucidated due to this disorder’s complexity. Research into causal and contributory factors has been limited, yet there is emerging evidence that environmental factors play an important role and, furthermore, that specific environmental factors may be characteristic of BDD and possibly contribute to the development and maintenance of the disorder. This chapter summarizes the accumulating evidence that incomplete or even apparent complete recovery of renal function after acute kidney injury (AKI) may be an important contributor to a growing number of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases, largely in excess of the global growth in CKD prevalence. Evidence based on epidemiologic studies supports the notion that even after adjustment for several important covariates AKI is independently associated with an increased risk for both CKD and ESRD. Several risk factors for the subsequent development of CKD

Abstract:
Early school bell times incompatible with adolescent sleep needs and patterns are a major contributor to widespread adolescent sleep insufficiency. Biological delay in sleep onset and social pressures during puberty, combined with the need to arise early on weekdays, make obtaining adequate and optimally timed sleep difficult for most adolescents, potentially impacting physical and emotional wellbeing, safety, and academic performance. Accumulating studies demonstrate that delaying school start times can effectively counter chronic insufficient sleep in adolescents, as well as enhance health,

Integrative preventive medicine (IPM) identifies complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as a key contributor to the goal of extending disease-free high-quality life; CAM provides therapeutic approaches that are amenable to self-care, are cost-effective, are minimally invasive, and have minimal potential for side effects. Using CAM in IPM results in a shift away from passive screenings and treatment-centered approaches to prevention-focused care. Integrative preventive medicine redefines and expands the levels of prevention to include evidence-based CAM at each level of prevention alongsi

Pregnancy-related heart disease is increasing worldwide and peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is an important contributor to early (<42 days postpartum) and late (up to 1 year postpartum) maternal death. PPCM is an idiopathic form of cardiomyopathy, presenting with heart failure secondary to left ventricular dysfunction towards the end of pregnancy, or in the months following delivery, where no other cause of heart failure is identified. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. Incidence and prognosis varies according to geography and is likely due to multiple factors. The recent specific pathophysio
