Full text80% of schizophrenic patients are attended by their relatives. This high involvement of the family with the patient could generate an impact in both the relative’s health and the development of the patient’s disease. That is why the purpose of this research is to describe the characteristics present on the capacity to control and tolerate stress in a group of 10 relatives of female Schizophrenic patients. The evaluation was performed with the Rorschach Test, using the comprehensive system and with a semi-structured interview. The Rorschach results were contrasted with the data obtained by Ráez (2007), where significant differences were found in four of the variables. The results determined that Lambda (L) and Social Inability (CDI) were greater in the study group and Accesible Experience (EA) and Sufferable Experience (es) were smaller. This shows that family members tend to confront reality in a defensive way, trying to avoid getting emotionally and cognitively involved with the patient. Furthermore, it also indicates a difficulty in generating and directing answers in stress situations, resulting in negative interactions. This is related to the poverty levels the group lives in. Moreover, the content analysis enhances the passive and avoidance ways to confront stressful situations. Finally, the limitations and scope of the study are discussed, as well as their recommendations.

Full textThis research aims to investigate the Tolerance and Stress Control in a group of peruvian university students that report regular cannabis use. The characteristics of marihuana consumption were evaluated and, through the Rorschach inkblot test, user’s ability to cope with sources of tension, in contrast to a comparative group of non-users. Contrasts with the Mann Whitney U statistic revealed a higher D score in the study group, which, when linked to the elevation of less modulated affective expressions (CF + C), loses functionality. Marihuana use was associated with higher indicators of emotional distress, greater affective and interpersonal distance, and difficulty in handling complex situations, all of which was replicated in comparative analyzes within the study group. Difficulties with regard to affectivity and interpersonal relationships undermine the effectiveness of resources and point to a fragile psychological organization in which cannabis consumption functions as a way to cope with unpleasant affective states, feelings of social inadequacy and the perception of little self-agency. We discussed the importance of taking into account the subjective experience of users and the functions of consumption, while recognizing the high emotional cost of maintaining that lifestyle. These results are useful to structure prevention and intervention programs that contribute to empower the subject and provide regulatory and coping strategies to deal with sources of tension.

Full textResearch in humans and animals have shown that individual differences and controllability over stress are critical factors to determine its main outcomes. Thus, exposure to controllable stress (CoS) buffers part of the detrimental effects of exposure to the same amount of uncontrollable stress (UnS). This buffering effect includes a protection (“immunization”) from the consequences of future exposure to UnS, highlighting the potential of prior experience with CoS as a therapeutic approach to treat stress-related disorders. In the present work, adult rats were exposed to 2 or 5 sessions of exposure to an active avoidance (TWAA) task in a shuttle-box using footshock as the aversive stimulus. This group had the possibility of control over stress, whereas an additional group received the same amount of shocks regardless of its behavior (yoked, UnS). A stress-naïve group was also included. We studied: (i) whether 2 or 5 sessions of UnS is sufficient to induce long-lasting behavioral effects on activity, arousal and anxiety-like behaviors; (ii) whether exposure to the same amount of CoS buffers the negative long-term impact observed after exposure to UnS; (iii) whether individual differences in the performance in the TWAA task or more prolonged experience with it is necessary to better observe the benefits of controllability; and (iv) the possible contribution of the changes in the expression of genes related to synaptic plasticity and epigenetic regulation in brain areas critically involved in stress (e.g. prefrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampal formation). Two phenotypes arose in the TWAA task: some animals exhibited high levels of avoidance after 2 or 5 days, whereas others showed marked deficits in acquiring the avoidance response from the first day and did not rescue this deficit despite repeated experience with the task. These phenotypes differed in their latency to escape from the first trials, suggesting that how individuals confront and respond initially to the aversive stimuli could determine how avoidance is acquired and performed. Exposure to CoS or UnS did not induce a clear behavioral profile, although UnS decreased activity in new environments and enhanced fear conditioning during exposure to the shock context. Importantly, exposure to the same amount of CoS buffered both effects. Moreover, only animals showing high avoidance rates during prolonged exposure to the TWAA task showed this beneficial effect, suggesting that actual rather than potential control over stress is a critical factor. Results from a behavioral profiling identifying “affected” and “non-affected” subpopulations based on key parameters related to activity, anxiety-like and associative behaviors indicated that prolonged exposure to CoS reduced drastically the proportion of animals identified as “affected”, an effect not shown by exposure to UnS. When gene expression (two experiments) was assessed between 2 and 13 days after stress, a decrease was observed in BDNF gene expression in CA1. Other changes, including TrkB or histone deacetylases were not consistent or complex depending on controllability, the brain area and the time elapse since stress. Therefore, we were unable to observe any clear and consistent biochemical signature of exposure to stress and the degree of control over stress. In conclusion, the present results clearly indicate that, within the frameworks of studies about the influence of controllability in the consequences of stress, the characterization of individual differences in the performance in an active avoidance tasks can contribute to distinguish between the possibility of control and the actual control over stress. Such a distinction can better understand the differences in the behavioral and biochemical consequences of exposure to CoS versus UnS and the role of actual controllability. Whether such signature can appear considering individual differences in the capability of control remains to be elucidated.

Full textConstruction workers are subject to a number of conditions and requirements impacting their emotions and the way in adapting to the circumstances of the environment. This research aims to describe the emotional expression and the capacity for control in a group of 20 construction workers. For this purpose, clusters of affectivity and control and stress tolerance of Rorschach Comprehensive System (RCS) were used. The results obtained from the sample were compared with a comparison group of similar age and socio-economic situation. In relation to affectivity, variables FC and SumC' were higher in the study group, while blank responses S were found to be decreased. Concerning to the control cluster, D and AdjD scores were better adjusted, while the left side of the eb (FM + m) appeared diminished. The results show that workers tend to involve little with their affections and avoid situations that cause stress. It would favor the appearance of some stability in capacity for control. This functioning could be considered as an adaptive mode which they have been adjusted in order to perform productive, although it would seem to be a characteristic of Lima population. In addition, based on characteristics of construction workers, the implications of the statistical findings, limitations and suggestions are mentioned.

Full textChild maltreatment has a negative impact in the development and health of children. The present investigation sought to describe the affect and control and stress tolerance of a group of twenty physically and psychologically abused children. The measurement was performed with the cluster of affect and the one of control and stress tolerance of the Comprehensive System for the Rorschach Test. The results from the Rorschach Test were contrasted with Exner’s data (2003) through the T-Test for one sample, in the case of the parametric variables; and with the Wilcoxon signed-rank Test, in the case of the non parametric variables. Seventeen significant differences were found between the groups (R, Lambda, EA, left side of EB, right side of EB, es, left side of eb, m, Sum C’, WSumC, Afr, CF, Sum T, S, Blends, CDI y DEPI). The results show that children of the study group have an avoidant style, a strong tendency to involuntary affective constraint and an aware hypercontrol of emotions; and little interest in surround themselves with emotional stimuli. Most of them have serious difficulties to cope with socio-emotional situations and about a third of the group show increased vulnerability to develop depression or another mood disorder. The content analysis is consistent with what was found quantitatively and it also shows the perception that these children have of their parental figures and their wish to live in a safer and much positive environment. Finally, the discussion is organized around three main topics: the pertinence of the instrument for this group, the analysis of the found contrasts between the participants and Exner’s data (2003) and the content analysis; and the extensions and limitations of this research.

Full textControl and stress tolerance, as well as the coping strategies used to deal with stress, have an impact on the mental and physical health of people working under very demanding conditions, such as taxi drivers (Ramírez, Hernández, Reducindo, Genchi, Mendoza & Jaimes, 2013). The aim of this investigation is to study how 29 taxi drivers of a particular company control and tolerate stress according to their coping styles. It also sought to describe the characteristics of each construct in the participants. For this purpose, both the cluster of control and stress tolerance of the Comprehensive System for the Rorschach Test and the COPE-28, the brief version of the Coping Estimation Questionnaire (COPE), by Carver, Schreier and Weintraud (1989) were used. No correlation was found between control and stress tolerance and coping styles. Regarding COPE-28`s results, it was found a preponderant use of active strategies compared to passive ones. Also, the contrast of the Rorschach results with Ráez`s data (2007) show that in the study group the D, DAdj, EA, the Sum of M and the Sum PondC are smaller; while the CDI is higher. This suggests a low control and stress tolerance in these drivers, insufficient cognitive and affective resources and difficulties in social interaction. The discussion is focused on explaining the lack of relationship found between the constructs, mentioning, among other causes, the limited variability in the results of COPE-28 and the use of measurement instruments of a very different nature. Also it is discussed the little awareness that this drivers seem to have about their own overload condition. Finally, are discussed the scope, limitation and future recommendations.

Full textThe aim was to analyze whether there are differences in the levels of stress perceived by the parents of children with chronic health problems, according to the type of locus of control (external or internal). The participants were 113 parents who have children with chronic health problems, and who voluntarily agreed to answer the prepared questionnaires and that are part of the measurement booklet, 65.5% being women and 34,5% being men. The Rotter Locus of Control scale, adapted in Peru by Brenlla and Vázquez (2010) and the Perceived Stress scale adapted in Peru by Guzmán (2016), were applied to this sample. The analysis of the data found determines that parental stress is not significantly differentiated by the type of locus of control that it possesses, but differences are reported according to the diagnosis of the child with chronic disease and by the origin of the same.

Full textThis thesis consists of 3 chapters. In Chapter I, we evaluated the induction of resistance in tomato plants grown in olive marc compost (OMC) compared to perlite, inoculated or not with Trichoderma asperellum strain T34 (T34). OMC induced the greatest control of Botrytis cinerea leaf infection (60%); followed by perlite inoculated with T34 (35%), being perlite a disease conductive substrate. The SA / ABA route was involved in the induction of systemic resistance by OMC but not by T34. OMC and perlite inoculated with T34 used as growth media increased plants growth. Some physiological parameters showed that plants grown in OMC were close to stress, suggesting a eustress situation. In Chapter II, we evaluated tomato plants root exudates and their relation with the induction of resistance in perlite inoculated with T34 against B. cinerea. Tomato plants infected with B. cinerea in leaves induced changes in the secretion pattern of root exudates, increasing gluconic acid levels and decreasing sucrose and inositol levels. T34 induced systemic resistance and reduced disease severity. Tomato plants infected with B. cinerea maintained T34 root populations, while T34 populations decreased in plants not inoculated with the pathogen. Gluconic acid (same concentration as in exudates) had a positive effect in the in vitro growth of T34. These results indicate the existence of leaf to root communication that also involves an increase in the populations of T34 and a reduction of disease severity. In Chapter III, we evaluated light and nutrient availability effect on the growth of tomato plants grown in perlite inoculated or not with T34, its effect in plants gene expression and its relation with growth improvement. T34 in the rhizosphere induced changes in the expression of 64 genes. The biological process terms response to stress, response to stimulus and proteolysis were enriched mong the 63 up-regulated genes. These changes promoted plants growth under favorable conditions (complete nutrient solution and 300-400 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD), and similarly they could be related to growth promotion at low availability of nutrients (1: 3 dilution of complete nutrient solution) at both 60-80 and 300-400 μmol m -2 s -1 PPFD.

Full textCaregivers of “Hogares Protegidos” carry out many functions that generate an impact on their mental health, especially in their affectivity, and control and tolerance to the stress. Therefore, this research aims to describe the emotional expression and the capacity for control in a group of 30 caregivers of “Hogares Protegidos” in a Peruvian province. The evaluation was performed with the Rorschach test using the comprehensive system of Exner, and with a data sheet. Also, the results obtained from the sample were compared with a comparison group of similar socio-demographic characteristics. Concerning to the affectivity cluster, variables FC and the responses to the blank space S were lower in the study group, while the variables CF, C and those representative of shading variables (FY, YF and SumY) were higher, compared to the contrast group. Concerning to the control and stress tolerance cluster, only the scores D and AdjD have a lower setting than the comparison group, obtaining both negative values. The results showed that there is a greater impact in the affective world of caregivers of Hogares protegidos, like an experience of emotions of great intensity that entail a difficulty for the regulation of their emotions and a type of emotional discharges more uncontrolled. There is evidence of strong feelings of discomfort of a situational event, without being able to be controlled. Also, they showed a difficulty to generate deliberate behaviors facing stressful situations in a particular and daily way, before which avoidant coping responses will be presented. Finally, the limitations and scope of the study are mentioned, as well as the recommendations.
