AbstractWe introduce new algorithms for computing non-termination sensitive control dependence (NTSCD) and decisive order dependence (DOD). These relations on vertices of a control flow graph have many applications including program slicing and compiler optimizations. Our algorithms are asymptotically faster than the current algorithms. We also show that the original algorithms for computing NTSCD and DOD may produce incorrect results. We implemented the new as well as fixed versions of the original algorithms for the computation of NTSCD and DOD. Experimental evaluation shows that our algorithms dramatically outperform the original ones.

AbstractDetermining upper bounds on the time complexity of a program is a fundamental problem with a variety of applications, such as performance debugging, resource certification, and compile-time optimizations. Automated techniques for cost analysis excel at bounding the resource complexity of programs that use integer values and linear arithmetic. Unfortunately, they fall short when execution traces become more involved, esp. when data dependencies may affect the termination conditions of loops. In such cases, state-of-the-art analyzers have shown to produce loose bounds, or even no bound at all.We propose a novel technique that generalizes the common notion of recurrence relations based on ranking functions. Existing methods usually unfold one loop iteration, and examine the resulting relations between variables. These relations assist in establishing a recurrence that bounds the number of loop iterations. We propose a different approach, where we derive recurrences by comparing whole traces with whole traces of a lower rank, avoiding the need to analyze the complexity of intermediate states. We offer a set of global properties, defined with respect to whole traces, that facilitate such a comparison, and show that these properties can be checked efficiently using a handful of local conditions. To this end, we adapt state squeezers, an induction mechanism previously used for verifying safety properties. We demonstrate that this technique encompasses the reasoning power of bounded unfolding, and more. We present some seemingly innocuous, yet intricate, examples where previous tools based on cost relations and control flow analysis fail to solve, and that our squeezer-powered approach succeeds.

Mobile distributed systems consisting of heterogeneous computing devices require optimal workflow decomposition. In general, the workflow partitioning is a NP-complete problem. This article presents a comparative study and detailed analysis of workflow decomposition techniques based on graphs, petri nets and topological methods. A complete taxonomy of the basic decomposition techniques is presented. A detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of these decomposition techniques are explained. The comparative analysis presented in this article provides an insight to inherent algorithmic complexities of respective decomposition approaches. The qualitative parametric analysis would help in determining the suitability of workflow applicability in different computing environments involving static and dynamic nodes. Furthermore, the authors have presented a novel framework for workflow decomposition based on multiple parametric parameters for mobile distributed systems.

In order to support legacy migration to the service-oriented architecture (SOA), this paper presents a pragmatic method that derives candidates of services from procedural programs. In the SOA, every service is supposed to be a process (procedure) with (1) open interface, (2) self-containedness, and (3) coarse granularity for business. Such services are identified from the source code and its data flow diagram (DFD), by analyzing data and control dependencies among processes. Specifically, first the DFD must be obtained with reverse-engineering techniques. For each layer of the DFD, every data flow is classified into three categories. Using the data category and control among procedures, four types of dependency are categorized. Finally, six rules are applied that aggregate mutually dependent processes and extract them as a service. A case study with a liquor shop inventory control system extracts service candidates with various granularities.

Workflows are a commonly used model to describe applications consisting of computational tasks with data or control flow dependencies. They are used in domains of bioinformatics, astronomy, physics, etc., for data-driven scientific applications. Execution of data-intensive workflow applications in a reasonable amount of time demands a high-performance computing environment. Cloud computing is a way of purchasing computing resources on demand through virtualization technologies. It provides the infrastructure to build and run workflow applications, which is called ‘Infrastructure as a Service.' However, it is necessary to schedule workflows on cloud in a way that reduces the cost of leasing resources. Scheduling tasks on resources is a NP hard problem and using meta-heuristic algorithms is an obvious choice for the same. This chapter presents application of nature-inspired algorithms: particle swarm optimization, shuffled frog leaping algorithm and grey wolf optimization algorithm to the workflow scheduling problem on the cloud. Simulation results prove the efficacy of the suggested algorithms.

The term ‘overtourism’ made the headlines in 2017 to denote the antithesis of a fair, well-planned form of tourism. An overtourism destination is a destination perceived as the victim of uncontrolled flows of tourists. Some authors have contributed to analysing the first stages of this perception. Boissevain (1996) published ‘Coping with tourists: European reactions to mass tourism’, in which he analysed how a massive flow of tourists in Malta generated negative side effects and a total dependence on touristic economy. Tyler et al. (1998) offered one of the first analyses of ways to control tourism flow from a sustainable point of view. Bosselman et al. (1999) published a pioneering analysis on the relationships between hosts and tourists. The paper discusses the risks and benefits of growth in tourism and the need for long-term management to avoid overexploitation of tourist destinations. These research projects laid the foundations for reflection on sustainable tourism and were the starting point for studying the risks of overtourism. Fyall and Garrod (1998) discussed the impacts of overtourism on heritage sites. On the one hand, the phenomenon contributes to a short-term economic boost; on the other hand, it impacts negatively on the way of life of local communities.

The foregoing chapters detail the many technical innovations in water supply, distribution, and management for several Old World, New World, and South- East Asian societies. For most of the New World’s societies, basic water resource problems evolved around securing their agricultural base given the unique environmental and water resource conditions prevalent in their locations. Diverse New World societies occupying different environment niches from dry coastal margins to wet highlands, often subject to vastly different average temperatures, crop types, and water variation cycles, were shown to devise different approaches to the development of their agricultural bases. While rainfall runoff from mountain watersheds sourced the many rivers of coastal Peruvian valleys and provided the basis for canal irrigation, excessive rainfall and cold in Andean highland locations allowed groundwater-based farming using raised Welds that had thermodynamic advantages based on conservation of the sun’s heat to prevent root crop destruction during freezing nights. The presence of varying climate cycles (excessive rainfall and drought) was seen to influence modifications in coastal canal systems. Alterations in canal size and placement to accommodate reduced-water supplies were evident in intravalley coastal systems where modifications were relatively straightforward in sandy environments. Intervalley water transfers through massive canal systems were a further characteristic of a flexible response to maintain the water resource base and this often involved the transfer of river water from one valley to another depending on agricultural, economic, and political priorities. With increased need for more agricultural lands to meet population demands, increasingly lower slope canals were surveyed to include further downslope lands. Here technical innovation was a key factor in providing surveying expertise to maintain low-slope contour canals. While such canals are found at very early Formative and Preceramic sites, surveying techniques became more refined in time to permit greater use of land areas reachable by low-slope canals. Here both Old and New World societies share their dependence on surveying technology to meet water transfer demands. While Roman surveying favoured the most direct aqueduct routing necessitating long, linear aqueduct structures interspersed with siphons and multitier aqueducts structures where appropriate, New World surveying was different in that canal designs following landscape contours were prevalent and, in some cases, optimized to produce specific and/or maximum flow rate designs. Specific measures to create hydraulic control structures to defend against El Niño destruction are evident in the New World archaeological record indicating an active, innovative engineering response to climate and weather-induced disasters, probably based on the memory of prior destructive events.

To control the formation process of polymer thin films from polymer solution droplets using inkjet printings, internal flows of the droplets on substrates are studied.
