Full textThe work presented in this document is related to the research theme of car aerodynamic. Although at the present time the automobile industry is mainly looking at the drag reduction of a vehicle, there are other research areas in automotive aerodynamic. One of them is aeroacoustics, the study of the aerodynamic phenomena that can lead directly or indirectly to acoustic disturbances, ie noise. In this thesis, the aeroacoustic of the A-pillar (the part situated between the windscreen and side window) was experimentally studied in a wind tunnel and on a track, by PIV measurements, pressure sensor, hot wire, etc. In a second phase, passive control techniques have been studied in a wind tunnel, and prototypes were made to be tested on a road vehicle

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to the understanding of the vortical flow in connection with the non-linear aerodynamic behavior of the UCAV SACCON configuration, 53° sweep angle with spanwise variation of leading-edge. Experimental wind tunnel tests were performed on a model to characterize the complex vortical flow field causes the pitch down/up and roll/yawing instabilities due to its asymmetric occurrence. Unsteady vortical substructures emanating from the leading edge and convected in the mixing layer were detected by criterion in stereoscopic PIV measurements. Comparison of these measurements with numerical investigations reveals that simulations predict the overall behavior of the aircraft. The second part of the work has been devoted to increase aerodynamic performances of the UCAV by means of some control strategies. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations confirmed that the implementation of flow control devices at leading edge changed the topology of vortical flow field and contributed to improve the behavior of the UCAV

Full textThe impingement of a flow upon a wall results in a sound that industrials want to remove because the level of acoustic energy, although it represents only a weak part of the total energy, may affect the material integrity or cause a prejudicial noise pollution. In particular, suppression of the low frequency narrow-band sound (discrete tones) of high amplitude produced by the flow over a cavity is an important challenge, as shown y the numerous studies dedicated to this subject over the last six decades. This study aims at controlling or suppressing the self-sustained oscillations responsible for the generation of acoustic waves in this flow. However, despite the apparent simplicity of the phenomena, knowledge of the physical mechanisms involved remains limites, making the control approach still difficult to carry out. As control is dependent on the knowledge of the physics of the flow, the influence of the upstream conditions in highly subsonic flows as been investigated. A local aspiration of the boundary layer is carried out by a narrow split upstream of the cavity. Unsteady pressure measurements show that, over the range of parameters under consideration, the diminution of the boundary layer thickness does not induce any significant change in the flow

Full textDeep cavities are present in many industrial processes. The aero-acoustic coupling and the high increase in the skin friction coefficient downstream from the cavity results in resonance of high pressure level as well as strong vibration and structural fatigue. The present experimental investigation shows the effect of a deep cavity on a turbulent boundary layer. A control device using spanwise cylinder is conducted. LDV measurements, conducted in a water tunnel, evidenced that the skin friction coefficient increases downstream from the cavity. With same flow conditions, drag increase is lower for deep cavities than for shallow ones studied in the literature. The high values of skewness and flatness coefficients are related to intermittent ejections of flow from the downstream part of the cavity. This hypothesis was confirmed thanks to PIV measurements. Pressure measurements are conducted in two large deep cavity configurations (L/H = 0. 2 et 0. 41) in a large wind tunnel. Oscillations of discrete frequencies are produced inside the cavity when the free-stream velocity becomes higher than a minimum value which depends on the cavity length L. The hydrodynamic mode of the cavity shear layer is well predicted by the Rossiter model the convection velocity is measured and when the empirical time delay is neglected. Time-resolved PIV measurements show that for L/H = 0. 2 and U₀ = 43 m/s only one vortical structure is formed at the cavity leading edge. This vortex grows while convecting downstream along the shear layer. A cylinder placed spanwisely near the cavity leading edge removes the resonance and highly modifies the behavior of the shear layer flow. Reductions in sound pressure levels (SPL) of up to 36 dB is obtained for optimal position of 1. 67 diameter of the cylinder from the wall. Moreover, a shaped cylinder was also studied and shows that the attenuation of tones is not due to high frequency pulsing as suggested in literature, but to higher stability of the shear layer due to the change in the mean axial velocity profiles and the increase in the shear layer thickness

Full textThis work is devoted to the characterization of the dynamic inside an open cavity flow, for which few experimental studies exist. A control of the flow has been also investigated. We have performed a parametric study of the first and second regime of the flow for which Taylor-Görtler vortices type appear. Bifurcation thresholds have been identified and their systematic supercritical nature has been highlighted. We have also showed that different family of propagating or stationary modes can be selected depending on the geometry of the cavity. This has confirmed predictions obtained by linear stability analysis of the base flow in the literature. We have showed that the second regime results from the superposition of left and right propagating waves. We attended to identify coefficients of the complex coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations that describe the dynamics but the values of the coefficients are sensitive to multiple parameters. A control of oscillations of the shear layer has been achieved by the mean of a plasma actuator with dielectric barrier discharge located upstream of the cavity. Locked regimes have been identified by the analysis of the flow response to a periodic perturbation with different amplitude. Finally, we have performed a closed loop control of the oscillations of the shear layer using a delay feedback control law proposed by Pyragas in the context of chaotic dynamical systems

Full textThis study aims at providing a detailed description of the tip-leakage flow, in order to analyzeits sensitivity to design parameters and to control devices based on air injection from the casing. The setup iscomposed of a single blade, set orthogonal to a flat plate that plays the role of the casing wall. The analysis isbased on experiments conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel that are complemented by CFD calculations. Thetip-leakage flow is primarily driven by the gap height. The incoming boundary layer thickness and the bladeloading also have a notable effect on the lateral position of the tip-leakage vortex. The distribution of local entropycreation rate has been used to identify areas of losses in the flow. Moreover, the total pressure losses have beendecomposed in two terms identified as a vortex loss and a wake loss. This vortex loss drives the increase of totalpressure losses with the gap height. An empirical model has been developped to predict the evolution of thetip-leakage vortex circulation and of the total pressure losses with respect to the gap height. A steady injection ofair from the casing has been evaluated, using normal jets in the gap. With this control strategy, the tip-leakagevortex tends to be closer to the blade, which could lead to an extension of the range of stable operation for axialcompressors. In addition to that, the control device smoothes out the axial vorticity field in the tip-leakage vortex, which could be interesting to reduce rotor-stator interactions. However, this control strategy leads to higher totalpressure losses and is less effective with larger gaps

Full textTo be efficient, strategies aiming at reducing automotive vehicles aerodynamic drag have to be based on an increased knowledge of the physical phenomena present in the flow around the vehicle. This experimental work intends to contribute to the understanding of these phenomena by focusing on the flow around a generic vehicle model, the Ahmed body. This flow is characterized by the development of a recirculation bubble surrounded by two longitudinal vortex structures in the immediate neighborhood of the model rear window. At first, this flow is studied by polarographic method in a water tunnel, this method permits the unsteady wall shear stress measurement. This physical quantity is particularly sensitive to the presence of coherent structures in the near-wall region. By the use of different analysis methods, we highlight the presence of marked unsteadinesses in the flow strongly participating in the complex dynamics of the vortex structures. A flow control using a deflector is then studied. The increase in the separated bubble on the rear window by the device allows, under certain conditions, a drag reduction of about 9%. We focus on the understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in this modification of the aerodynamic stresses, in particular by characterizing the influence of the control on the flow topology. The modification of the balance existing between the separated zone on the window and the longitudinal vortex structures developing at its contact allows the decrease in their contribution to the aerodynamic drag. We show that the increase imposed in the recirculation bubbles allows the weakening, then the destruction, of the longitudinal vortices. This study shows that it is necessary to take all the vortex structures into account around this kind of three-dimensional configuration in order to design more efficient flow control strategies

Full textNowadays, the manufacture of turbomachinery is conditioned by more and more restrictive rules. The industrial challenge for researchers has to consider optimal solutions to reduce sources of energy loss, instability and noise, particularly the tip clearance flow (leakage flow rate). Preliminary actions have been developed at Arts & ParisTech on rotational molding process used for the automobile cooling axial fan. The idea of this work is to use the hollow shape induced by rotational molding process in order to exploit it in the control of tip clearance flow through rotary steady air injection. For this, the shroud ring is composed of injection holes oriented in such away to reduce both of leakage flow rate and the torque. In this work, the thesis focuses on three parts. The first concerns the build of the fan by rotational molding process. The second concerns the experimental study carried out in the ISO 5801 test bench. This study involves the realization of drive system dedicated to rotary steady air injection, metrology for performance determination and the characterization of the near wake axial velocity. The third part deals with the numerical modeling of efficient experimental conditions, then the extrapolation of work towards high injection rates. For this latter, it is possible to cancel leakage flow rate with a considerable gain of the torque thus putting the fan in autorotation

Full textThe present work aims to pre-evaluate flow control parameters to reduce the drag in a real vehicle. Two different actuation mechanisms (Murata’s micro-blower, and air-knives) are characterized and compared to define their advantages and limitations. Murata micro-blowers energized the boundary layer to directly perturb the vortex structures formed in the shear layer region. The air-knife has a rounded surface, adjacent to the slit exit, that could be considered as an active boat-tail (Coanda effect) for drag reduction. Different open-loop and closed-loop control strategies are examined, such as continuous blowing, periodic forcing, sliding mode control (SMC) and machine learning control (MLC). SMC is a robust closed-loop algorithm to track, reach and maintain a predefined set-point; this approach has on-line adaptivity in changing conditions. Machine learning control is a model-free control that learns an effective control law that is judged and optimized with respect to a problem-specific cost/objective function. A hybrid between MLC and SMC may provide adaptive control exploiting the best non-linear actuation mechanisms. Finally, all these parameters are brought together and tested in real experimental applications representative of the mean wake and shear-layer structures related to control of real cars. For the backward-facing step, the goal is to experimentally reduce the recirculation zone. The flow is manipulated by a row of micro-blowers and sensed by pressure sensors. Initial measurements were carried out varying the periodic forcing. MLC is used to improve performance optimizing a control law with respect to a cost function. MLC is shown to outperform periodic forcing. For the Ahmed body, the goal is to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the square-back Ahmed body. The flow is manipulated by an air-knife placed on the top trailing edge and sensed by a force balance. Continuous blowing and periodic forcing are used as open-loop strategies. SMC and MLC algorithms are applied and compared to the open-loop cases. The pre-evaluation of the flow control parameters yielded important information to reduce the drag of a car. The first real vehicle experiments were performed on a race track. The first actuator device concept and sensor mechanism are presented

Full textThe simultaneous use of an alternating electromagnetic field and a continuous magnetic field is a new device to control the meniscus in steel continuous casting and to improve the slabs quality. Two complementary studies are performed to understand magneto-hydrodynamic phenomena. An experimental model is built and equipped with the two processes to characterize the mean shape and fluctuations of the free surface of the pool. A measurement of liquid metal level in electromagnetic environment is developed. The measures show that fluctuations rise up with electromagnetic alternative field. The superimposition of continuous magnetic field effectively damps the background noise and natural modes of the casting mold, whereas it significantly amplify low frequency fluctuations linked to a jet oscillation phenomenon. A three dimensional numerical model of coupled phenomena is undertaken to make a theoretical study of the alternative electromagnetic field device. A magneto hydrostatic and a magneto hydrodynamic model are developed to determine the fluid flow taking the free surface shape into account. The model is validated with experimental measurements. It points out the importance of the free surface electromagnetic stirring computation. It also shows an unexpected fluid flow due to the presence of edges. In the near future, this numerical model will be use to guide the industrial device building

Full textActive flow control is currently studied in order to improve aerial or ground vehicle aerodynamics. Diminishing aerodynamic drag leads to a reduction of fuel consumption and so in greenhouse gas emissions of vehicles. Fluidic actuators have been used as control devices for about fifteen years. Considering the fact that the actuator does not need external fluid supply system, synthetic jet control seems to be the most suitable solution that can fit on production vehicles. This thesis combines experimental tests and numerical simulations. It tackles with the flow control around a square back Ahmed body with synthetic jet actuator. Wind tunnel tests have essentially been used to characterize the flow around and in the wake of the Ahmed body. Flow around this simplified geometry of ground vehicle has been characterized using hot wire anemometry, flush mounted pressure taps and two components Particular Image Velocimetry. The steady and unsteady features of the wake flow have thus been characterized. Simulations of this flow have been performed with the computation code elsA. Results of the simulations of the natural flow around the square back Ahmed body have been compared to experimental results. With a view to modifying the drag, flow control thanks to a synthetic jet actuator has been tested on a square back Ahmed body. Parameters of the flow control, such as momentum coefficient, actuation frequency and orientation of the synthetic jet have been numerically investigated. Results show a decrease of the circulation length leading to a diminution of the base pressure and hence to an increase of the drag. Flow control by using a low frequency with slots oriented along the mainstream seems to be a path to explore

Full textThis work studies the laminar-turbulent transition and the pitch control effects on the performances of a vertical axis tidal turbine (SHIVA) developed at the French naval academy research institute. Firstly, experimental and numerical results are compared to study the transitional flow around a hydrofoil. The experiments were carried out in the hydrodynamic tunnel of the French naval academy research institute and the laminar-turbulent transition was triggered by a laminar separation bubble mechanism. Comparisons are based on the local analysis of pressure data and velocity profiles in the vicinity of the laminar separation bubble. Lift, drag and moment coefficients measured on a fixed hydrofoil and on a hydrofoil undergoing a pitching movement are also used for comparison. 2D RANS calculations carried out with or without a transition modal (ɣ — Reo), 3D RANS calculations and 2.5D LES calculations were run so as to assess the accuracy of each type of simulation. This study shows that the ‘y Reo transition modal clearly improves the accuracy of the results compared to a fully turbulent turbulence model (k— w SST) when considering a transitional flow. The influence of the laminar-turbulent transition on the performance of the SHIVA turbine is then studied. Results of 2D calculations run with and without transition model are compared. The use of the transition modal is relevant at the tip speed ratio value ʎ = 2 for which the blades undergo dynamic stall. The transition modal leads to a better prediction of the leading edge vortex development and then allows a better prediction of the dynamic stall. The use of the transition model at higher ʎ values is less relevant since the transition modal appears to predict a drag too low. Finally, the effect of the pitch control on the SHIVA turbine performance is .studied at ʎ = 3, for which the power coefficient is the highest. Advanced pitching laws are developed to modify the blades’ angle of attack independently on the upstream and downstream halves of the turbine. The best pitching law tested in this study leads to an improvement of the power coefficient by 34% and smooths the torque distribution

Full textOver the past decades, the aviation sector has continuously grown, and the number of passengers carried has increased considerably. At the same time, increasingly restrictive policies have been put in place to reduce our environmental impact, especially by reducing CO2 emissions. In this context, engine manufacturers try to design more efficient engines, leading to the use of operating points closer to the stability limits and to higher loading of the compressor stages. However, these regions are more sensitive to the onset of rotating stall, and manufacturers seek to avoid them by using large security margins. Two major problems must therefore be addressed, extending the operating range of the compressor by moving its stability limit and being able to know precisely the position of its operating point to reduce the security margin. Moreover, even if the phenomenon of rotating stall is now globally well understood, recent studies have highlighted new onset mechanisms. Thus, in order to correctly handle the two main challenges cited before, it is necessary to improve our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of the phenomenon inception. This PhD thesis follows this approach by proposing a study of the rotating stall onset, and then the development and analysis of a surveillance and active flow control system, using continuous or pulsed jets, which aims at warning of the approach of sensitive areas and expanding the operating range of the compressor by preventing the onset of stall

Full textWe present a new microwave probing technique which aims to monitor the variation of the soil water content at the depth of the crop roots. The dielectric permittivity plays a key role in this technique. Indeed, it is directly related to the soil water content and numerous models are formed to reveal their relationship. Meanwhile, it determines the interactions between the medium and the electromagnetic field which are governed by the Helmholtz equation. Besides, recovering the permittivity profile of the medium from the electromagnetic field is an inverse scattering problem. Therefore, one can access the map of water content in soil by solving an inverse scattering problem. A circular scanner which is designed for studying the 2D problem is employed to send and receiver back the electromagnetic signal which interacts with a soil column placed inside its cavity. The direct propagation problem corresponding to this configuration is formulated and solved with the FEM method. It serves to calibrate the imaging system and to generate the simulated data which will be useful to test the inversion methods discussed during this PhD work. In order to reduce the ill-posedness of the inverse scattering problem, we studied both qualitative imaging methods and quantitative ones. The support information of the scatterers provided by the qualitative methods may be of interest when used as an initial guess in the quantitative methods which can retrieve the refractive index of the medium. Three qualitative methods are studied, the DORT (Decomposition of the time reversal operator) method, the MUSIC (MUltiple-Signal-classification) method and the LSM (Linear sampling method) method. We also proposed the EDORT method which can cope with extended-size targets. Two quantitative methods based on the CG (Conjugate Gradient) minimization scheme are provided. The first one does not use any a priori information. The second one use some shape a priori information which is introduced into the inversion scheme by means of a modified Heaviside function coupled with a level set formalism. In order to test the ability of these inversion methods to monitor the variation of the soil water content, we simulate the water diffusive process in a soil column by solving the Richards equation and couple these simulations with the FEM software, and then the ‘measured’ fields with respect to time are obtained. The LSM method and the two quantitative methods are tested with this synthetic data. Besides, a controlled water diffusive process which occurs in a soil column was experimentally realized. The associated electromagnetic fields were measured using the circular scanner. The imaging results of the LSM method on the experimental data are also presented
