Abstract:
“Who Owns the Religion of Haiti?” demonstrates how a futile religious ‘war’ has been waged in pursuit of control over elusive doctrinal boundaries and dubious doctrinal fidelity in a persistently fluid, plural religious landscape. Since 1860, the Vatican and French Catholic Church have waged crusades to conquer the cultural life of the nation and retake control of Haitian Catholicism. A century later, Protestant missionaries from the United States embarked on their own campaigns to accumulate converts in the Haitian countryside. During twentieth century ‘anti-superstition’ campaigns against vodou, and more recent post-earthquake iterations of anti-vodou campaigns, there has been a constant battle waged in Haiti over religion. Throughout, Haitians utilize diffuse, localized, and family-based features to provide a measure of immunity to the colonizing designs of religious crusaders.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes literary depictions of sexual policing from two periods of historical transition—the late 1930s and early 1940s in Haiti and the U.S. South—in the works of Marie Vieux-Chauvet and William Faulkner. The policing of sexuality portrayed in the novels allowed the beneficiaries of colonialism, the plantocracy in the U.S. South, and the mulâtres-aristocrates in Haiti to control the intersection of race and sexuality and to preserve colonial hierarchies in post-/neo-colonial societies as adherence to them began to wane. However, through the depiction of consensual interracial relationships and same-sex friendships, the novels also hint at other options: alternatives to the replication of destructive colonial hierarchies. By including these examples of resistance, Faulkner and Vieux-Chauvet confront, rather than passively reinscribe, colonial relations in the post-/neo-colonial era.

Conceived as a companion to Chapter 3, this chapter also examines movement in public spaces in two creole cities, but this time emphasizing an approach grounded in ethnography and focusing upon two relatively contemporary dance-based social communities: the rará performers of Port-au-Prince in Haiti, and the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans. It finds well-known historical and ethnographic parallels between these two social organizations within their respective urban-Caribbean contexts but also teases out more sophisticated and less familiar understandings of raráistes’ and Indians’ political intentionality--the parallel ways in which their costume, movement, and sound enables temporary, but potent, subaltern resistance to dominant culture’s control of public spaces.

Abstract:
This chapter provides quantitative data analysis and case studies of electoral-violence prevention techniques. Implicit in the academic study of electoral violence is the assumption that it is a problem to be addressed by programs specifically designed to reduce conflict. It is thus necessary in any comprehensive account of this phenomenon to devote careful consideration to the strategies that have been employed to mitigate electoral violence. In quantitative analysis, the chapter finds that electoral governance matters more than formal institutional design in efforts to contain electoral violence. Macedonia and Haiti are the focus of case studies that serve to deepen the understanding of these patterns, demonstrating the importance of electoral-authority capacity and political will in enabling effective violence control strategies.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the three largest and only independent nations of the Caribbean at the turn of the twentieth century – Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic – and their vulnerability to and struggles with a new overseas power in the region, the United States. At the time, hard-earned forms of popular land access and their defence against expanding U.S. plantations and local land owners by armed rural bands and others impeded the development of central state control over rural populations and economies, control sought by both local elites and the U.S. government and corporations. This peasant autonomy and resistance, and what U.S. leaders perceived as overall failed central states in their “backyard,” shaped long and repeated U.S. military occupations of these countries. Resistance to U.S. rule was fierce, widespread, and armed, but the U.S. military withdrew only after it established powerful national militaries and effective central states expected to be dutiful to U.S. interests. These militaries were crucial to the post-occupation rise of some of the most ruthless and long-lasting dictators in Caribbean history.
