Abstract:
This chapter deals with the difficult ethical issues associated with children who are dying. A recurring theme in the chapter is the role that children can play in planning their own care. The concept of brain death is examined and it is contrasted with cardiac death. The practice of organ donation after cardiac death is described and its ethical justification is questioned. . Several other controversial ethical issues are analyzed, including the distinction between withholding and withdrawing of treatment, withdrawing medically provided hydration and nutrition from infants who are not in the

When it comes to any current scientific debate, there are more than two sides to every story. Controversies in Science and Technology, Volume 4 analyzes controversial topics in science and technology-infrastructure, ecosystem management, food security, and plastics and health-from multiple points of view. The editors have compiled thought-provoking essays from a variety of experts from academia and beyond, creating a volume that addresses many of the issues surrounding these scientific debates. Part I of the volume discusses infrastructure, and the real meaning behind the term in today's socie

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the controversial issue of personality disorder, whether these are meaningful diagnoses and, if so, how they affect management. The classification is entirely pragmatic: the definitions and classification in both ICD-10 and DSM-V are outlined along with proposals to abandon categories in favour of a dimensional approach. The issue of treatability is explored, but we conclude that ignoring personality and personality disorders is not a viable alternative for outreach workers. Most of the chapter deals with the management of dissocial personality disorder (usually in men)

Discussions of science and values in risk management have largely focused on how values enter into arguments about risks, that is, issues of acceptable risk. Instead this volume concentrates on how values enter into collecting, interpreting, communicating, and evaluating the evidence of risks, that is, issues of the acceptability of evidence of risk. By focusing on acceptable evidence, this volume avoids two barriers to progress. One barrier assumes that evidence of risk is largely a matter of objective scientific data and therefore uncontroversial. The other assumes that evidence of risk, bei

This book charts the history of the water catchments and water supply for the city of Melbourne, which has many unique aspects that are a critical part of the history of Melbourne, Victoria and Australia. Much of the development of the water supply system was many decades ahead of its time and helped buffer the city of Melbourne from major diseases, droughts and water shortages.

The authors present a chronology of the evolution of the catchment and water supply system pre-1900 to today. They discuss major developments, policies, and construction and management activities. Each cha

Diagnosis and treatment may vary in multiple ways, given the context and characteristics of jails and prisons. Reassessment of symptomatology at every visit, especially in the first few months of incarceration, enhances accurate diagnosis. The clinical presentation of many individuals at the time of incarceration is frequently confounded by substance withdrawal, adjustment issues, and other comorbidities. The practice of intensive care medicine raises multiple legal and ethical issues on a daily basis, making it increasingly difficult to know whom to admit and when, at what stage invasive management should be withdrawn, and who, importantly, should decide? These profound dilemmas, already complicated in a setting of scarce resources, mandate an understanding of law and ethics for those working in intensive care medicine. Clinically focused, the book explains the relevance of landmark rulings to aid the day-to-day decision making of critical care professionals. A spectrum of ethical and legal co

Choice Matters: How Healthcare Consumers Make Decisions (and Why Clinicians and Managers Should Care) is a timely and thoughtful exploration of the controversial role of consumers in the U.S. healthcare system. In most markets today, consumers have more options and autonomy than ever before. Empowered consumers easily shop around for products and services that better meet their needs, and they widely share their reviews on social media to inform and influence other consumers. Businesses have responded with better experiences and prices to compete for consumers’ business. Though healthcare has

Human activities have taken place in the world's oceans and seas for most of human history. With such a vast number of ways in which the oceans can be used for trade, exploited for natural resources and fishing, as well as concerns over maritime security, the legal systems regulating the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans have long been a crucial part of international law. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea comprehensively defined the parameters of the law of the sea in 1982, and since the Convention was concluded it has seen considerable
