Abstract:
Following the Reformation, Catholic families seeking to educate both sons and daughters in their faith faced many challenges. The penal laws proscribed the creation of Catholic schools in England and forbade parents to send children abroad for education. However, such was the determination to provide Catholic schooling that families were prepared to break the laws and meet the expense of fees and travel. The convents established schools for several reasons. For some orders it was part of their religious purpose to educate girls, others saw it as a means of educating future members, and all nee

This article draws on primary source materials to discuss the transnational spaces of nineteenth-century convent schools, which were founded and built by religious women (nuns). The article argues that it is necessary to study the teaching Sisters and their convent schools in order to glean insight into the transnational mobility of the teaching Sisters, and the exchange of ideas between women in education spaces. Equally, gendered readings of the convent as an education space are needed. This article attempts to contribute towards starting a discussion around the nineteenth-century convent sc

In several European countries former pupils of Catholic nuns have made accusations of physical and emotional abuse. Feminist scholars have tended to perceive nuns as heroines because of their authority and their contribution to raising the social status of women. But there is also a darker side to convent education. Committees established by national governments have identified systemic factors leading to abuse in educational institutions. Abstract:
Abstract Real world learning and the internationalisation of curricula are relatively new considerations in contemporary higher education discourses. Inquiry and application lie at the heart of real world learning, and the internationalisation of academic programmes is expected to equip learners with diverse learning styles and global citizenship skills. However, combining these two sets of educational objectives for pedagogic success is challenging, mainly because of learners’ academic, social and cultural differences. The chapter addresses this problem theoretically and with the help of three real cases drawn from the UK and Bangladesh. The cases convey the ethos and procedures for accommodating diversity, inquiry, application of learning, and cross-cultural collaboration in international educational settings. The findings suggest several practical guidelines on creating authentic and long-term learning opportunities in higher education.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the importance of women’s education and Latinity to the first chronicler of St Monica’s, who composed anonymously, but whom I have identified as Mary Copley, a descendant of Sir Thomas More. Copley was well-educated, and descended from a long line of well-educated men and women whose learning, she believed, was critical to the survival and flourishing of English Catholicism after the Reformation. Copley’s attention to More’s legacy at St Monica’s is more sustained than would have been possible had she written under her own name. Writing anonymously, she subsumes her concerns into the stories and voices of the other women and their family members who are represented in this significant early modern chronicle. Copley’s is the first of four detailed case studies of what I call ‘subsumed autobiography’: when an anonymous author, through the very vehicle of her anonymity, shapes a text around her own experiences, politics, theology or ideology to such a degree that the work can be read as an expression and exploration of the author’s selfhood. The case of Copley’s authorship rests on combined analyses of prosopographical, manuscript, and textual data, and provides a methodology for identifying anonymous authors.

Teresa de Ávila had hoped that María de San José (1548–1603) would succeed her as foundress of convents and head of the Carmelite reform. However, María clashed with the Discalced hierarchy when the Provincial, Nicolás Doria, sought to modify the Constitutions of the order. She and Ana de Jesús appealed to the Pope in what came to be known as the “nuns’ revolt”, but, in the end, Doria won out. María was imprisoned and eventually exiled to a remote convent, where she soon died. María had received an excellent education as a child at the palace of Duchess Luisa de la Cerda, and she wrote many well-reasoned, legalistic letters defending her position.
