The article is based on the case study of Sr Asklipiodata, a Jewish convert to Christianity, who became a member of the monastic community in one of Kiev's Orthodox convents in the second half of the eighteenth century. It explores the ways in which the non-communal way of life in Eastern Orthodox convents impacted both upon the praxis of monastic existence within the convent walls, and relations with the secular world without. Parallel to this consideration of a lasting centrality of property ownership in Orthodox female monasticism, the article addresses the largely neglected question of Jew

Using the example of the Bohemian Franciscan Province, and its Olomouc convent in particular, this paper analyses mendicancy after the Reformation. In the early modern period mendicancy remained an important practice in the Franciscan Order. Apart from its economic function, begging was also an important means of interaction between the friars and the people. It was a complicated exchange of goods and services, which helped the friars to secure their position in society and export elements of their spirituality outside the walls of their convents.

England's Catholic religious minority devised various strategies for its survival in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including the establishment of seminaries and convents in continental Europe, predominantly in France and the Spanish Netherlands. In 1677, the priest Bernardo Martín de Fleitas obtained permission to found a chapel in the cloister of the convent of San Diego del Monte, outside the walls of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. He endowed it splendidly and not long afterwards gave it to the Counts of Valle de Salazar. The chapel was abandoned until the second count revitalised it and changed its dedication. Many problems in fluid mechanics and material sciences deal with liquid-vapour flows. In these flows, the ideal gas assumption is not accurate and the van der Waals equation of state is usually used. This equation of state is non-convex and causes the solution domain to have two hyperbolic regions separated by an elliptic region. Therefore, the governing equations of these flows have a mixed elliptic-hyperbolic nature. Numerical oscillations usually appear with standard finite-difference space discretization schemes, and they persist when the order of accuracy of the semi-discrete scheme is i

Abstract Premature failures in copper potable water systems are often a direct result of the workmanship practices that were used when the systems were installed. One of the workmanship practices that can lead to accelerated corrosion of copper piping systems, particularly those that are used to convey cold water, is the use of excessive soldering flux. A technique for mitigating this problem has been developed which involves flushing the affected system with hot water (150 to 170°F) at a high velocity. This removes soldering flux residue that may still be inside the copper tubes and fittings.

The design of a three-dimensional non-axisymmetric end-wall is carried out using three-dimensional numerical simulations. The computations have been conducted both for the flat and contoured end-walls. The performance of the end-wall is evaluated by comparing the heat transfer and total pressure loss reduction. The contouring is done in such a way to have convex curvature in the pressure side and concave surface in the suction side. The convex surface increases the velocity by reducing the local static pressure while concave surface decreases the velocity by increasing the local pressure. The

Results of detailed heat transfer measurements are presented for all four walls of a 180° 1:1 aspect ratio duct. Experiments using a transient heat transfer technique with liquid crystal thermography were conducted for turbulent flow over a Reynolds numbers range of 12,500–50,000. Computational results using a Navier-Stokes code are also presented to complement the experiments. Two near-wall shear-stress treatments (wall functions and the two layer wall integration method) were evaluated in conjunction with k-ε formulation of turbulence to assess their ability to predict high local gradients i

Abstract In carbon anode baking furnaces, temperature and quality of carbon anodes are significantly affected by the deformation of the flue-walls, where the flue-gases flow and combustion occur. Flue-walls aging gives rise to non-homogeneous baking of the carbon anodes and results in deterioration of the anode quality, which eventually causes instabilities in aluminum reduction cells and overconsumption of anodes and energy. It is imperative to develop a fully coupled 3D multi-physics computational model which takes into account a large number of physical phenomena that play vital roles in th

Unusual damage was experienced by the first stage nozzles in a gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator. (Nozzles are stationary vanes that channel hot gases to the rotating blades in the turbine). All pressure (concave) walls of the vanes experienced some degree of damage, least of which were cracking of the coating, erosion and wall thinning. About 30% of the vanes were damaged more severely. They experienced pitting, erosion, cracking and total disintegration of up to half of the pressure walls. The suction walls (convex) of the vanes showed very little damage and all leading edges w

Abstract:
Investigations of recent firefighter line of duty deaths caused by rapid fire progression have highlighted a deficiency in firefighters’ understanding of how certain tactics affect the fire dynamics of ventilation-controlled fires. Many fires are in a ventilation-limited, decay state by the time firefighters arrive at the scene, meaning that introducing additional ventilation to the environment has the potential to cause rapid and intense fire growth. To more effectively teach firefighters about the potential effects of ventilation on a compartment fire, ventilation-controlled fires should be

There is a need for renewable antimicrobial surface treatments that are semi- permanent, can eradicate both biofilms and planktonic pathogens over long periods of time and that do not select for resistant strains. This proposal describes a dopamine binding technology that is inexpensive, bio-friendly, non-toxic, and uses straight-forward commercially available products. The antimicrobial agents are peptidoglycanhydrolase enzymes that are non-toxic and highly refractory to resistance development. The goal of this project is to create a treatment that will be applicable to a wide variety of surf
