SUMMARYIn March 2002, an outbreak ofSalmonellaEnteritidis (SE) infections occurred at a convention centre in Dallas, Texas and continued for 6 weeks. We conducted epidemiological studies, obtained clinical and environmental cultures, and interviewed employees to identify risk factors for infection. From 17 March–25 April 2002, the implicated hotel kitchen catered 41 multi-day conferences attended by 9790 persons. We received 617 illness reports from residents of 46 states. Sauces or items served with sauces were implicated in three cohort studies. SE phage-type 8 was identified as the agent. E

AbstractThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has greatly impacted health-care systems worldwide, leading to an unprecedented rise in demand for health-care resources. In anticipation of an acute strain on established medical facilities in Dallas, Texas, federal officials worked in conjunction with local medical personnel to convert a convention center into a Federal Medical Station capable of caring for patients affected by COVID-19. A 200,000 square foot event space was designated as a direct patient care area, with surrounding spaces repurposed to house ancillary services. Given the highl

Abstract Background The record rainfall following Hurricane Harvey’s landfall along the Texas coast on August 25, 2017 caused prolonged, widespread flooding, which devastated Houston and areas along the southern Gulf Coast. With shelters in Houston at capacity, residents from adjacent affected regions were evacuated elsewhere, and Dallas received over 3,800 evacuees at a single convention center shelter. Approaches to infectious disease surveillance and prevention in this mega-shelter setting were assessed and refined during the response. Methods Teams of epidemiologists and medical students r

Background: In the setting of global warming, natural disasters are increasing in pace and scope. Although natural disasters themselves do not cause outbreaks, the breakdowns in sanitary infrastructure and the displacement of populations, often to crowded shelters, have caused outbreaks. Abstract:
One of the signature Baptist theological convictions is religious freedom, considered by many to rest at the heart of genuine Baptist life and faith. Beginning with Thomas Helwys's A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity (1612), Baptists have held that religious faith should be freely embraced and not coerced. In the twentieth century, many names come to mind regarding Baptist advocacy for this principle, but George W. Truett (1867-1944) has been hailed as perhaps its most prominent voice. Indeed, along with J.M. Dawson and James M. Dunn, Truett, who spent his entire career as a pastor

This article investigates the ways that Ti West’s X horror film series uses the premise of pre-Internet American porno filmmaking as a grimy yet cool marker of American independent cinematic authenticity. The trilogy – composed of X (2022), Pearl (2022), and MaXXXine (2024) – uses the slasher horror genre to examine the porn industry and the history of twentieth-century cinema, with a particular focus on the so-called “golden age” (1969–1984) of 35mm feature film American pornography (Paasonen and Saarenmaa). Arguably, in these films the slasher horror genre reflects conventions previously ass
