Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Para facilitar la consulta se adjuntan índices onomásticos, la bibliografía y las fuentes manuscritas e impresas consultadas.<br/><br/>Palabras clave:<br/>· Orden de Nuestra Señora de la Merced,<br/>· Formación de los frailes,<br/>· Bibliotecas conventuales,<br/>· Índices de bibliotecas,<br/>· Patrimonio bibliográfico,<br/>· Repertorios bibliográficos,<br/>· Historia de las ideas.<br><i>This dissertation analyzes the collection of the library of the former convent of the Our Lady of Mercy Order, based on the index," Índice general de esta biblioteca del convento de la Merced de Barcelona", compiled in 1817 by Fray Joaquín Borgas, and held by the University of Barcelona Library's Old Book Collection (manuscript 1.500). <br/><br/>Library indexes, beyond their function of control of, and access to, a collection are a basic tool for understanding the profile of readers, as well as for permitting the study of the dissemination of ideas. By studying them, one can trace a fuller cultural history and guarantee the safekeeping and custody of bibliographic patrimony.<br/><br/>The transcription of the Index poses questions about its own material nature, the significance of the information contained in it, the reasons for which convent libraries were created and the functions that they performed, and finally, the intellectual trajectory of the Our Lady of Mercy Order. This has required writing six centuries of history based on documents that came from the old convent archive, such as constitutions, chapter minutes, and inventories and visitor logs, conserved for the most part in the Archive of the Crown of Aragon (ACA).<br/><br/>The dissertation is presented in four main blocks: the first (chapter I), a spatial-temporal framework; the second (chapters II-V), a conceptual framework of a historic nature; the third (chapters VI-XI), a study of the convent library from a library science perspective; and the fourth (chapter X), a brief history of ideas, based on the authors and works contained in the Index.<br/><br/>As opposed to history, sociology, law, economy, philology or other areas of knowledge, library science -the perspective applied to this research-- considers the relation between books and readers or written culture and thus can overcome the partial approaches offered by the other disciplines, allowing a global vision of the process to be presented. Library science makes it possible to study how the libraries of entities contribute to achieving institutional objectives, since their reason for existing is solely to serve the organization to which they belong.<br/><br/>The analysis of the material nature of the "Índice general de esta biblioteca del convento de la Merced de Barcelona" has allowed the discovery of previously unknown aspects of the index, such as the identity of the author and the date of compilation. After setting out the criteria for the transcription, the entire index is reproduced. The cited authors are identified and the 5,521 volumes included in it have been located through searches conducted in bibliographic patrimony catalogues, such as the Old Books Collection of the University of Barcelona, the "Catàleg Col·lectiu del Patrimoni Bibliogràfic de Catalunya" (CCPBC), "Catálogo Colectivo de Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español" (CCPBE) and the "Catalogue Collectif de France" (CCFr), among others. The identification and location of the copies is justified due to the Bibliography's function as a tool. As such, a repertoire has been prepared based on the reproduction of the bibliographic records located in the catalogues cited above. The function as a tool contributes to the informational function of the Bibliography from which the intellectual content of the Index is analyzed, thus permitting an understanding of the intellectual history of the Order.<br/><br/>The conclusions are set out around four hubs: historical-spiritual-formative; librarian; history of ideas; and methodological.<br/><br/>As an aid to users the dissertation includes a bibliography, indexes of names, and a list of consulted sources, both manuscript and print. </i>

Roselló, i. Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/373913.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is the analysis, based on a case study, of the legal regime of entitlement and of disentitlement as well as of the construction of the ex novo administration created to perform this task. Public domain or public service were concepts not defined yet in the legislation and the first academics started to define them in their academic treatise. The plot in which the Sant Josep de la Rambla’s convent burn in 1835 was long pursued by the Barcelona town hall since the mid XVIII century, for settling a food market. This plot would finally become town hall property given that the disentitlement failed in achieving to constitute a big family of small owners. However, it succeeded in collectivizing, paradoxically from the generic idea of article 2 of the Royal Decree of February 19, 1836, that allowed that some of the properties confiscated to convents could be given a public use. The result of the disentitlement that is concluded here does not refer to the private profits that could have eventually been generated but to the collective ones.

Abstract:
The Bellevue Community Plan (BCP) was developed to be consistent with the Merced Vision 2030 General Plan, and is highly reflective of its policies, illustrative plans and guiding features, such as providing significant employment generating uses that would benefit from being in close proximity to the UC Merced campus. The BCP establishes a high-level planning framework that strikes a balance between certainty and flexibility by anchoring key land uses while allowing their size to adapt to changing market conditions in response to economic growth and the expansion of UC Merced. While the BCP provides a broad range of uses and densities that could occur throughout the plan area, it emphasizes the foundational building blocks of street connectivity, functional mobility choices, active and passive recreation open space corridors and bikeways, gateway street designs, and attractive business park settings to create a great sense of place with investment certainty.

Abstract:
Gods, Have Merced! chronicles the struggle of Jose Merced, a Santeria priest, with the city of Euless, Texas, where he has been residing for 17 years in an effort to overrule an ordinance that bans the most critical element of his faith: animal sacrifice. As the city officials justify the ban on the basis of public health, Merced thinks he is merely a victim of selective code enforcement aimed a restricting his freedom of religion. Local and national media covered the lawsuit he filed against the City of Euless, and Merced seems ready to take the fight over animal sacrifice to the United States Supreme Court. He wants American justice to give his African-originated religion recognized in a city where people seem uneasy about a practice that brings back the historic fears of Voodoo and its popularly assumed malefic practices. The film explores the complex structure of Santeria, its African roots, its renaissance in the Americas and the very controversial issue of animal sacrifice in the US.

Ramalho, Maria Leonor Rebelo Pinto Palma. "Muro, convento e palácio." Master's thesis, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Arquitetura, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/19130.

Abstract:
Por último, e em resultado da leitura da pré-existência, são estudados os conceitos do muro, da matéria e da luz, como caminho conceptual e formal do Projeto.<br>ABSTRACT: As we walk down Madre Deus Street, we can see a wall going all the way from Madre Deus Convent up to Nisa Palace. We are not able to glimpse what goes on behind such wall but one can acknowledge to be standing before two outstanding landmarks of Chelas’ Valley, even though those landmarks have in the meantime become foreigners in the City. From the street, the countless urban interventions done therein are easily perceived. However, it is only when we cross that wall that we are able to grasp the complexities develo over time. One can see outdoor spaces and buildings shared by two different entities along with interim situations that have been converted into final solutions. That place where crowded and empty spaces meet, yearns for some much needed boundaries’ clarification and a refreshed identity. Nonetheless where once such walls have hosted a convent and a palace, today stands the National Museum of Tile and D. Maria Pia School. By means of a demolition, rehabilitation and construction strategy, we offer an Expansion of the Museum aimed not only at providing for the current and effective needs of the Museum, but also in creating an Upkeep and Restoration School. The link between the two worlds - the Museum and the School - intends to implement new museology theories and honor the historical connection between the Convent and the Palace that has never ceased to exist. Finally and as a result from readings on its preexistence, the concepts of wall, mass and light were considered as conceptual and formal guidelines of project.<br>N/A

Abstract:
Based on data found in other corpora, the discussion also includes uses of su merced in official written communication. It reviews earlier studies about su merced in Latin America and concludes that this address form appears in the context of asymmetrical social relations between groups and especially in the speech of Africans and their descendants. Keywords: su merced – Bozal Spanish – XIX century – language contact

Abstract:
The recent establishment of the University of California Merced presents a unique and invaluable opportunity to plan, carry out, and monitor the development and growth of a new university campus utilizing the most advanced sustainable concepts and technologies available today. Although retrofitting and obsolete building construction codes are not an issue, this community-scale project is already facing operational questions related to the integration of renewable resources. The actual operation at a high percentage of renewable power generation and building efficiency provides invaluable information to analyze the operation that mimic or even exceed California’s 20% and future 33% renewable portfolio standards. UC Merced is already working to meet the commitment of zero net energy by 2020 that is part of the triple-zero challenge that also includes elimination of landfill waste and climate neutrality in the same timeframe. In this work, current findings about this integration strategy are provided.

Abstract:
Water heating accounts for a significant fraction of the energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors. A wide variety of water heater configurations are available some of which have higher operating costs than others. The use of solar water heaters is becoming more widespread in many countries usually due to the low operating costs associated with the technology. This paper describes the first implementation of an aluminum-base minichannel solar water heater currently being tested at the University of California Merced.

Abstract:
Abstract: In the 1950s Le Corbusier brings into being the convent of Sainte Marie de la Tourette which was recognised by the Oeuvre complète as his “most significant work” as it was “a confrontation and a synthesis of its evolution from Cartuja de Ema, that he discovered and drew in Italy in 1911…” This article attempts to reveal the meaning of this affirmation, centring the focus of its attention on the 5 year fase of the project between 1953 and 1957. It is in this period of design and development of ideas at the Atelier de LC, prior to construction, that we discover the keys to understand and explain the work. The following sections are arranged in the project’s chronological order and in each one two characteristic concepts are analysed. This binary procedure is frequently used by the architect so that the concepts and ideas explode, become transparent or show their intimate structure with a higher intensity than if they were presented in isolation, providing a deliberation like a flat surface that is impossible to bite. Abstract:
Variability and uncertainty in renewable energy generation has a direct impact on the cost of electricity prices because of the potential impacts on the operation of existing power generating units. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study detailing the variability added to the UC Merced campus load after including a 1-MW photovolataic (PV) plant to supply a significant amount (25–30% of maximum demand) of the energy load. Cost estimates of the required mechanisms to compensate for the variability are calculated based on utility prices and the PV power output fluctuations. The resulting cost estimates are then compared with solar power variability metrics in order to show the economic impacts of solar variability. Additionally, a simulation is performed for a integrated battery storage system to mitigate the PV fluctuations by solving a revenues optimization formulation. The simulated costs are also correlated with three variability metrics including the standard deviation of the fluctuations and the mean absolute values of the fluctuations. In order to extrapolate results from the case study to a more general scenario, we show that the obtained correlations of normalized variables can be useful for providing estimates on the financial impacts of variable generation resources based on more widely available solar irradiance data.

Abstract:
The Altamont Pass commuter survey study examines commuters’ perceptions and behaviors towards public transportation during 2019-2020. Results are compared with surveys conducted in 2000 and 2006 to investigate whether there have been any longitudinal changes in the perceptions and behaviors of Altamont Pass commuters over the twenty-year interval. As the previous surveys do, this study focuses on the same three counties, namely, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Merced that comprise the Northern San Joaquin Valley (NSJV). When compared with the previous surveys, these findings reveal some significant differences of responses to most questions, and minor differences of responses to other questions, prompting several important conclusions.
