Abstract:
This dissertation assesses the role of education quality in the convergence process of GDP per capita through teacher\'s quality impact in human capital formation. The simple two-period OLG model suggests initial level of teacher\'s human capital is important to explain non-convergence, even when education quality return is decreasing. This non-convergence arises because an initially low level of teachers\' human capital translates into a low level of human capital transferred to students, which means a low level of teachers\' human capital in the next period, and so on. This work, therefore, provides an alternative explanation of why countries income does not converge, even when differences in other inputs are not accounted for

The software development industry has gone through great changes in the last decade. The shift from computer to mobile devices, alongside the popularization of internet of things and wearables have expanded markets and changed the industry. All these factors combined offer many opportunities in innovative new market niches. However, technology-sector projects and startups often fail for a number of reasons that are rarely technical, related instead to market and customer discovery. One of the possible causes is that higher education in software development in the field of Computer Science overlooks business and market aspects, consequently underpreparing students to deal with real-life challenges in software projects. In order to address this situation, a management model meant to guide the development of innovative software products is proposed. This model, named Converge, considers every software project is based on three pillars – technical ability, market and user. To accommodate those three aspects, state of the art methods connected to each pillar were studied extensively and combined. Those methods are Agile development (represented by Scrum and Extreme Programming practices), Lean Startup and Design Thinking. Converge Model’s efficacy in guiding software projects was assessed by implanting the model inside a University mobile experimentation lab that consisted exclusively of undergraduate students. After implantation, there was an assessment of the model’s impact on final products, development process and students’ education, during 10 months. Two case studies were done and are described in this work, explaining the process and listing qualitative results. Finally, to evaluate whether students who took part in the lab changed their perception of software development and developed skills besides technical abilities, a subjective questionnaire was applied and its results examined, depicting Converge Model’s influence on students’ formation and possible educational applications.

Fuentes, Martinez Ana. "Teachers’ tactics when programming and mathematics converge."

Abstract:
Teachers’ everyday practices are embedded in school contexts in which their teaching autonomy is constrained by rules, moral obligations, physical settings, and official directives. When a curricular revision mandated that programming was to be a part of mathematics in upper secondary education, teachers’ conditions changed. How teachers adapted to the new curriculum and how they navigated the tensions and contradictions that they encountered is in this thesis analyzed in terms of teachers’ tactics and policy strategies. The overall goal of the investigation is to contribute to a critical understanding of how mathematics teachers integrate programming in their professional practice and how this integration aligns and diverges from the intentions behind the reform. The empirical material is drawn from nine individual interviews with mathematics teachers that were already proficient in programming. The teachers’ unit plans and other lesson materials featuring programming activities served as a trigger point to delve into further reflections upon their own professional practices. To complete the scene, the policy documents were also examined. These included the mathematics curriculum, as well as related official documents and a collection of institutionally sanctioned programming exercises and demonstrations. Two tactical approaches were made apparent when mathematics teachers began to integrate computer programming in their subject: Dual teaching and Interspersed programming. The teacher’s use of dual teaching practices or interspersed programming are tactics shaped by and in response to the conditions of the new curriculum and their own preferences and views on student learning. These two tactics disclose different ontological commitments in relation to the strategies dictated by the curriculum and reflect a cardinal distinction between planning mathematics activities with elements of programming and planning programming activities with elements of mathematics. Of relevance for teachers and curriculum designers is the understanding of (a) how the notion of programming and mathematics as separate subjects oversimplifies teachers’ actual integration practices, and (b) how the curricular choices made by policy can shape the teaching tactics adopted by educators.

Everything That Rises Must Converge is a work for piano and orchestra in one movement. It is structured in three main sections preceded by an introduction, which resembles a traditional three-movement concerto reduced to one movement. Since all of the sections explore a common musical thread, it has a feeling of "stream-ofconsciousness" and free association that suggest genres such as the rhapsody and symphonic tone poem. The thematic motto that begins the piece returns only at points of important formal delineations and is not presented by the piano itself until the work's final moments. The composition also utilizes a foreshadowing technique wherein secondary material in one section is revealed as primary in later sections. The piece is titled after a short story by Flannery O'Connor and reflects its evocative imagery through the frequent use of ascending gestures as well as its final convergence of thematic ideas and musical forces.

Burdett, Thomas C. "Axon Death Pathways Converge on Axed to Promote Axon Disassembly." eScholarship@UMMS, 2017. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/898.

Full text
Abstract:
Axons use a conserved program to actively drive their own destruction after injury. Axon degeneration is present in many neurological disorders and an axon death program could be a major pharmaceutical target to preserve neuronal function. This intrinsic signaling cascade activates pro-degenerative dSarm/Sarm1, rapidly depletes axonal stores of NAD+, and terminates in cytoskeletal breakdown. Conversely, loss of dSarm/Sarm1, maintenance of NAD+ levels or its biosynthetic enzyme Nmnat, result in long-term morphological perseveration of severed axons. Exactly how dSarm/Sarm1 and loss of NAD+ execute axon death remains poorly defined. We sought to uncover novel regulators of axon death and maintenance by performing a deficiency screen and a forward genetic mutagenesis screen in axotomized Drosophila wing sensory neurons. We identified a BTB domain protein enriched in neurons, we named Axundead (Axed), which is specifically required for axon death. Severed axons harboring loss of function mutations in axed, similar to dSarm mutants, remain preserved for 50 days post axotomy. Spontaneous neurodegeneration induced by activated dSarm or dNmnat depletion are both suppressed in axed mutants, but not in dSarm mutant alleles. Additionally, severed axed mutant axons also expressing activated dSarm or lacking Nmnat are preserved. These results indicate that dSarm acts upstream of dNmnat loss, and both events precede essential Axed function and axon destruction. Thus, the axon death pathway converges on Axed function.

Pettinger, Terry Lynn O'Brien. "Where Intellect and Intuition Converge: Epistemological Errancies in the Poetry of Jorie Graham." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31158.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past two decades, American poet Jorie Graham has composed six books of poems. Graham struggles to understand how we make sense of the world through thinking grounded in the logical operations of reason and through thinking that operates as more of a detached wandering that enables direct experiential participation in the present moment-modes of thought occasionally differentiated as "intellect" and "intuition." Throughout her work, Graham repeatedly experiments with ways to "frustrate" the intellect in order for intuition to wander over an idea while at the same time she relies on the intellect to rescue the mind from directionless wandering. In her early poetry Graham explores ways of defining and describing what it feels like to think. Later, she enacts thinking within the lines of her poems, sometimes allegorizing the operation of the intellect and intuition and sometimes provoking readers into an experience of one particular way of thinking through the act of reading. This study examines Graham's various successes and failures as she struggles to discover "blossoming" moments of balance between the controlling intellect and the wandering intuition. Beginning with the origins of this line of thinking in Graham's early work, this study traces the poet's path of development through each book of poems in order to demonstrate the back and forth momentum shifts of intellect giving way to intuition and intuition being organized by rational thought. Through her epistemological errancies, her wanderings within and without ways of knowing, Graham discovers "blossoming" moments of wholeness where both modes of thought meet "in solution, unsolved."

Ivanova, Tsvetomira Georgieva 1978. "The DNA damage and the DNA synthesis checkpoints converge at the MBF transcription factor." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/116932.

Full text
Abstract:
DNA damage is an ongoing threat to both the ability of the cell to faithfully transmit genetic information to its offspring as well as to its own survival. In order to maintain genomic integrity, eukaryotes have developed a highly conserved mechanism to detect, signal and repair damage in DNA, known as the DNA damage response (DDR). In fission yeast the two DDR pathways converge at the regulation of single transcriptional factor complex (MBF) resulting in opposite directions. We have shown that when the DNA-synthesis checkpoint is activated, Max1 is phosphorylated by Cds1 resulting in the abrogation of its binding to MBF. As a consequence, MBF-dependent transcription is maintained active until cells are able to overcome the replication challenge. In contrast, upon DNA damage, Chk1 the effector kinase of DNA damage checkpoint is activated and blocks the cell cycle progression, inducing DNA repair and repressing the MBF dependent transcription. We have revealed that Cdc10 is the target of the DNA-damage checkpoint and when cells are treated with MMS or are exposed to IR, Chk1 phosphorylates Cdc10 inducing the exit of MBF from chromatin. The consequence is that under these conditions, MBF-dependent transcription is repressed. Thus, Max1 and Cdc10 couple normal cell cycle regulation and the DNA-synthesis and DNA-damage checkpoints into MBF.

Batlle, Ana. "Regulation of BCL6:p38 MAPK signalling and CTCF transcriptional regulation converge at exon 1." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/6093.

Full text
Abstract:
BCL6 is a zinc finger transcriptional repressor, which is highly expressed in germinal centre B-cells, and is essential for germinal centre formation and T-dependent antibody responses. Deregulated BCL6 expression is associated with certain non- Hodgkin’s lymphomas. High expression is observed in breast cancer. Tight lineage and temporal regulation of BCL6 is, therefore, required for normal immunity and abnormal regulation occurs in cancer. Regulatory mechanisms have been analysed in two settings. Firstly, BCL6 is strongly induced by the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, Imatinib, in chronic myeloid leukaemia lymphoid blast crisis cell lines, and this effect was used in order to study the effects of phospho-protein signalling on BCL6 expression and a major finding is that p38 MAPK induced BCL6. Also, p38 is, at least in part, responsible for BCL6 expression in basal conditions in the germinal centre representative Burkitt’s lymphoma cell lines and that qualitatively different CD40 stimuli can either induce or repress BCL6 expression. Luciferase assays showed that p38 acts at a 300bp sequence immediately 5’ of exon 1, and probably also at more distal sequences. Overall it appears that the balance between positive and negative regulatory controls BCL6 expression with inhibitory signalling pathways being predominant in most circumstances. Focusing on BCL6 exon 1, a binding site for the multifunctional regulator CTCF was identified. CTCF interacts in vitro and in vivo with this sequence. Reduced expression of CTCF in germinal centre cells caused a moderate reduction of BCL6 expression. Finally, although no clear differences were observed in the methylation status of the CTCF binding site on exon 1, a significant enrichment of active histone modifications at this site was observed in BCL6 expressing cells, suggesting that CTCF may have a role in the epigenetic regulation of BCL6.

Abstract:

Lam, Hester. "Why does the U.S. Continue to Use GAAP and Will it Ever Converge to IFRS?" Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1066.

Abstract:
The United States has a long history of doing things differently than other countries. Its accounting standards are no different; to date, it continues to use its own Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and have yet to converge to the International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS") as set by the International Accounting Standards Board. In 2008, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") Chairman Christopher Cox published a press release in which the SEC published for public comment a roadmap towards convergence by 2014. However, in subsequent years, Memorandum of Understandings published by the IASB and the United States' Financial Accounting Standards Boards ("FASB") pushed back the date of implementation at each publication. As a result, the convergence efforts have been stalling greatly. It is very unlikely that the U.S. will ever completely converge to IFRS as the financial costs and obstacles to convergence are not insignificant. Not only will the costs of implication be great, but also the costs of training and education of auditors and accountants. It is not feasible for the U.S. to converge with IFRS in the near future, as the benefits most countries obtain through convergence such as increased quality of financial statements will not be realized. As such, this paper seeks to prove why IFRS convergence will not be realized in the United States.

Luedtke, Dalyn. "Reality Television and the Rhetoric of Play: What Happens When Old and New Media Converge." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/223341.

Abstract:
Little attention has been paid to the rhetorical practices and implications of reality television within the field of rhetoric and composition. In fact, it is easy to argue that television as a whole has been largely ignored, leaving the research to scholars in media, communication, and cultural studies. However, the convergence of media has raised questions about the nature of the viewing practices of contemporary television audiences--specifically regarding how to reconcile the complex texts audiences produce in response to television with the passive model of consumption that has defined it. Game scholars, as well as scholars of computers and composition, have theorized the powerful rhetorical potential of play with regard to video games, but they have yet to consider the way play has been invoked in other more traditional media. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to connect old media and new by considering how television, specifically reality TV, engages audiences across platforms, how audiences extend their own experience with reality programs, and what this might mean to rhetoric and composition scholars about contemporary literacy practices. In this dissertation, I argue that reality television has successfully used rhetorics of play and new media technologies to engage audiences within, across, and between programs and their digital environments. Using Survivor as a case study, I analyze the strategies that producers use to invite audiences into the program, specifically focusing on the generic characteristics that instigate play, the program's online presence, and the ways in which viewers respond by producing their own texts such as fantasy Survivor games, blogs, discussion forums, and video mash-ups. By doing so, I demonstrate how reality TV and new media technology have renegotiated the relationship among producers, audiences, and texts. Significantly, viewers become active participants with, as well as producers of, texts. Additionally, I use this research to study how play encourages self-motivated writing, community building, and the possible uses for "serious play" within the composition classroom.

Abstract:
This study reveals the potential for urban design where multi-modal transportation corridors intersect. An overarching challenge to urban design and planning relates to the impact mobility has on the social, environmental, and economic health of America's cities, including Indianapolis. In response to this challenge, this study explores transit-oriented development, a strategy based on the principle that transportation and land use are closely related and should therefore be planned in coordination, as a viable alternative to current practices that force transportation to follow rather than inspire and enhance development. Two primary phases constitute the study. The first introduces the principles of transit-oriented development. This phase also highlights some of the urban design opportunities that stem from this alternative strategy and examines and evaluates how effectively transit-oriented development principles work in various American cities. The second phase explores how these principles may be applied to the city of Indianapolis and demonstrates how one site within the city can serve as a model for coordinating various modes of transportation with adjacent land use. This phase consists of selecting a demonstration site within the city, researching the existing and historical make-up of the site, and developing a master plan for the site. The master plan is based on two primary goals-to create a safe and efficient transportation node and to create a unique and vibrant urban "place" that functions as both an origin and a destination.

Canullo, Cecilia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
\"The future today: the Radiojournalism education in the age medias\' convergence\" arises from the emergence of a new think about the training process of students university, in the current context, they are prepared to act as journalists in radio stations that have crossed the border of electromagnetic waves and settled also on the Internet, which offer audio content that converge with other media expressivity. This work, which is supported in Communication/Education interface, assumed the purpose of analyzing the occurrence, in the process of training in Radiojournalism, actions that link the theoretical/practical content ministered by medias\' converge. The distancing between the training and the reality came as a hypothesis and the possible lack of activities relating the Radiojournalism and the medias\' convergence. The methodology was based on a literature review, interviews and case studies, that verified training in Radiojournalism in journalism courses offered by leading universities in Brazil and Portugal, which were, respectively: the Departamento de Jornalismo e Editoração da Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo (CJE - ECA/USP) and the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH/UNL). After undertake verification proposed, this study found that the media\'s convergence don\'t appear integrated with theoretical actions / promoted practices by the disciplines in Brazil and Portugal. Meantime it has become evident, in the training processes, the occurrence of technological convergence and content. It was concluded that such a finding allows enlarging in part the students the reality in which the Radio Journalism remains established. On the other hand, the lack of proposals exploiting the medias\' convergence of in the subjects characterized as unfavorable to the formation by don\'t provide to students, knowledge of this phenomenon enhanced by the presence and integration of media in the digital environment.

Abstract:
Neurodegeneration is an increasing problem due to the eldering population. Studies on neurodegenerative proteinopathies, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease have mainly been focused in the deleterious effects due to the aggregating proteins -Synuclein, Aβ and Tau. However, much less effort has been put in understanding the systematic and pathological spreading of the diseases from one brain region to the other. In the present work, we aim to investigate relationships between aggregating proteins and microdomains of the plasma membrane involved in endo-/exo-cytosis. Lipid rafts are specialized membrane microdomains implicated in different cell-cell communication pathways such as endocytosis and exocytosis. In both yeast models and higher eukaryotic cells such as murine neuronal cell cultures, we identified -Synuclein, the -Synuclein interaction partner Synphilin-1 and Tau as lipid raft interacting proteins. It might be that the pathological spreading of the diseases goes through lipid raft dependent cell-cell communication pathways. In this context, we investigated the effect of Synphilin-1 on the - Synuclein-lipid raft interaction and identified the amino-acid sequences of tau implicated in the binding of tau to these microdomains. In parallel, we investigated the effect of Synphilin-1 on the -Synuclein biology and observed that Synphilin-1 increased -Synuclein toxicity in a yeast Parkinson’s disease model. We have also shown that Synphilin-1 expression increases both inclusion formation and phosphorylation of -Synuclein. We therefore concluded that Synphilin-1 increases the pathological properties of -Synuclein. Finally, in the scope of these data, protein-lipid interactions and vesicle trafficking may be analyzed in yeast models. Using yeast endocytosis mutants, we have investigated, at which point during endocytosis, -Synuclein acquired its toxicity. We have thereby identified that the toxicity due to -Synuclein expression in yeast was alleviated upon blockage of early endocytotic events as well as upon blockage of vesicle recycling. It means that -Synuclein acquires its toxicity upon endocytosis and recycling. In perspective, such work may be developed with Synphilin-1 and Tau proteins to further investigate how vesicle trafficking may be involved in the spreading of aggregating proteins in neurodegenerative disorders

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

The vacuole in Saccharomyces cerevisiae serves as a model for the mammalian lysosome. In a genome wide screen for mutants with severe growth hypersensitivity to hygromycin B, our lab identified 14 HHY genes. Each of the hhy mutants is defective in vacuolar trafficking and/or function and also sensitive to rapamycin and caffeine, suggesting a compromised target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase pathway. My research divides the hhy mutants into two groups based on quantitative growth analyses in the presence of hygromycin B. (1) a super affected group (s-hhy's) and (2) a dose-dependent group (d-hhy's). The s-HHY genes include CHC1, DRS2, SAC1, VPS1, VPS34, VPS45, VPS52, and VPS54. Evaluation of the known functions of s-HHY gene products reveals vesicular trafficking function at the trans-Golgi and late endosome interface to be a common factor. In yeast, the TORC1 complex localizes to the vacuole. Because a compromised TORC1 complex signaling is suggested in hhy mutant strains due to their caffeine or rapamycin sensitivity, I hypothesized that compromised TORC1 signaling in HHY's may be due to defects in the vacuolar localization of Tor1 kinase. To assess Tor1 kinase localization, we utilized a strain expressing endogenously tagged Tor1-GFP and assayed localization to the vacuolar membrane in each of the s-hhy mutants using confocal microscopy. In wild-type cells, Tor1-GFP co-localizes with the vacuolar membrane marker FM4-64 while s-hhy deletion strains fail to localize Tor1-GFP to the vacuolar membrane when treated with hygromycin B. Our results implicate that Tor1p is transported to the vacuole membrane via the late endosome (CPY pathway) and not the ALP (Vam3) pathway. Additionally, s-hhy mutants are unable to recover growth after a 4-hour treatment with hygromycin B, similar to EG0 mutants, which fail to exit from G0 after treatment with the TORC1 inhibiting drug rapamycin. Based on our data, we propose a model in which the s-HHY gene functions in vesicular trafficking at the trans-Golgi/late endosome interface are involved in recruitment and subsequent transport of Tor1p to the vacuolar membrane, and that interface is hypersensitive to hygromycin B. We also propose that Tor1 kinase localization at the vacuole is essential for its cell cycle regulatory function.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Optimisation strategies on assembly design are often time expensive on industrial case. The main difficulties are due to the non-linearties of the calculation (contact, friction and gap between pieces). The computation cost can be too expensive to lead a global optimization with a large number of evaluation of the mechanical problem. In order to achieve this kind of optimization problems, this work purposes to use a two-levels models optimization strategy. THe first level is defined thanks to the construction of a metamodel which is used to lead a global optimization. On the second level, a local optimization is used on the real mechanical model thanks to the results got from the first level. Two main tools are used in this work. The first one is the multiparametric LaTIn method which enables to reduce drastically the computational time for solving several similar mechanical assembly design problems. The other tool is the one which is the most developped in this work is the constrcution of multi-fidelty surrogate models. Indeed, the LaTIn method in an iterative method, so it is possible to define an error indicator which can be used as a level of convergence of the calculation. The construction of multi-fidelity metamodels has for particularity to incorpore several kind of information which are named as "totally converged" if the calculation has been converged and "partially converged" if the calculation has been stopped premarturly.Different multi-fidélity methods have been investigated in this work on several mechnaical examples in the aim to define the most performant. Industrial case test are trated in this thesis. In order to achieve this kind of optimization problems with an acceptable computational time, this work propose to use a two-levels model optimization strategy based on two main tools: (1) the multiparametric strategy based on the LaTIn method that enables to reduce significantly the computational time for solving many similar mechanical assembly problems and (2) a cokriging metamodel built using responses and gradients computed by the mechanical solver on few sets of design parameters. The metamodel provides very inexpensive approximate responses of the objective function and it enables to achieve a global optimisation and to obtain the global optimum. The cokriging metamodel was reviewed in detail using analytical test functions and some mechanical benchmarks. The quality of the approximation and the building cost were compared with classical kriging approach. Moreover, a complete study of the multiparametric strategy was proposed using many mechanical benchmarks included many kinds and numbers of design parameters. The performance in term of computational time of the whole optimisation process was illustrated

The arrival of photons at a given location is a Poisson process with an associated shot noise which rises with the square root of the number of photons received. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a square root transfer function can quantize photonic signals with LSB size kept constant with respect to the photon shot noise. In imaging applications, this can greatly reduce the number of bits needed to characterize a signal compared to a linear ADC without detrimental effects to image quality. Such a device, based on the Analogic MuSIC chip, was designed and tested for the needs of a medical computed tomography (CT) device. The experimental setup increases the MuSIC sampling frequency from 3kHz to 7kHz, while reducing the amount of data necessary for reconstruction. A constant quantization noise to photon shot noise ratio acceptable for CT is maintained by sizing each LSB to be one half the rms noise level. Results show an INL of 2.5 LSB, which is reduced to 0.27 LSB after a correction scheme.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is to understand Edith Stein (1891-1942), an iconic XX century figure, using historical and psychoanalytical perspectives as well as an hermeneutical method. From Jewish origin, Stein was born in Breslau, Prussia, studied with E. Husserl and developed important phenomenological investigations, in education, womanhood, philosophy, theology and mystic. However could not be an academic because of discrimination against both women and Jews. Subsequently she converted to Catholicism and even became a Carmelite monk, neither of which was enough to escape persecution of the Nazis. She flew to Holland, but was arrested by the Gestapo, taken to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942, where her life ended in a gas chamber. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998. This work examines the roots and influences of her theoretical contributions as well as the way she answered the fundamental human questions that she dealt with during her lifetime as a woman, a philosopher and a Christian-Jew. The main sources are Steins autobiography, letters, writings and other literature dealing with her life and times.

You, Keping Electrical Engineering &amp Telecommunications Faculty of Engineering UNSW. "A new bidirectional AC-DC converter using matrix converter and Z-source converter topologies." Awarded by:University of New South Wales, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/37450.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new bidirectional three-phase AC-DC power converter using matrix converter and Z-source inverter topologies. Advantages of the AC-DC matrix converter are the inherently controllable power factor, the tight DC voltage regulation, the wide bandwidth with quick response to load variation, the single-stage buck-voltage AC-to-DC power conversion; advantages of the z-source inverter are the increased reliability by allowing the shoot-through between upper and lower power switches of one inverter leg, insensitivity to DC bus voltage due to the extra freedom of controlling DC-link voltage. The proposed Matrix-Z-source converter (MZC) marries up both advantages of AC-DC matrix converter and Z-source inverter. It can achieve voltage-boost DC-AC inversion capable of variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) AC output; it can achieve voltage-buck AC-DC rectification capable of inherent control over AC current phase angle and DC output regulation with a (VVVF) AC source supply. Both foresaid performance in DC-AC inversion and AC-DC rectification can be implemented in a simple open-loop control manner. Three constraints of VSI, in the bidirectional AC-DC power conversion, are the peak AC voltages are always less than DC-link voltage, closed-loop control has to be employed when DC regulation and/or AC current phase angle control are required, and AC voltage is sensitive to the variation of the DC-link voltage in DC-AC inversion. The voltage-boost inversion and/or voltage-buck rectification of MZC overcomes the first constraint; thus MZC enables the AC machine voltage increased higher than DC-link voltage hence advantages of running AC machine at relatively high voltages are enabled. The direct DC voltage regulation and inherent AC-current-phase-angle control of MZC overcomes the second constraint in an open-loop manner; hence a simplified system design is obtained with sufficient room for the further improvement by closed-loop control schemes. The extra freedom in controlling DC-link voltage of MZC overcomes the third constraint hence a DC source voltage adaptable inverter is obtained. This thesis focuses on the study of the feasibility of the proposed MZC through theoretical analysis and experimental verification. At first, the proposed MZC is conceptually constructed by examining the quadrant operation of AC-DC matrix converter and Z-source inverter. After the examination of the operating principles of both AC-DC matrix converter and Z-source inverter, the configuration of MZC is then proposed. The MZC has two operating modes: DC-AC inversion and AC-DC rectification. Circuit analysis for both operating modes shows that the new topology does not impose critical conflict in circuit design or extra restriction in parameterization. On the contrary, one version of the proposed MZC can make full advantage of Z-source network components in both operating modes, i.e. a pair of Z-source inductor and capacitor can be used as low-pass filter in AC-DC rectification. The modulation strategy, average modeling of system, and features of critical variables for circuit design of the proposed MZC were examined for each operating mode. Simulations of the proposed MZC and its experimental verification have been presented. Analytical models of conduction and switching losses of the power-switch network in different operating mode have shown that the losses in the MZC compare favorably with conventional VSI for a range of power factor and modulation indices.

Abstract:
For the past twenty years, the theoretical advance of the matrix converters has been impeded by the complexity arising from the time-varying trigonometric functions in their transformation matrix. In addition, the switching difficulties associated with the bidirectional switches have complicated the practical implementation of this class of converters.
In this thesis, the dyadic matrix structure and the a-b-c to d-q-0 transformation have been melded together to develop the dyadic matrix converter theory which is a generalized theory for the three-phase to three-phase matrix converters.
The thesis addresses the zero-sequence interaction in the matrix converters and the role of the zero-sequence elements in the Displacement Power Factor (DPF) correction on the utility-side, based on the Static VAR Controller (SVC) principle. Also, it is proved that using all the control degrees of freedom available, the dual condition of Unity Displacement Power Factor (UDPF) on side-1 and Field Vector Control (FVC) on side-2 can be established.
In this thesis, a new matrix converter topology, based on the three-phase voltage-source converters, has been proposed in which the switching difficulties reported in the conventional nine-bidirectional-switch topology have been bypassed. The theoretical expectations have been verified by the simulation as well as experimental tests on a laboratory prototype of the new matrix converter topology composed of three units of voltage-source converters each rated at 1 kVA.

The goal of this thesis is to provide enhanced mechanisms to deploy competitive services in a rapid and cost-effective manner. To achieve this goal, we first propose an automatic service composition model relying on an IMS/Web converged environment. This service composition model is intended to be one in which even non-professional users can easily reuse existing services to create new services. To further improve the automatic service composition feature, three strategies including passive update, active update and hybrid update are proposed and analyzed. We then propose a centralized service exposure framework for a variey of services, including Telecom / Web / Device / user-generated services. This framework aims at enhancing the user-centric and convergence features, and providing the unified access to diverse services.Subsequently, two P2P based service information sharing models are designed to complement the centralized service exposure model : i) A hierarchical P2P based model, which reuses Chord for guaranteeing the service discovery efficiency, meanwhile adopts the concept of abstract service publication and discovery for enabling the ambiguous services searching. ii) A triplex P2P overlay based model, which mainly targets the devices offered services. In this model, we use the gateways to delegate the devices residing in them for the global service exposure, and use a triplex overlay based architecture, which includes an underlying unstructured P2P layer, a Semantic Overlay Network (SON) based overlay and a service dependency overlay, for the service information sharing and discovery

Mobile traffic has grown substantially over the last few years; a trend which is expected to continue. The chief reasons behind this phenomenon are the availability of better handsets, faster cellular networks and the variety of content available on the internet suitable for consumption on mobile devices. The nature of the traffic is also changing from pure web browsing with latency-tolerant traffic to video, which is becoming the major class of content consumed on mobile devices. This trend, combined with the trend of decreasing prices per GB of data, which constrains the amount of money an operator can spend upgrading its network and they see increasing value in alternative solutions to address this data deluge while managing costs and maintaining customer service. A variety of solutions have been tried by operators based on enhanced charging, traffic engineering and backhaul infrastructure upgrades. Wi-Fi offload is one such promising solution as it addresses the congestion problem where it is most severe because of data consumption by users using streaming video. Cellular spectrum is a scarce and expensive resource for operators, and by allowing them to offload traffic to Wi-Fi networks in unlicensed spectrum they can free cellular spectrum for more valuable applications. Wi-Fi offload has, however, suffered from the incapability to manage seamless handovers and the required interaction of the user to select a Wi-Fi network. This made the process of attaching to a Wi-Fi network very complicated. These limitations have been addressed in recent standards and make the case for Wi-Fi offload more viable and attractive than earlier. At the same time new video optimization techniques such as H.264/SVC which allow the use of multiple streams and channel will allow content providers or distributors to use multiple networks and to scale video seamlessly according to handset capabilities and network conditions. The thesis proposes a solution, based on a set of new Wi-Fi standards and the new H.264/AVC codecs, which leverages a combination of low cost Wi-Fi and high reliability cellular networks to reduce the cost of video transmission while maintaining a comparable QOE for nomadic users. The thesis also enumerates some of the basic procedures that can be supported using the proposed architecture. This new architecture opens new opportunities for existing players in the mobile content ecosystem and adds new players to the ecosystem. The thesis identifies the needs and opportunities for each of the new player and also develops a cost model for streaming video using this solution.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Gray, Michael D. "Convergent field elastography." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53464.

Full text
Abstract:
A new approach to soft tissue elastography is presented. The work was motivated by the need to understand and mitigate the effects of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals. These efforts have been hampered by a lack of knowledge of in vivo tissue viscoelastic moduli. To address this problem, a measurement system concept was developed to non-invasively determine shear viscoelastic properties at tissue depths of over 12 cm – well beyond the capabilities of existing systems. The central design feature of the measurement system is a focused, sectored, annular ultrasonic source that generates a ring-like pressure field. This in turn produces a ring-like radiation force distribution in soft tissue, the response of which is primarily observable as a shear wave field that converges to the center of the force pattern. A second confocal transducer nested inside the shear wave generation source is used to measure the component of the shear wave motion along the beam axis. Propagation speed is estimated from displacement phase changes resulting from drive frequency induced dilation of the forcing radius. Forcing beams are modulated in order to establish shear speed frequency dependence, allowing quantification of shear speed dispersion. This concept for convergent field elastography (CFE) is intended to significantly improve the overall ability to estimate soft tissue shear speeds in thick, complex tissues while keeping within FDA-mandated ultrasound exposure limits. A prototype system was developed and tested in tissue mimicking materials for which properties were independently determined. Experiments were first carried out in a homogeneous material, and subsequently in a material containing elastic contrast inclusions. Transmission experiments with re-hydrated samples of bottlenose dolphin skull and mandibular bone samples were conducted to quantify ultrasonic beam attenuation and distortion effects, and their cumulative impact on CFE shear estimation performance. In addition to supporting marine mammal studies, the techniques developed in this thesis may enable or extend a wide range of human medical diagnostics.
