West, Andrew Geoffrey. "Moral relativism and corporate governance convergence." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25575.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the different aspects and claims associated with moral relativism can be applied to the issue of corporate governance convergence. The question of how corporate governance models may be converging around the world is considered within the law, finance and management literature. To date, however, there has been no detailed consideration from a moral perspective of whether such convergence should occur. This study investigates this question, using South Africa as a case study, through an analysis of the claims of Descriptive, Metaethical and Normative moral relativism. South Africa is selected as a useful case study in the light of its colonial heritage, complex demographics and the ongoing project of post-apartheid ‘nation-building’. Different moral philosophies can be identified that underlie the predominant models of corporate governance around the world. The differences between these moralities can be expressed in terms of differences in the prescribed moral obligations and objectives of corporations. The claim of Descriptive moral relativism is that there are significant differences in moral judgement between groups or individuals. In the context of South African corporate governance, the principal area of interest concerns moral judgements that reflect corporate obligations and objectives that differ from those that underlie the shareholder model evident in Anglo-American jurisdictions. This was investigated in three ways: firstly, through a literature study that identified existing evidence of moral judgements relevant to corporate governance in South Africa; secondly, through a quantitative survey of a group of professional accounting students in South Africa; thirdly, through a series of semi-structured interviews with professional accounting students in South Africa. In all three cases there was some, albeit limited, evidence to support the claim of Descriptive moral relativism. The claim of Metaethical moral relativism is that there is no single ‘true’ or ‘correct’ morality, but that morality is relative to different groups or individuals. Applied to corporate governance, this claim was investigated firstly by examining the arguments that a particular corporate governance model is morally superior and thus universally applicable, as well as by considering the extent of moral agreement on the issue. Secondly, the positions of prominent supporters of moral relativism were considered in terms of how these could be applied to the issue of corporate governance convergence. It was concluded that universalist claims in support of particular models of corporate governance are largely insufficient, and that a limited relativist approach is more plausible. The claim of Normative moral relativism is that one should not interfere with the actions of another where these are based on different moral judgements. Although the claims of Descriptive and Metaethical moral relativism have implications for the normative claim, the normative claim does not necessarily follow. Adopting a value of tolerance or accommodation (from the work of David Wong) can, however, strengthen the normative argument. It was concluded then that based on the evidence of this study, and within its limitations, it is morally wrong to impose an Anglo-American model of corporate governance on South Africa.
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Philosophy
unrestricted

Abstract:
Essay I explores brain machine interface (BMI) technologies. These make direct communication between the brain and a machine possible by means of electrical stimuli. This essay reviews the existing and emerging technologies in this field and offers a systematic inquiry into the relevant ethical problems that are likely to emerge in the following decades. Essay II, co-written with professor Sven-Ove Hansson, presents a novel procedure to engage the public in ethical deliberations on the potential impacts of brain machine interface technology. We call this procedure a Convergence seminar, a form of scenario-based group discussion that is founded on the idea of hypothetical retrospection. The theoretical background of this procedure and the results of the five seminars are presented here. Essay III discusses moral enhancement, an instance of human enhancement that alters a person’s dispositions, emotions or behavior in order to make that person more moral. Moral enhancement could be carried out in three different ways. The first strategy is behavioral enhancement. The second strategy, favored by prominent defenders of moral enhancement, is emotional enhancement. The third strategy is the enhancement of moral dispositions, such as empathy and inequity aversion. I argue that we ought to implement a combination of the second and third strategies.

QC 20121206

Abstract:
Burchett, Kyle L. "Anthropocentrism as Environmental Ethic." UKnowledge, 2016. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/philosophy_etds/12.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since the environment and nonhumanity became major ethical topics, human-centered worldviews have been blamed for all that is morally wrong about our dealings with nature. Those who consider themselves nonanthropocentrists typically assume that the West’s anthropocentric axiologies and ontologies underlie all of the environmental degradations associated with our species. On the other hand, a handful of environmental philosophers argue that anthropocentrism is perfectly acceptable as a foundation for environmental ethics. According to Bryan Norton’s convergence hypothesis, "If reasonably interpreted and translated into appropriate policies, a nonanthropocentric ethic will advocate the same [environmental] policies as a suitably broad and long-sighted anthropocentrism" (Norton 2004:11). Norton notes that although adherents to either ism may disagree about the relative importance of the various reasons they have for advocating such policies, they nevertheless share an equal commitment to protecting the environment. Because any form of anthropocentrism must fundamentally favor humanity over nonhumanity, nonanthropocentrists are nevertheless concerned that such favoritism is "nothing more than the expression of an irrational bias" (Taylor 1981:215). They reason that only a nonanthropocentric ethic can guarantee that policies do not arbitrarily favor humans when their interests conflict with those of nonhumans. I argue that critics of convergence fail to appreciate that Norton’s hypothesis is limited to ideologies that he deems "reasonable" and "suitably broad and long-sighted," or else they misapprehend what these terms imply. When it comes to ethics, nonanthropocentrists and anthropocentrists alike vary along a continuum according to whether their overriding intuitions are more aligned with individualistic or collectivistic axiologies and their associated timescales. The most unreasonable, narrow, and short-sighted ideologies are those that are the most individualistic. It is at the collective end of the continuum that Norton’s proposed convergence takes place. I defend a version of anthropocentrism that I term ecological anthropocentrism.

Alnabwani, Khaldoun. "Habermas et Derrida : divergence théorique et convergence pratique ?" Thesis, Paris 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA010621.

Full text
Abstract:
This work examines the complex relationship between Habermas and Derrida by shedding light on the shift from a less pleasant interaction in the 1980s to a rather friendly and collaborative affiliation later in an attempt to highlight comparable areas of interest as well as evaluate areas of convergence and divergence among the two great minds. Intuitively, a philosophical eye looks deep to examine to womb where thoughts are born. We lay out the scene in post WWII Germany and France, both fertile lands for such phenomena. This allows us to garner a sharper image of how the two philosophers evolved within their backgrounds and influenced one another. Two focal points, theory and practice, are covered in eight sections. We will address the Franco German quarrel of Modernity vs. Post Modernity revealing the critique so-called Modernist Habermas and supposed Post Modernist Derrida bathed one another with, and, there, we tackle the question of ideology. The later point, practice, reveals a deep assessment of the two philosophers' stances on morality, ethics, philosophy of law, and politics. We conclude with an analysis of the two's collaboration, as they share comparable fundamentals, and inspect the fruit of that effort, which achieved not only political reform but legal in the shape of a Reform of International Law

Abstract:
The dissertation is an attempt to reconstruct ethnic minority publishing media logic through an ethnographic approach. The first part is a depiction of the media, cultural, institutional scenario, where publishing practices unfold, with a specific focus on meaningful transformations provoked by both global dynamics and international migrations. The second part is a reconstruction of the debate upon ethnic media culture, or rather, an analysis of the most salient approaches and a meta-theoretical examination of the most recurring methodologies. The third part provides an insight on the process of framing with relation to the journalism, and the possibility to offer a definition of the social situation and to produce an enlargement of the concept of citizenship. The fourth part is a presentation of the ethnographic results of a research upon a sample compounded by six newsroom. Qualitative outcomes reveals a huge range of productive cultures, in which both professionalism and ethnicity are negotiated in base of the specific features of each organization. Nevertheless, ethnic minority media culture represents a privileged viewpoint from where to observe the complex dynamics affecting the contemporary mediascape in the convergence era.

Abstract:
This dissertation assesses how Islamic finance fares as an example of 'civil compromise' in Islamic law. By focusing on the Islamic project finance sector, my research examines how the industry's main stakeholders (representing faith, capital, and power) cooperate and compete to bring about this compromise through the 'Game of Islamic Bank Bargains'. The Islamic finance industry is a work in progress, and while it has made some significant strides, it is still a niche in the global conventional financial order rather than an alternative to it. It has fallen short of fulfilling its originally-stated social justice aspirations, but has provided a previously unavailable form of banking and finance for Muslims to transact, at least formalistically, in accordance with widely-believed tenets of their faith. Thus, those who hold up Islamic finance as a universal panacea or dismiss it outright as a fraud have both got it wrong. It is neither. It is, rather, a complex myriad of incentives and aspirations of a multitude of stakeholders muddled together across numerous geographies and evolving incrementally and constantly. The state of the industry is the result of how the stakeholders (the shariah scholars, lawyers, bankers, government officials, and customers) have pursued their self-interest in the Game of Islamic Bank Bargains. My research examines who are the 'winners' and 'losers' of this game, and what religious, commercial, and political factors have influenced this outcome. I assess what may incentivise the incumbent 'winners' to guide the Islamic finance industry away from a formal and legalistic approach towards one that also incorporates principles from Islamic economics. I explore how the 'losers' - whose interests are not accounted for due to their lack of sufficient financial and political clout - can sway the outcome of the game in their favour.

Full text
Abstract:
Large flows stemming from the liberalization of the media sector arose questions related to the mastery of information processing by men among whom a large majority didn’t have any knowledge of journalism. Besides, the requirements of public services and a fair distribution of broadcasting systems constituted a major concern for public policies in connection with communication. This context has brought about a new paradigm that has urged the inclusion of media regulation in the reformulation of the media policies. The regulation process which is applied in the media sector should not only protect and guarantee the appropriate operation of the system but also ensure, in case of need, a fair distribution of its action scope. Regulations systems in Africa are confronted with new challenges which they face desperately. For instance, we can cite the rapid surge of information and communication technology (ICT). It is occurring in terms of managing information flows conveyed by line media and tackling the issue of turning the process into land digital television. In the field of information and communication sciences, it is important to understand the relevance of the media regulation and conduct an analysis of its means and scope. Therefore, our main question could be raised as follows: To what extent can media regulation constitute a means to consolidate democracy? This question seems to be relevant to us when one notice conflicts of interest arising between actors of the public debate whether they belong to the public power or they are registered in political movements or in civil society. With regard to this situation, we can assume that media regulation can be considered as a proper tool for the consolidation of democracy. Owing to the fact that the regulation mode depends on the context of each country, our research scope is limited within Burkina Faso

Whiteford, Sarah. "Dividing lines, converging aims : a moral analysis of micro-regionalism in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2113.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a moral analysis of micro-regional forces in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, using the framework of the New Regionalism Approach (NRA). It presents an original contribution to the field through the addition of the Ghanaian-Ivoirian case study, as well as a unique application of Martha Nussbaum’s Capabilities Approach to the NRA. In an attempt to counter the view that borders in Africa are artificial, arbitrary and the result of colonial imposition, this research employs the Capabilities Approach, providing a narrative of both positive and negative impacts resulting from the opportunity created by borders in West Africa. The way in which the Ghanaian-Ivoirian border is used by individuals in their security strategies in the face of economic deprivation and physical threats represents a positive impact of borders. Conversely, the role of borders in the continued prevalence of human trafficking in West Africa is also questioned in this piece, providing a balanced account of the impact of borders. This research concludes that the Ghanaian-Ivoirian border presents opportunities that can be exploited to both positive and negative ends at the micro-regional level. This interpretation suggests that any complete account of borders in West Africa more broadly ought to employ a moral framework in addition to a multi-levelled scale of analysis.

Degrassi, Sandra W. "The Effect of Ethical Signals on Recruitment Outcomes: Two Studies with Convergent Results." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2009-08-7113.

Abstract:
The applicant decision making process is a complex one. During the recruitment process, signals from the organization provide information to the candidates and affect important recruitment outcomes. Ethics is one area the organization can utilize to communicate information regarding the organizational culture and environment. Drawing on signaling theory, this research suggests that ethical signals during the recruitment process affect recruitment outcomes through the mediating effect of the perception of the organization as ethical. Additionally, two important moderators, self-importance of moral identity and cognitive moral development, were examined. Using a study in the field as well as a rigorous laboratory study, this research found results generally consistent with the hypothesized relationships. Specifically, ethical organizational practices were related to attraction in both studies. Ethical recruitment practices were related to attraction in the laboratory study. Furthermore, the organizational practices/attraction relationship was partially mediated by the perception of the organization as ethical. Finally, some support was found for the cognitive moral development, self-importance of moral identity, and performance moderators. Practical implications and areas for future research are discussed.

Rico, Victor. "Exploring the convergence of sexual orientation identity, ethnic identity, cultural factors and their influence on depression, for self-identified gay and bisexual, Latino men." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-12-4616.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study examined and attempted to converge two existing models of identity, as well as provide quantitative data that support longstanding assumptions and hypotheses regarding gay and bisexual Latino men. Using contemporary models of ethnic identity and sexual orientation identity development as a conceptual framework, the study examined the convergence of these identities, the influence of cultural factors, and how this influences mental health, specifically depression. Participants were 276 self-identified gay or bisexual, Latino men, between the ages of 18-26 yrs old. Ninety three percent of the study’s sample (n = 257) self-identified as gay, where the other 7% (n = 19) self-identified as bisexual. Thirteen Latino ethnicities were represented in the sample, including, but not limited to, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Cuban, and Ecuadorian. Participants completed a demographic form, the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale (Mohr & Fassinger, 2000), the Outness Inventory (Mohr & Fassinger, 2000), the Ethnic Identity Scale (Umana-Taylor, 2003), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (Beck, Steer, & Brown 1996) and a questionnaire on Managing Multiple Identities modeled after Chen’s (2005). The results of this study indicated that gay and bisexual men do struggle with integrating the two identities, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Cultural factors such as importance of family, religion, and homophobia, appear to contribute to endorsing symptoms of depression. Results indicated that many participants of the sample also struggled with managing the conflict they experienced through the convergence of the two identities, reporting Avoidance and Not Knowing as coping strategies for managing this conflict. This study provides evidence that supports some of the longstanding assumptions and hypotheses and assists in shedding new light on identity development conceptualization, identity convergence, and identity management between two identities as it relates to self-identified gay and bisexual Latino men. Additionally, through examining the convergence of ethnic identity and sexual orientation identity, this study was able to expand on the identity development literature.
text

Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/32320.

Full text
Abstract:
Social and political ethics is the transversal horizon of the whole Work by Mons. José Policarpo. This essay on Social Moral Theology aims to show, based on the author’s thought, that the theological category of “signs of times” as well as the ethical and theological assumption of charity are elements that enable the dialogue with culture and the ethical convergence between the values of the world and the values of the Gospel, and from which social and political ethics is justified. The latter has practical and political implications, which constitute the verification criteria for the authenticity of faith. The socio-political commitment involves, thus, the practice of charity, the taking-part of the processes of social transformation, which may further what the author calls “city humanization”, by the building of justice and peace, even if the Christian eschatology is tuned to a horizon of meaning and excess which renders any historical construction provisional.
