Shao, Wei. "Going Live in a Convergent Broadcasting Newsroom: A Case Study of Al Jazeera English." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Social and Political Sciences, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4472.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine changing news practices especially at the moment of going live in a convergent broadcasting newsroom. The study chose Al Jazeera English, a leading international news network, as a case and adopted content analysis and ethnographic research methods to examine both the content and process of breaking news and live reporting. The professional practices in making breaking, live news were changed as a result of the implementation of convergent journalism in AJE’s newsroom. These changes in both news products and news production were accounted for by the interrelated influences of a set of external and internal factors at the levels of newsroom and organization.

Alzahrani, Ahmed A. "Newsroom convergence in Saudi Press organisations : a qualitative study into four newsrooms of traditional newspapers." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/16614/.

Abstract:
This is the first study of its kind about newsroom convergence and multi-skilled journalists in Saudi newspaper organisations and aimed to fill a gap in the literature about this particular issue in the Saudi context. The study investigated transformations, implications and consequences of technological convergence at four Saudi traditional newspaper organisations; Al-Madina, Alriyadh, Alyaum, and Alwatan. This thesis has explored the particular impacts of online journalistic production in traditional newspaper organisations to identify changes and perhaps challenges occurring in newspaper newsrooms. The study used the observation method in the four newsrooms and in-depth interviews with open ended questions with 60 professionals. The findings confirmed that there are ongoing transformations in the newsrooms. Yet, these transformations are challenged by regulatory, business, and cultural forces. Alyaum was the only newsroom to introduce new integrated newsroom. Journalists are observing and using new communication technologies in the workplace. However, there are difficulties in this process such as tensions in the newsrooms and shortage of qualified and trained journalists in the Saudi media market especially, multiskilled journalists. Despite embracing online and digital technology in news production and disruption, the four Saudi newspapers are still prioritising the traditional print side as it is generating more than 95 % of the annual revenue. Yet, the full integration of newsrooms between online and print newsrooms does not exist in Saudi press organisations.

Abstract:
This case study researches newsroom convergence as a process at the Mail & Guardian newspaper and their online edition the Mail & Guardian Online. It focuses on the reporters’ and editors’ attitudes towards newsroom convergence and on cultural resistance against change; one of the major challenges in the process. With structured interviews, observations and questionnaires it was analysed that communication problems between the newsrooms, different production cycles and time management issues are other prominent difficulties. The case study furthermore provides a snapshot of the convergence phenomenon as a process in a particular South African news organisation. The outcomes could not only assist other news companies with convergence plans but also be used as a pilot study for further research on converged newsrooms in South Africa.

Gu, Yu. "Strategies of newsroom convergence : comparing UK and Chinese newspaper groups." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2016. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/9w795/strategies-of-newsroom-convergence-comparing-uk-and-chinese-newspaper-groups.

Abstract:
This research examines media integration in China, choosing two Chinese newspaper groups as cases for comparative study. The study analyses the convergence strategies of these Chinese groups by reference to an Role Model of convergence developed from a literature review of studies of cases of media convergence in the UK – in particular the Guardian (GNM), Telegraph Media Group (TMG), the Daily Mail and the Times. UK cases serve to establish the characteristics, causes and consequences of different forms of convergence and formulate a model of convergence. The model will specify the levels of newsroom convergence and the sub-units of analysis which will be used to collect empirical data from Chinese News Organisations and compare their strategies, practices and results with the UK experience. The literature review shows that there is a need for more comparative studies of media convergence strategy in general, and particularly in relation to Chinese media. Therefore, the study will address a gap in the understanding of media convergence in China. For this reason, my innovations have three folds: Firstly, to develop a new and comprehensive model of media convergence and a detailed understanding of the reasons why media companies pursue differing strategies in managing convergence across a wide range of units of analysis. Secondly, this study tries to compare the multimedia strategies of media groups under radically different political systems. Since, there is no standard research method or systematic theoretical framework for the study of Newsroom Convergence, this study develops an integrated perspective. The research will use the triangulation analysis of textual, field observation and interviews to explain systematically what was the newsroom structure like in the past and how did the copy flow change and why. Finally, this case study of media groups can provide an industrial model or framework for the other media groups.

Abstract:
In the last decade journalistic transformations evidence, within the profession, inevitable changes in production, human resources and content distribution formats. Journalism today faces an unprecedented crisis, by breaking the honour of the profession values. While newspapers were closing doors in downward spiral survival issues could no longer be ignored. The press, focus of our study, seems to suffer even harder the collateral effects of this installed crisis, not only economic, but also professional and social. Internet’s culture took hold of virtues to society and among these benefits lies convergence. To understand the concept has become indispensable, especially, because it comes connoted as the salvation for journalism. All over the world the words convergence and newspapers appeared associated and it started to convert the journalistic processes towards a new way of doing, listening and reading, by allowing looking at the story possibilities and telling it. Media companies, supported on the convergence concept, began to reduce journalists and newsrooms, while the media lost its strength in credibility, research and quality contents, because everything has to do with the immediate, no time to think and act only at the news. Journalists are concerned with their decisive role that inevitably ends up influencing the consumer audience. But at the same time they give up to pressure of speedy publications, that becomes even bigger and more demanding. Where technology continues to evolve with new challenges and the professionals, facing this overwhelming mutation of habits and routines, resist. And stop. Hence the balance is not only necessary as urgent. Daily paper newsrooms are the epicentre of the hurricane, and purpose of our study, where technology, content, audience, professionals and the business models converge. This is where we question ourselves if converging practices may or may not be the solution long overdue. Through participant observation of three Portuguese newspapers - Jornal de Notícias, Diário de Notícias e Público - and a weekly - Expresso, the application of surveys and in depth interviews to directors, administration and supervisors, we wanted to deepen the debate on how convergent practices have opened doors to newspapers in the search for new audiences and how the convergence of platforms, despite the long way ahead, are now the reader’s pocket accessories, bearing simple reading and participant mobile culture. In this framework, this thesis is about the future of newspapers and the future of journalism, but the divergences that we found may be bigger than the announced convergence benefits.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivo total.pdf: 2812899 bytes, checksum: d916c0d2ea3552875c8e78cd6efcd102 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-04-27<br>Journalism has always been subject to change due to technological innovations, and two great revolutions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are given as milestones in this process: the arrival of the rotary printing press and the mass media in 1850, and the computerization in the 1970s. In contemporary times, the computerization - as part of this second movement - provides new changes in media companies, not only in relation to the management aspect and business strategies, but also with the ways of dealing with the news stories and journalistic practices. The crisis in the media industry leads companies to turn to the reduction of production costs, the professional profile is changed establishing the model, often far from reality, of the "universal journalist", from which is required a diverse editorial capacity, adaptable to any area. We have reached a new field for empirical studies, with the companies sin earch of the journalistic convergence and integrated newsroom, in a reaction to this complex scenario. There are multiple platforms for content distribution, and communication professionals try to adapt to this format. This study examines how cultural aspects configure the adoption of productive routines in the newsroom of the NIE - "Núcleo Integrado Esportivo" (Integrated Sports Core) at Rede Paraíba de Comunicação, a company comprised of radio and television stations, newspaper and news sites, based in João Pessoa, Brazil. We have, as a general goal: mapping the marks of journalistic convergence in the NIE at Rede Paraíba, focusing mainly on the professional dimension. From that, we established the following specific objectives: to get to know the available infrastructure for the work of a multimedia professional; to analyze the perceptions of journalists about the process of journalistic convergence from their work routine; to show which changes occur in the journalistic culture with the implementation of an integrated newsroom and to make a profile of the journalists working in the NIE. Besides the bibliographical research, as methodological approach, we used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, with questionnaires, participant observation and in-depth interview. Results indicate that the synergistic step in which the NIE is today is the convergence by three, according to the "media scale" as proposed by Salaverría and Negredo. We also identified the presence of the multitask journalist and some phases of the "dynamic model of convergence", notably cross-promotion, content cloning and multiplatform distribution. The creation of an integrated production core altered the productive routines of journalists, but it can be seen that the full establishment of the convergence culture is still a long way to go.<br>O jornalismo sempre esteve sujeito a transformações em função das inovações tecnológicas, e duas grandes revoluções ocorridas nos séculos XIX e XX são dadas como marcos nesse processo: a chegada da rotativa e da imprensa de massa, em 1850, e a informatização, em 1970.

Senthebane, Teboho. "An investigation of newsroom convergence at the MoAfrika media company in Lesotho and its implications for gatekeeping: a qualitative case study." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006112.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is based on a case study of MoAfrika, a news organisation that has embraced digitisation to produce and distribute content across three platforms. It draws upon observation and in-depth interviews to show how MoAfrika's embrace of a degree of convergence has led to a fragmentation for journalists whose daily work now include additional responsibilities and pressures of time. While there is an increase in the quantity of news disseminated via radio, newspaper and online, questions arise about the quality of such news produced in a multi-skilled, multiple media news production environment. The result is repurposed stories with little original content and augmented employee workloads without training and compensation. The study examines these issues drawing on theories of gatekeeping and convergence. The decision to include a news story at MoAfrika depends partly on which medium it fits into most easily. News values, deadlines, organisational norms and national trends are some of the considerations which factored into gatekeepers' decisions. Primary decision-making was made within a group which also considered expense and expertise, and where the Managing Editor made the final call and set the frameworks for how content played across the enterprise's three platforms.

Abstract:
The traditional news media is being reshaped by the phenomenon known as media convergence. This thesis, which is presented as a journalistic, multimedia website (see http://www.artsweb.aut.ac.nz/mediaconvergence), explores media convergence in New Zealand. Its primary objective is to gauge the impact of convergence on the extent to which journalism fulfils its public interest duties. To this end, the defining elements of convergence are examined, along with its driving factors and impact on day-to-day newsroom practices. The research project is based on in-depth interviews with news media experts and practitioners and the results of an industry survey. The research findings indicate that convergence poses significant risks to public interest journalism. At present, however, there is more evidence of benefits than detriments.

Abstract:
The journalistic profession is facing a time of change, experimentation and innovation. In today’s world, one of the principle driving forces behind these changes in the media is newsrooms convergence. Those involved in the teaching of journalism have to face the challenge of adapting its curriculum to these new dynamics. Are these readjustments being carried out? This research will construct a solid theoretical framework concerning the meaning of convergence and the training of a fully integrated journalist. In this thesis we analyse how this newsroom integration and media convergence is being taught within Journalism faculties in Spain. In addition a study case will be highlighted: the “Taller Integrat de Periodisme” from Pompeu Fabra University. A 24 ECTS subject that has been developed around four key axes: newsrooms’ convergence, professional simulation, the links between university and industry and internationalization.

The difficulty lies in not only the declining income, the loss of audience, but also the growing cost of making newspaper. The demand on the newspaper transition is almost inevitable. In order to understand how traditional newspaper faces the impact of digital convergence, this study examines previous literature, and tried to analyze the transition process of udn by comparing experiences from other countries. Also, we want to know the changing profession of journalists. What is the most important core ability for a journalist to survive in the future? Abstract:
No entanto, os hábitos de consumo de informação estão a mudar, sendo urgente essa adaptação para garantir a qualidade da informação local/regional.<br>Regional journalism is experiencing troubled days in the struggle for the emancipation of its media, faced with a set of constraints that call into question the full exercise of the profession. As such, new production models and new professional routines have been detected, which many have associated with the emergence of new technologies, more precisely the so-called new media. However, these new tools may not provide a solution to the problems of the regional media, after all, with the amount of constraints pointed out, how can local / regional journalism affirm itself in this new era? It is in this sense that the aim is to bring to the discussion the new practices and new concepts that have made the journalist a multifaceted professional, who lives in a multiplatform newsroom with several tools, placed at his disposal, but still seems to be unable to manage. However, information consumption habits are changing, and this adaptation is urgently needed to ensure the quality of local / regional information.
