Abstract:
In this paper we describe how to modify GSAT so that it can be applied to non-clausal formulas. The idea is to use a particular ``score'' function which gives the number of clauses of the CNF conversion of a formula which are false under a given truth assignment. Its value is computed in linear time, without constructing the CNF conversion itself. The proposed methodology applies to most of the variants of GSAT proposed so far.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the construction methods of sequences with optimal autocorrelation functions. The approaches proposed by us are to convert the known optimal sequences into the required sequences. In order to arrive at our goal, we establish two conversion formulas, and summarize their performance. The proposed methods can provide lots of candidates of spread sequences for the applications of code-division multiple-access (CDMA) spread spectrum communication systems.

Abstract:
Formulas exist in various kinds of documents with different formats. Extracting and normalizing them into a unique form are the precondition of mathematical retrieval. In this paper, an extraction and conversion method of formulas in Word documents is built for mathematical expression retrieval. Firstly, the mathematical expressions in Word documents are detected through the processing of OLE objects. Then, the matching rules of formula format conversion are defined. Finally, the extracted mathematical expressions in OMML format are converted into LaTeX format follow the defined rules and stored in a txt file. Furthermore, the formulas exist in MathType format are stored in bitmap documents and converted into LaTeX documents through formula recognition and reconstruction module. Experiments show the effectiveness of the designed approach.

Abstract:
In high energy collisions, one usually needs to give a conversion between the particle rapidity and pseudorapidity distributions. Currently, two equivalent conversion formulas are used in experimental and theoretical analyses. An investigation in the present work shows that the two conversions are incomplete. Then, we give a revision on the current conversion between the particle rapidity and pseudorapidity distributions.

Gharbi, Najwa. "Analyse sémantico-pragmatique et discursive : les formules expressives de la conversation." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020GRALL025.

Full text
Abstract:
This research deals with the study of a subset of expressive conversational formulas (FEC) (you speak, what good is it, it surprises me) apprehended from the angle of their analysis and description syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discursive. This study examines complex questions such as the terminology chosen, semantic values, syntactic behavior, the role of context or pragmatic workings. We also propose to reflect on the status of FECs in lexicography, which allows them to better understand their description in relation to what general and specialized dictionaries offer. We conducted this study in four stages. First, on a theoretical level, we have presented a synthesis of existing work by showing the difficulties of a terminological and definitional nature linked to this linguistic phenomenon for which a delimitation is required. For our part, we have chosen the term expressive formula and we have justified our choice through the selection of criteria allowing to define this notion. Subsequently, from a methodological point of view, the study takes the approach of corpus linguistics in a qualitative and quantitative approach. It is based on corpora considered in several settings: written (literature - tweets) and and oral (Orféo). After presenting the theoretical and methodological framework, we proceeded to the concrete study through the discursive analysis of FECs in two different sub-corpora. The primary objective of this study is to arrive at well-defined criteria limiting this subclass of pragmatic phraseologisms compared to the other subtypes proposed by researchers in this linguistic field. Finally, we proposed the lexicographic treatment of certain formulas selected within the framework of the Polonium project. The challenge here is to arrive at a functional lexicographic model for the lexicographic processing of FEC.We believe that we have succeeded in achieving the challenges that we set ourselves at the start. Through a discursive analysis of the FECs in the text, we wanted to refine the defining features and opt for an exhaustive definition of this subset. By examining their status in the field of lexicography, we have retained a detailed and promising descriptive method of FECs

Abstract:
Native speakers often ignore the limitless potential of language and stick to institutionalized formulaic sequences. These sequences are stored and processed as wholes, rather than as the individual words and grammatical rules which make them up. Due to research on formulaic sequence in spoken language, English as a Second Language / Foreign Language pedagogy has begun to follow suit. There has been a call for a shift from the traditional focus on isolated grammar and vocabulary to formulaic sequences and context. I tested this hypothesis with 19 L2 English learners who received 5 weeks of task-based instruction and found substantial progress in oral fluency only for the experimental group. Differences between pretest and posttest oral fluency were examined by looking at the learners' speech rate and their mean length of run. Subjective evaluation of fluency by 16 native English judges confirmed the calculated measures.

Abstract:

Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE2093.

Full text
Abstract:
Our research pertains to the field of interactional linguistics. It presents a study of compliments exchanged during conversations that occurred over the course of visits between friends in France and in Vietnam. It deals more particularly to reactions to compliments, as well as with the question of the participants' faces, which falls under the notion of linguistic politeness. Based on audiovisual data that were recorded during spontaneous conversations, we have collected a wide range of occurrences in French and Vietnamese, and proposed a detailed transcript of selected excerpts, taking into consideration verbal productions and multimodality. Using an intercultural and comparative approach, we have produced an interactional and multimodal analysis, which allowed us to point out the convergences and the divergences in the ways compliments are made and how participants from both countries react to them. These descriptions rely onverbal as well as multimodal resources used by participants in both their evaluative and reactive turns. The first part of our study describes the specifics of the various types of compliments identified in each corpus. The second part deals more specifically with the reactions to compliments. It highlights the discursive strategies that are used by interlocutors in order to reconcile two diverging conversational principles –agreement and modesty. The studied responses show on the one hand some similarities between the two languages in terms of linguistic expression of politeness, and on the otherhand a significant divergence.Conversations in the Vietnamese corpus tend to be lengthened, while in the French corpus they are likely to be shortened

Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020MON30038.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis aims to develop two sections: A)The comparison of discursive behaviors in business negotiations between two parties: One is within the same culture and the other is in intercultural context. The data I present are all authentic transcriptions including of six business face-to-face negotiations: 2 negotiations spoken by native speakers in Mandarin Chinese, 2 negotiations spoken by native speakers in French and two negotiations spoken by native French, Chinese or Taiwanesein English as a language of communication. The corpus involve three languages and two cultures (Chinese and French). My first question is to see the impact of the usage of different languages during the process of negotiation. In continuation of the tradition of Sapir hypothesis - Whorf (Sapir 1949 and Whorf 1956) and the pragmatic analysis of verbal exchanges (Wierrzbicka, 1991; Peeters, 2009; Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 1994), presented how the language reflects the culture. With an analysis of certain linguistic characteristics, I analyze verbal interactions such as the constructions of speech turns (Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson, 1974), speech acts in connection with the theory of face (Goffman, 1993; Brown and Levinson 1978) and the interpersonal relationship (Kerbrat-Orecchioni 1994,2001,2002). My questions are: Does the negotiation interaction (Kerbrat-Orecchioni 1990, 1992.1994) differ from one language (L1) to another( L2) (L1: Chinese or French and L2: English) between two cultures? Do the negotiators use another type of ritual politeness (Béal, 2010) in L2 than in their mother tongue? Mono-cultural and inter-cultural comparison allows us to confirm these questions and also help determine to what extent of connections with their own culture by using L1 and L2 for the negotiators. B)More specifically, I’d like to establish the analytical model of offers in the business negotiation in two cultures (French and Chinese). The progress, results and decision-making in negotiation, are the important moments which allow us to see the two interlocutors if they reach their consensus or fail the cooperation. In this study, I take the assumption is that the result or final decision of the negotiation is related to proposal of interactional offers. . Although some researchers present the negotiation strategies (eg, Hammer and Yukl 1977, Roth and Murnighan 1982; Maynard 1984; Tutzauer 1992), there were few empirical studies related to the negotiation offers in conversation analysis including speech acts such as promises and commitments. My study is to fill up this gap. In business negotiations, the acts of deals between buyer and seller represent an exchange of economic value with a product or service. The acts of offer s have strong sense of performatives ( assertives and commissives) (Searle, 1972). My questions are: Does it exist another form of commitment instead of exchange of the economic value? For example: a promise for future cooperation or building up interpersonal relationship? This research deals with certain verbal features such turn-takings, the motivation of overlaps or interruptions during the exchange. A major objective of this study is to develop an analytical model that can be used to describe the nature of offers in business negotiations at different levels of discourse between the two cultures. Based on the authentic corpus, I try to light on the strateg(ies)of offers in business negotiation. The study is essentially analyzed with the method of linguistic pragmatics and also adopts a quantitative and qualitative comparative approach. The theory of speech acts plays a major role in the definition of “offers” identifying implementation strategies. At the same time, this research is interdisciplinary which relates to the economy, international trade, intercultural management, and sociology

Existing works on energy harvesting wireless systems often assume a constant conversion efficiency for the energy harvester. In practice, the conversion efficiency often varies with the input power. In this work, based on a review of existing energy harvesters in the literature, a heuristic expression for the conversion efficiency as a function of the input power is derived by curve fitting. Using this function, two example energy harvesters are used to analyze the realistic performances of wireless relaying and wireless energy transfer. Numerical results show that the realistic performances of the wireless systems could be considerably different from what predicted by the existing analysis.

Abstract:
The following thesis analyses the form and importance of extreme case formulations based on more than 10 research interviews. Extreme case formulations, i.e. formulations comprising expressions such as "nothing", "everything" or "noone", which present a phenomenon or a circumstance according to its minimal or maximal properties, can constitute a complication in the analysis of research interviews. This thesis expand the existing hypothesis of extreme case formulations by adding new findings, for example the bipolarity of extreme case formulations. In the analysed data, these do often occur together with different clasifiers, which either weaken (softeners) or strengthen (intensifiers) their extreme force. At the same time the following thesis broadens the research of extreme case formulations of interdisciplinary approach, which uses the findings from psychology and rhetoric. The conducted research is furthermore completed with the acoustic analysis of semantically extreme formulations, whose results show that extreme case formulations often tend to be acoustically emphasized. Keywords: extreme case formulation, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, interview, Czech

Abstract:
Abstract The recent deployments of semantic web tools and the expansion of available linked datasets have given users the opportunity of building increasingly complex applications. These emerging use cases often require queries containing mathematical formulas such as euclidean distances or unit conversions. Currently, the latest SPARQL standard (version 1.1) only embeds basic math operators. Thus, to address this shortcoming, some popular SPARQL evaluators provide built-in tools to cover specific needs; however, such tools are not standard yet. To offer users a more generic solution, we propose and share MINDS, a translator of mathematical expressions into SPARQL-compliant bindings which can be understood by any evaluator. MINDS thereby facilitates the query design whenever mathematical computations are needed in a SPARQL query.

Abstract:
Regression formulas are developed in order to predict the critical compressive strain of X80 linepipes subjected to pure bending. The regression formulas were derived using an analytical solution and two conversion functions. The analytical solution was previously proposed to calculate the critical compressive strain of a pipe subjected to axial compression, where hardening properties are taken into account. The original analytical solution was rewritten to include a strain-hardening exponent. Two conversion functions are defined to connect two critical compressive strains of a pipe under different loading conditions. One is a pressure-effect conversion function which connects two critical compressive strains of a pipe without and with internal pressure, respectively. The other is a compression-bending conversion function which also connects two critical compressive strains of a pressurized pipe which is subjected to compression and bending. The regression formulas were obtained using the improved analytical solution and the two conversion functions. The regression formulas yield good agreement with FEA results especially for high-strain linepipes.

Abstract:
Abstract Four fundamental forms for representing rigid body motion, i.e. the rotation-of-vector form, the matrix form, the quaternion form and the screw form, all based on the conventional concept that motion is specified by the movement of a reference point together with an orientation change, are expounded. The inter-relationships among these forms are elucidated. The geometric images of these representation-forms, i.e. the motion mappings, are explained, and an innovative duplex-mapping, a powerful tool for mobility analysis of multi-loop mechanisms and robots, is introduced. An exotic motion representation, based on a concept totally different from the conventional concept, is described. This is a purely geometric representation, a representation by a pair of conjugate curves on respective conjugate surfaces, and is called the conjugation form of motion representation. The conversion from the conjugation form to the rotation-of-vector form and the inverse conversion are described. These conversions, which constitute the essential and featured contents of the Theory of Conjugate Surfaces, have great potential applications in motion design for numerically controlled manufacturing and in surface generation by numerically controlled manufacturing. The basis equations for the conversions, i.e. the three relationship-equations, are deduced. The fundamental equation conjugation, the four conjugato-kinematic entities and the five differential formulas for the inverse conversion are derived.

In ASME 2015 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2015-45747.

Abstract:
Both Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact energy and fracture toughness are parameters reflecting toughness of the material. Charpy tests are however easy to perform compared to standard fracture toughness tests, especially when the material is irradiated and quantity is limited. Correlations between the two parameters are therefore of great significance, especially for reactor pressure vessel (RPV) structural integrity assessment. In this paper, correlations between CVN impact energy and fracture toughness of three commonly used RPV steels, namely Chinese A508-3 steel, USA A533B steel, Euro 20MnMoNi55 steel, are investigated with two methods. One method applies a direct conversion using empirical formulas and the other adopts the Master Curve method. It is found that when the empirical formula is used, the difference between the predicted fracture toughness (from the CVN impact energy) and actual test data is relatively small in upper shelf, lower shelf and the bottom of transition region, while relatively large in other parts of the transition region. When the Master Curve method is adopted, whether the reference temperature T0 is estimated through temperature at 28J or 41J CVN impact energy, the predicted fracture toughness values of the three steels are consistent with actual test data. The reference temperature T0 is also estimated through the IGC-parameter correlation and through a combination of empirical formula and multi-temperature method. Both procedures show excellent agreement with test results. The mean value of T0 estimated from T28J, T41J, IGC-parameters and the combination method is denoted by TQ-ave and is then used as the final reference temperature T0 for the Master Curve determination. Accuracy of TQ-ave (and therefore the Master Curve method) is demonstrated by comparison with actual test data of the three RPV steels. It is concluded that Master Curve method provides a reliable procedure for predicting fracture toughness in the transition region utilizing limited CVN impact energy data from open literature.

Abstract:
As a kind of unconventional gas reservoirs, shale gas reservoirs are full of potential to develop and have attracted global attention. Accompanying the exploiting of shale gas, a large amount of drilling cuttings contaminated by the oil-based drilling fluid are generated inevitably. How to deal with the drilling cuttings in a environmental-friendly way is tough especially for offshore oilfield. So it is important to investigate this aspect deeply and develop methods to clean the contaminated drilling cuttings. As is known to all, the thermal desorption technology has outstanding performance in oily cuttings cleaning. This paper bases on a kind of mechanical-thermal cuttings cleaning apparatus where the contaminated drilling cuttings are heated up by friction heat produced by the friction between the cuttings and the agitating vanes. And the harmful substance is separated from the cuttings in the agitated and high temperature flow field. This thesis investigates the fundamental of the energy conversion in the frictional process, infer formulas analyzing the thermo-physical phenomena and quantitatively model the energy conversion and thermal transmission accompanying the friction. Firstly, the principle of heat transfer and the law of conservation of energy are employed to investigate the natural law of the energy conversion in the frictional process. Based on the investigation, taking the liquid bridge between the oily cuttings and the agitating vane into account, this paper deduces the physical equations and the frictional energy model to calculate the total frictional heat, heat density and temperature distribution. Following up the frictional model, in the Eulerian-Lagrangian coupling framework, this paper develops a parallel numerical platform of computational fluid dynamics combined with discrete element method (CFD-DEM). In the coupling approach, the gas motion is solved at the computational grid level while the solid motion is resolved at the particle-scale level. Furthermore, the coupling approach is extended with the frictional energy model. The numerical platform can calculate the dense gas-solid motion in the fluidizing apparatus, the convective heat transfer between gas and solid phase, and the conductive heat transfer between particles. Based on the platform, the mechanical-thermal energy conversion and the convective heat transfer between gas and oily cuttings, and the conductive heat transfer between cuttings and the agitating vanes are investigated. Meanwhile an experiment is conducted. By comparing the numerical results with the experiment data, the paper can come to the conclusion that how to dispose the nonlinear parameters such as the friction contact area, the friction coefficient and the normal pressure is the key to accurately model the energy conversion and the heat transmission. What’s more, it can be understood that the convective heat transfer between gas and solid phase play an important role in the heat transmission.

In ASME 2018 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2018-88228.

Full text
Abstract:
The inverse Langevin function has a crucial role in different research fields, such as polymer physics, para- or superpara-magnetism materials, molecular dynamics simulations, turbulence modeling, and solar energy conversion. The inverse Langevin function cannot be explicitly derived and thus, its inverse function is usually approximated using rational functions. Here, a generalized approach is proposed that can provide multiple approximation functions with a different degree of complexity/accuracy for the inverse Langevin function. While some special cases of our approach have already been proposed as approximation function, a generic approach to provide a family of solutions to a wide range of accuracy/complexity trade-off problems has not been available so far. By coupling a recurrent procedure with current estimation functions, a hybrid function with adjustable accuracy and complexity is developed. Four different estimation families based four estimation functions are presented here and their relative error is calculated with respect to the exact inverse Langevin function. The level of error for these simple and easy-to-use formulas can be reduced as low as 0.1%.

Abstract:
Co-utilization of solid fuels with combustion turbines (CTs) can be accomplished by blending feedstocks in indirectly heated gasifier/liquifiers (IHG/L), Blending could improve the quality and yields of gaseous and liquid fuel outputs and, with gas clean-up (GCU) or liquid distillation, serve valuable societal functions. Gas yields vs. temperature, time and other variables have been obtained using batch fed and continuous fed laboratory scale IHG/Ls using particle sizes suitable for commercial systems. The rates of solids to gas/liquid conversion are mainly dependent upon the heat transfer and diffusion coefficients of the biomass rather than the rate constants for chemical decomposition. Phenomenological engineering formulas are developed for use with biomass that can be treated as a blend of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. The main immediate goals are to develop: 1) laboratory scale process development units (PDUs) that can help anticipate results with commercial IHG/L systems, 2) predictive models for estimating gaseous, liquid and char yields when various blends of biomass and other domestic fuels are processed in IHG/Ls and 3) applications of IHG-GCU-CT systems that could drive technology development during periods of low oil and natural gas prices.

Abstract:
Through analyzing the change in velocity triangles at the inlet and exit of pump impeller with blade adjusting, and the flow behaviors in the pump passage the pump blade adjusting formulae were derived which reflect the similarity of flow and pumping head with the blade angles adjusted. Based on the experimental data of pump performances a mathematical model was developed to calculate the flow index and head index of the formulae. The objective function is a minimized the least square sum of the errors of the formulae’s calculation and the test data. The formulae were applied to three model pumps. The results show that the errors between calculated and measured data are 0.0228, 0.0116%, 0.0123 respectively, and all the head-flow curves (H-Q) and the power-flow curves (P-Q) agree well with the measured data from model test. Therefore, the derived formulae are featured with good similarity in pump performances for change blade angle, which can be applicable to the performances conversion and prediction of pump with blade adjusting.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents an optimization approach to design ax-isymmetric wave energy converters (WECs) based on a nonlinear hydrodynamic model. This paper shows optimal nonlinear shapes of buoy can be generated by combing basic shapes in an optimal sense. The time domain non-linear Froude-Krylov force can be computed for a complex buoy shape, by adopting analytical formulas of its basic shape components. The time domain Forude-Krylov force is decomposed into its dynamic and static components, and then contribute to the calculation of the excitation force and the hydrostatic force. A non-linear control is assumed in the form of the combination of linear and nonlinear damping terms. A variable size genetic algorithm (GA) optimization tool is developed to search for the optimal buoy shape along with the optimal control coefficients simultaneously. Chromosome of the GA tool is designed to improve computational efficiency and to leverage variable size genes to search for the optimal non-linear buoy shape. Different criteria of wave energy conversion can be implemented by the variable size GA tool. Simulation results presented in this paper show that it is possible to find non-linear buoy shapes and non-linear controllers that take advantage of non-linear hydrodynamics to improve energy harvesting efficiency with out adding reactive terms to the system.
