Abstract:
Power electronic converters are widely used in wind energy conversion system (WECS) applications. Therefore, with the increasing manufacturing capacity of multi-MW wind generators, multi-level converters, or parallel configuration of converters are becoming more attractive solutions towards DC collection from the wind generator. Among the multilevel converters, three-level full-scale neutral point diode clamped (3L-NPC) converter are using extensively for such applications in order to reduce the voltage stress on the semiconductor devices. In this article, a comparative study based on several devices used by NPC, capacitor clamped (CC) as well as Vienna rectifier has been done. Furthermore, their estimated cost comparison and complexity of control switches have been debated. By keeping in view the merits and demerits of these rectifiers, a low cost three-level active rectifier having a smaller number of active switches with a simple control scheme have been implemented. Considering a three-phase electric grid as a generated source, a 2.2KW low-cost three-level Vienna rectifier is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. DSP (TMS320F28335) based experimental results ratify the simulated circuit with THD<5%.

Abstract:
Recently, high power-density, high power-efficiency, and wide regulation range isolated DC-DC converters have been required. This paper presents considerations of physical design and implementation for wide regulation range MHz-level LLC resonant DC-DC converters. The circuit parameters are designed with 3–5 MHz-level switching frequency. Also, the physical parameters and the size of the planar transformer are optimized by using derived equations and finite element method (FEM) with Maxwell 3D. Some experiments are done with prototype LLC resonant DC-DC converter using gallium nitride high electron mobility transistors (GaN-HEMTs); the input voltage is 42–53 V, the reference output voltage is 12 V, the load current is 8 A, the maximum switching frequency is about 5 MHz, the total volume of the circuit is 4.1 cm3, and the power density of the prototype converter is 24.4 W/cc.

Abstract:
The applications of Multilevel Converter (MLC) are increased because of the huge demand for clean power; especially these types of converters are compatible with the renewable energy sources. In addition, these new types of converters have the capability of high voltage and high power operation. A Nine-level converter in three modes of implementation; Diode Clamped-MLC (DC-MLC), Capacitor Clamped-MLC (CC-MLC), and the Modular Structured-MLC (MS-MLC) are analyzed and simulated in this paper. Various types of Multicarrier Modulation Techniques (MMTs) (Level shifted (LS), and Phase shifted (PS)) are used for operating the proposed Nine level - MLCs. Matlab/Simulink environment is used for the simulation, extracting, and analysis the results. Finally, a comparison is made between the results for all topologies that are implemented regarding to the criteria of the output voltage waveforms harmonic distortion factor, No. of the necessitated power components, and the complexity of each circuit. Based on simulation results, the MS-MLC is finer as compared to the other types of MLCs. It also observed that the MLCs (with three types) using Phase Opposition Disposition (POD) technique is performed better in terms of getting greater fundamental output voltage and lower THD% as compared to the other techniques.

Abstract: The DC-DC converters have important applications in the electric energy generation using renewable energy sources and in the electric vehicles. In those applications, it is often required that the converter operates with high voltage gain. This work investigates some non-insulated topologies of DC-DC converters that can be used when high voltage gain is necessary or convenient. One of the studied topologies, the six-phase interleaved double dual boost, is used to demonstrate the design and control techniques. Experimental results for this converter are presented.

Abstract:
This work presents the analysis and practical implementation of the three-phase resonant series CC-CC converter operating in ZCS mode. The structure of this converter has been modified in order to generate a DC bus insulated at high frequency with symmetrically divided voltages. Based on the theory of multipulse rectifiers, the Graetz bridge of the output stage of the DC-DC converter has been replaced by two full-bridge three-phase rectifiers connected in series. The isolating transformer also needed changes, in the sense of feeding these rectifiers in isolation, giving independence to the operation of the same. As a result, each of the rectifier outputs was stapled to a voltage proportional to the drive voltage, without the use of controllers. In this respect, the objective of generating a symmetrical bus, suitable for feeding NPC multilevel inverters, was fully satisfied. It has been shown that the strategy of generating a bus with symmetrically divided voltages can be extended to inverters with more than three levels, in the case of the NPC. All theoretical results were confirmed by the implementation of a 2 kW prototype that achieved an efficiency of over 95%.

This work deals with the Switched Affine Systems, particularly with their performance and state observation. Initially, a state-of-the-art review was developed, where an important point was raised on the possibility of absence of equilibrium points. This way, the stability concept was slightly modified. Then, geometrical questions were studied for the Switched Linear Systems and, subsequently extended for the Switched Affine Systems. Those geometrical questions allowed the verification of switching law alterations in such a way that their performance was enhanced. Thereofore, with the guaranteed convergence rate insertion in the existent LinearMatrix Inequalities in previous works, performance parameters to be increased were established. Following, a switching law composition method was proposed through two techniques: the Switched Quadratic Lyapunov Function and the Lyapunov Function with Switched Attractors. That composition showed itself efficient in a search for a better trade-off between conflicting performance parameters and, in fact, it may simultaneously enhance them. Finally, a technique for state observation in Switched Affine Systems was proposed: the Switched Luenberger Observer. This observer was analysed for the cases of state reconstruction, observer-based control and observer-based control in the presence of non-Hurwitz modes. For the first case, Linear Matrix Inequalities relaxations were proposed through the usage of the Reciprocal Projection Lemma and the Finsler’s Lemma. Yet, a norm optimization of the output gain matrices was achieved through the usage of Linear Matrix Inequalities applied to the Frobenius norm of those matrices. All the study was done with applications to the control of DC-DC converters, immediate examples of the Switched Affine Systems theory, given their nature

The emulator is composed of a power supply capable of delivering voltages and currents whose behavior resembles the behavior of a photovoltaic array. The structure of this power supply consists of a three-phase full-bridge DC-DC converter. This high frequency isolated converter provides a smaller volume and ensures safety for laboratory equipment. This work can be applied to test photovoltaic inverters with MPPT methods and dynamic responses up to 300Hz. The control strategy is based on the numerical solution of the mathematical model of a photovoltaic cell from which is extracted a reference current to the control of the emulator. The methodology applied to design the proposed power supply is also presented. Finally, the design, simulation, and practical results of the emulator are shown to prove its operation.

Abstract:
Reliability of data transmission is a fundamental problem in wireless communications. Fading in wireless channels causes the signal strength to vary at the receiver and this results in loss of data packets. To improve the reliability, automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes were introduced. However these ARQ schemes suffer from a reduction in the throughput. To address the throughput reduction, conventional ARQ schemes were combined with forward error correction (FEC) schemes to develop hybrid-ARQ (HARQ) schemes. For improving the reliability of data transmission, HARQ schemes are included in the wireless standards like LTE, LTE-Advanced and WiMAX. Conventional HARQ systems use the same transmission power in different ARQ rounds. However this is not optimal in terms of minimizing the average energy spent for successful transmission of a data packet. In this book chapter, the recent research results related to HARQ systems are reviewed first. Next, optimal resource allocation in HARQ systems with a limit on the maximum number of allowed transmissions for a data packet is considered in the next part. Specifically, the problem of minimizing the rate-outage probability under a constraint on average energy consumption per data packet for both incremental redundancy (IR)-based and Chase combining (CC)-based HARQ systems is considered. Towards solving the optimization problems, the expressions for rate-outage probability of both IR-HARQ and CC-HARQ systems in i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels is provided. Methods to solve the optimization problems using nonlinear optimization techniques are discussed. To reduce the complexity of finding a solution, the rate-outage probability expressions are approximated, using which, the non-convex optimization problems are converted into geometric programming problems (GPPs), for which the closed-form solutions are derived. Illustrative and analytical results show that the proposed power allocation provides significant gains in energy savings over the traditional equal power allocation transmission, and the closed-form GPP solution can provide a performance close to that of the exact method for smaller values of rate-outage probability.

Abstract:
Many chemical reactions go to completion; i.e., all the reactants are converted to products. A good example is the reaction of calcium with cold water. . . Ca(s)+2 H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(s)+ H2(g) . . . There is no evidence that the reverse reaction occurs. Such reactions are said to be irreversible. On the other hand, many reactions are reversible: the process can be made to go in the opposite direction. This means that both the reactants and products will be present at any given time. A reversible reaction is defined as one in which the products formed can react to give the original reactants. A double arrow is used to indicate that the reaction is reversible, as illustrated by the general equation:. . . aA+bB ⇌ cC +dD. . . At the start of the reaction, the reactants convert more quickly to products than products turn back to reactants because the reactants are present in much greater amount. Eventually the concentration of products is sufficient for the reverse reaction to become significant. The reaction is said to reach equilibrium when the net change in the products and reactants is zero, i.e., the rate of forward reaction equals the rate of reverse reaction. Chemical equilibria are dynamic equilibria because, although nothing appears to be happening, opposing reactions are occurring at the same rate. Figure 17-1 illustrates that for a reaction in chemical equilibrium, the rate of forward reaction equals the rate of reverse reaction. When a chemical reaction is at equilibrium, the concentrations of reactants and products are constant. The relationship between the concentrations of reactants and products is given by the equilibrium expression, also known as the law of mass action. For the general reaction:. . . aA+bB cC +dD. . . at a constant temperature, the equilibrium constant expression is written as: Kc = [C]c[D]d/[A]a[B]b where [A], [B], [C], and [D] are the molar concentrations or partial pressures of A,B,C, and D at equilibrium. The exponents a,b, c, and d in the equilibrium expression are the coefficients in the balanced equation; Kc is the equilibrium constant and is not given units. The subscript c shows that K is in terms of concentration. The numerical value for Kc is usually determined experimentally.

Abstract:
The market of electronic products such as mobile phones and portable devices grows rapidly while the demand of lithium battery for fast charge, long duration, and long life cycle increases significantly as well. There are several charge methods for lithium battery, such as constant current (CC)/constant voltage (CV) charge [1], pulse charge [2] and reflex charge [3], etc. In general, a flyback converter has been widely adopted as the front-end converter of battery charger due to its low-cost, wide power range, and galvanic isolation between input and output stage. The battery charge controller with flyback converter has been developed in digital control with opto-coupler feedback [4]–[6]. The conventional flyback converter with CC or CV applications always requires two sensed ADC channels for regulating [7]–[9]. An improved control method is proposed in this study to achieve CC/CV by only one ADC channel. This study presents a battery charge mechanism with a flyback converter and associated trickle charge method for the temperature compensation. The PSR is adopted for switching the charge modes within trickle current (TC), constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV). The TC charging method is used to avoid the rapid increase in the temperature of the battery which is based on the characteristics of the internal resistance of the battery [10]. The proposed system circuit contains two stages in topology. The first stage is a front-end flyback converter which operates in DC-DC discontinuous current mode (DCM) by using PSR to sense the output voltage from auxiliary winding. It is adopted to replace the opto-coupler for avoiding temperature limitation for operations and reducing cost. The software Powersim is used to simulate the proposed flyback converter and PSR method. The second stage is the digital feedback loop, which processes the controlled signal by a digital processor (DSP) TMS320F2812. The experimental results were compared with general CC/CV method. The results show favorable performance of the propose charging method.

Abstract:

Abstract:
I. C. Engines consume large amounts of fossil fuel emitting harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), unburnt hydrocarbons (UBHC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). By using a catalytic converter (CC), the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon emissions can be transformed into less harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) & water vapor (H2O). Currently available CC’s are using costly noble metals like platinum (pt), palladium (pd), rhodium (rh) etc., hence making them expensive. This paper deals with the use of low-cost palletized silver coated alumina as the catalyst element in a CC. In this study, alumina and silver were used in the ratio of 10:1. All tests have been conducted on a stationary S.I. Engine at a constant speed of 1500 r.p.m with and without CC. Also, the performance of the palletized CC in combination with promoters like Bismuth, Cerium and Lanthanum was tested which have shown better results than silver alone as the coating element. It has been experimentally determined that the CO emissions have dropped from 7.25 (% vol) to 3.03(% vol) and the HC values have reduced from 350 ppm to 190 ppm.

Abstract:
A 2009 Volkswagen Jetta was tested using a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) SemtechD emissions analyzer to determine when the emissions and fuel consumption will be the smallest in regards to startup vs. idle emissions. An idle time equivalent was calculated to determine when idle emissions became equal to startup emissions at four different ambient temperatures for a cold start. The mass of Total Hydrocarbons (THC) emitted limited the idle time equivalent to less than the startup time for all ambient temperatures. The temperature of the Catalytic Converter (CC) was monitored to determine how quickly the car cools down and therefore, how beneficial it is to turn the car off after a certain time period. For the temperature range tested, it was more beneficial for reduced emissions to turn off the car compared to idling by a factor of at least four. The data suggests a trend that idling would never be the best option; however, more testing needs to be done with a greater range of CC cool down temperatures to confirm this initial assessment.
