Abstract:
This thesis studies the linear and nonlinear dynamics of pipes conveying fluid. It consists of four peer-reviewed journal papers, three published and one submitted for publication. The aim is to investigate aspects of the dynamical behaviour of extensible and inextensible pipes conveying fluid, both theoretically and experimentally. In particular, (i) the three-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of a pipe conveying fluid, constrained by an array of four springs attached at a point along its length is examined from the theoretical and experimental perspectives; (ii) the three-dimensional dynamical b

Roberts, Jacob Thomas. "Splitting techniques in vertical pneumatic conveying." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13593/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following work details an investigation into improving efficiency in pulverised-fuel- fired power stations. The particular area of focus is the splitter box; this is located in the pneumatic conveying pipeline within the power station. The conveying pipelines take the pulverised fuel from the mill to the burner face, at some point the air/fuel mixture has to be split to feed the individual burners. It is at these points that the splitter boxes occur, dividing the pipe into multiple legs. It is common for some of these splits to produce poor fuel balance between legs, leading to excess air

Abstract:
This thesis examines the planar dynamics of flexible pipes conveying fluid. The nonlinear equations of motion are derived for cantilevered pipes and for simply-supported pipes, using Hamilton's principle and the force balance method. The resulting equations are compared with previous derivations.<br>The linearized system is first studied, to get the critical parameters corresponding to the stability boundaries, i.e. the local bifurcations. Then, the nonlinear equations are investigated, both analytically and numerically. Centre manifold, normal form and bifurcation theories are used to obtain

Bradley, Michael S. A. "Prediction of pressure losses in pneumatic conveying pipelines." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 1990. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/14606/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project arose out of a need to improve the accuracy with which the pressure drop along pneumatic conveying pipelines in process plant could be predicted. The methods previously available for making this prediction are examined and critically assessed. The need for a different method is shown, and a new approach is developed and tested. The new approach involves testing of the product to be conveyed, in a test pipeline at the smaller end of the industrial scale, with measurements being made of the pressure drop caused by bends and of the pressure gradients in straight lengths; the data is

Kessel, Stephen Ronald. "The interaction between rotary valves and pneumatic conveying pipelines." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 1985. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/9292/.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this work was to investigate the interaction between rotary valves and pneumatic conveying pipelines and the effect which this can have on overall system performance. A review of previous work and current industrial practice revealed that very little work has been published on this subject, although it was evident that some manufacturers of pneumatic conveying systems do have preferred entrainment configurations. Consequently, a preliminary experimental investigation was undertaken with a transparent model of a rotary valve and drop-out box in order to observe the air and solid f

Full text
Abstract:
This study was initiated by the need to improve current techniques used in the design of pneumatic conveying systems. At present, the commonly used method to predict the pressure drop in a vertical pipeline in a pneumatic conveying system is to obtain the pressure gradient in a horizontal for the identical conveying conditions and double the pressure gradient in the horizontal pipeline to give the pressure gradient in the vertical pipeline. In addition, scaling for pipeline bore in vertical pipelines is simply undertaken by considering the change in cross-sectional area. This is another area w

The general context of the research is first provided by broadly introducing the field of Fluid-Structure Interactions (FSI) and reviewing the basic theory regarding pipes conveying fluid. Interest in the use of dense phase conveying has grown considerably in recent years.
