The method of plan analysis developed by M. R. G. Conzen is employed in part of the core of Guangzhou, China. Though the main concern is with the urban ground plan, links are made to two other interdependent components of the townscape or urban landscape: building fabric and land use. Physical changes in the townscape are divided into morphological stages between feudal times and the present day. The geographical structure of the built-up area is explained in terms of morphogenetic types of plan units that express key facets of economic and social processes. The scientific heritage of M. R. G. Conzen, who is considered one of the most outstanding historical geographers and urban morphologists in the world, has made a huge impact on the contemporary urban historic morphology. Nowadays it would be very hard to imagine this scientific discipline without his achievements. He created a new point of view on the city, first within the Anglo-Saxon, and afterwards within European and world geography. The field of urban morphology cannot be separated from the research of M.R.G. Conzen. For decades, Jeremy W.R. Whitehand wrote extensively about how M.R.G. Conzen became an urban morphologist and then laid further foundations for what would become the historico-geographical approach within the field. Recently, a paper published in this journal explored how Whitehand developed his own commitment to urban morphology. This paper reveals a third explicit ‘corner’ of an early triangle in the Conzenian school ‒ Michael P. Conzen. By tracing his intellectual journey, the article exposes a lifelong cu

Introduction: The historical city core of Istanbul developed under the influence of the religions and cultures that were brought in during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. This study investigates the effect that the 19th-century modernization, urban arrangements, road system changes, and sociocultural textures had on urban morphology on the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul, which had symbolic value. We review the morphology of Istanbul during the 19th century, a historical period when the city was undergoing new development and restructurization. We also develop an analysis methodolo

Until recently Chinese and European approaches to the study of historical urban form have differed markedly. Here a comparison is made of the historico-geographical development of the ground plans of the walled cities of Como, Italy and Pingyao, China. Adopting a largely Conzenian approach previously mainly employed in Europe, considerable use is made of field surveys and series of large-scale plans to map patterns of change over time in streets, plots and the ground plans of buildings. In both cities, series of planned developments over some 2000 years have left major physical legacies that h

AbstractColonial cities in Asia and Africa, developed under the dual influence of native and sovereign cultures during the colonial era, exhibit unique urban morphological characteristics and reflect the planning ideologies of diverse cultures. Thus, the morphological study of colonial cities in Asia and Africa is crucial for understanding and identifying the historical and cultural value of these cities, which in turn enables the formulation of precise conservation strategies. Cities are in a continuous process with the change and re-adaptation of different parts. Cities are deliberately planned under different socio-economic, natural, religious, and political conditions in different historical periods. While cities are growing, new urban projects are planned that will affect urban morphology. Thus, the research problem is that new urban design projects require planning and integrated policy in interaction with the city. One of the aspects of ensuring this is examining the city from the historical point of view and comprehending urban morphology analysis. Within thi
