Germeck, Karl. "“Speaking With” the Ravine: Representation and Memory in Five Cultural Productions of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/867.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the rich and layered intertextual relationship between five artisticrepresentations of the razed neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles, and its former residents. These works include Seattle-based photographer Don Normark’s 1999 photography collection Chávez Ravine, 1949: A Los Angeles Story; the full-length dramatic play Chavez Ravine, written and first performed by Los Angeles-based Chicano comedy troupe Culture Clash in 2003; Jordan Mechner’s 2004 short documentary film Chávez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story; Ry Cooder’s musical album Chávez Ravine: A Record by Ry Cooder; and lastly, high school history teacher Ken Aven’s 2006 debut novel, Chavez Ravine Echoes. Together, these five productions make up a case study that engages with the theoretical debate about privileged groups speaking for, or on behalf of, underrepresented groups. This analysis emphasizes a process of representation that is shared and driven by dialogue between the artists of these productions and the place and people they represent. Through the inclusion of resident involvement in the production process and the weaving of narrative elements from both Mexican American and dominant cultural traditions, these projects promote the Ravine’s cultural wealth and visibility within a popular culture dominated by the symbol of Dodger Stadium. This study, through close readings and textual analysis, demonstrates how these works, considered together, open up spaces for cross-cultural discussions about Chavez Ravine and the various roles it plays within U.S. cultural history. More importantly, these five representations of Chavez Ravine figuratively practice and promote a “speaking to and with” model of intercultural communication between dominant and minority cultures.

Gallay, Lucie. "Implementation of an FFT algorithm using a soft processor core." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2002. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-1367.

Abstract:

This report deals with the modeling of a part of the communication system based on the IEEE 802.11a standard which represents the next generation of wireless LAN with greater scalability, better interference immunity and significantly higher speed, up to 54 Mbps.

802.11a uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) where modulation is performed by an IFFT and the demodulation by an FFT.

After modeling the FFT in Matlab and C, the FFT implementation has been validated using a soft microprocessor core by Xilinx (Microblaze) and the results were compared.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the overthrow of the Calverts in the 1690s by John Coode and the Protestant Association of Maryland. As word of the arrival of William of Orange spread across the Atlantic, one member of the radical network began an uprising in Virginia, known as Parson Waugh’s Tumult. Then in Maryland, the sons-in-law of Thomas Gerard organized and successfully created a democratic government, and the new King supported them. There would still be challenges. A governor tried to quell Coode’s influence, as Coode tried to teach others about Cicero and commonwealths. But the real killer of egalitarian thought was slavery. The switch to an enslaved labor force throughout the Chesapeake over the 1690s substituted race for class in the social hierarchy of the region.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at Harry Dean Stanton's greatest film from a wide range of aspects -- Ry Cooder's music, Robbie Müller's cinematography, Sam Shepard's writing, Wim Wenders' direction, and, of course, the acting, not only Harry Dean's but also that of Nastassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell, Aurore Clément, and Hunter Carson. It traces the genesis of the story that grew out of Shepard's imagination and Wenders' fascination with American iconography. Important, too, was Shepard's encounter with Harry Dean in a Santa Fe bar and subsequent casting of him for the role of Travis Henderson, the mysterious desert wanderer searching for some kind of redemption after abandoning his wife and son. Each of the key contributors to the film -- whether in music, scenery, or the story -- had his or her own journey that led to this very American film that is yet so imbued with European sensibilities. Shot in chronological order and thus with cast and crew shuffling back and forth between Texas and Los Angeles, Paris, Texas was a test for all involved, but it became the film that made Harry Dean most proud and the one that marked the peak of his career.
