Humans have inhabited islands since prehistoric times, often cyclically occupying and abandoning them. While these patterns are increasingly well-explored archaeologically, recent temporal changes in the island biogeography of humans are still poorly understood, with consequences for the social, economic and conservation planning of islands. Here, I asked: (1) at what rates European islands were abandoned in the last 150 years, (2) whether the process of abandonment is scale-dependent and, if so, whether small islands were abandoned more consistently than large islands and (3) whether abandonm

An island might seem an unlikely figure of globalization, and perhaps more appropriate as a model for diasporic communities. This article takes as a starting point the assumption that islands (conceptually as well as geographically) are in fact particularly relevant to pivotal trends within contemporary globalization, even while there are also reasons to consider islanding in relation to diaspora, and in ways that might make us rethink both globalization and the role of diasporas within the global now. AbstractRecent studies show that vertical eddy diffusivity is sufficient on its own to introduce intense horizontal shear layers at sloping ocean margins (Molemaker et al.; Gula et al.; Dewar et al.). These layers influence mesoscale energy and potential vorticity budgets but cannot be fully represented in models without sloping boundaries, no-slip boundary conditions, and sufficiently high resolution. This paper investigates the detachment of these shear layers and their subsequent rolling up into concentrated eddies. These shed eddies, or “sheddies,” may have significant oceanographic impact

During the French Revolution, thousands of French refugees migrated through the Channel borderlands. At least four thousand settled there. The Channel Island of Jersey served as the loci of migration where economic life operated under “refugeedom,” a polity both apart from and particular to state authority. Refugeedom—in its alterity—suggests a matrix of economic conditions, legal codes, and social relations that can explain the lives of people in the French Revolution’s emigration. This study of economic migration offers a way to reframe the French emigration as opportunism and resilience. Re

Few studies have explored the pregnancy lived experience of women who deliver LBW infants. The aim of the study is to understand the lived experience of women in the Solomon Islands who gave birth to LBW infants by exploring their personal (socio-demographic and health), behavioural, social and environmental contexts. In this study, fresh white shrimps were placed in a sealed crystallized polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) container and heated in the MAIH system at two temperatures (130 and 90 °C) from 60 to 120 s. It describes the social and health implications of inequalities within cities and discusses why descriptions of the physical symptoms of poverty (and their health implications) are more common than analyses of the structural systems which produce and perpetuate poverty. It also describes the health problems from which low-income groups in urban areas suffer more than richer groups including those that a
