Temperature distributions within cores of galaxy clusters indicate gas in the core should cool down rapidly and contract. The cooling flow problem involves the hypothesis that the rapidly cooling gas should eventually condensate into unobserved molecular clouds. The equation for the conservation of momentum in the mushy zone during solidification is derived using the volume averaging technique. The conditions under which the momentum equation reduces to Darcy's law are elucidated. Permeabilities for flow of interdendritic liquid in Al-Cu alloys with equiaxial structures are measured using a simple, cost-effective permeameter. Abstract:

The main goal of this thesis project is to identify interesting concepts related to cooling of electrical motors and generators which could be evaluated using suitable computer simulation tools. As the project proceeded it was decided to focus on investigating how the air from a fan flows along the finned frame of a general purpose low voltage electrical machine, how the heat is transferred between the frame and the cooling air and what the temperature distribution looks like. After conducting a literature survey, the author restricted research to a local flow measuring technique as a result of physical constraints on site.
