Abstract:
Summary. The purpose of the study is to reveal the activities of credit unions in Drohobych region in the interwar period, to show their role in the economic protection of the Ukrainian population of Galicia in interwar Poland. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematicity, scientificity, authorial objectivity, as well as the use of general scientific and special-historical methods. The scientific novelty lies in the study of the development of credit cooperation in Drohobych in the 1920‒1930’s. Conclusions. An important place in the cooperative movement of Eastern Galicia in the interwar period belonged to credit cooperatives. In 1938, there were 25 credit cooperatives of Raiffeisen type (rural associations) and Ukrainian banks (Schulze-Delich city cooperatives) in Drohobych region, which were united around Central Bank (Central Cooperative Bank of "Krai Credit Union"). The capital of these institutions consisted of shares of members and contributions of the population. Credit cooperation protected Ukrainians, increased their solvency and economic independence, national consciousness. The main financial institution of the Ukrainian credit cooperative was Central Bank. With well-developed cooperation, Ukrainians could work effectively even under unfavourable conditions and hostility from the Polish occupation regime. The cooperation protected not only the material but also the spiritual needs of Ukrainian citizens, it was a natural manifestation of social and economic self-organization of the people, a source of its cultural self-development. The financial and credit system contributed to the development of cooperation through the organization of affordable credit for the population, the facilitation of mutual relations between national organizations and the strengthening of the legal status of cooperation.

Cooperatives are legal entities based on the principle of kinship, which consist of all members of natural or legal persons for the welfare of their members. Where most people want to open a business, it has to have a lot of capital to keep the business from running or growing. Kabanjahe The majority of the population opens a shop to meet their daily needs. The existence of a savings and loan unit can help people in the Kabanjahe region to open a business to improve the economy of people in Kabanjahe. Therefore, we need a system that is very helpful in the cooperative's transaction process. The Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application can support the notification process and simplify the cooperative payment process. This research can help cooperatives and cooperative members to conduct transactions and help members with notification of the funds spent and the date of the last payment of the paper.

Abstract:
It is established that the existing banking system is aimed primarily at lending to highly concentrated agricultural enterprises and is not adapted to the needs of small rural businesses. Therefore, the creation of an effective mechanism for lending to small and medium-sized agricultural entities through a credit cooperative system is of particular relevance. Rural credit co-operation is a parallel to banks, an alternative financial system that has begun to firmly occupy a niche in the country's credit and financial system. Its line of business is financial services for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs and villagers who cannot be serviced by banks in rural areas. It is proved that the effective activity of credit cooperation is conditioned by the creation of appropriate prerequisites. This is, first of all, voluntary establishment of credit cooperative institutions and accumulation of funds of individuals and legal entities; the purpose of the credit cooperative to ensure the mode of greatest assistance to its participants in credit, settlement, consulting, and other types of services; recognition of the variety of organizational forms of credit cooperative institutions; the direction of use of accumulated financial resources mainly for production purposes; providing financial support to the credit cooperative and legal and consulting assistance from the state. It is determined that the economic essence of credit cooperation is largely determined not by the type and nature of the participants' activity, but by the specifics of the actions and functions that they cooperate with. The involvement of unions of temporarily free funds of all categories of the population will allow to use its income in the areas of residence, in particular to direct them to the development of the agricultural sector. The creation of credit unions should be seen as encouraging the development of small businesses, including: promoting the development of production and processing of agricultural products in personal peasant and small farms, as well as the development of other small forms of farming in the agricultural sector and processing industry (including the promotion of the creation of agricultural service providers cooperatives); expanding the availability of credit resources for private farms and farms, as well as for cooperative units for the production, processing and marketing of agricultural products and services. Keywords: credit cooperation, credit union, population, personal peasant economy, farming, state.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purposes of this paper are twofold. First, it analyses the income structure in cooperative financial institutions and examines how traditional and non-traditional incomes are related. Second, it evaluates whether increasing diversification towards non-traditional incomes facilitates or hampers the benefits of financial cooperative owners.Design/methodology/approachData are collected from over 3,100 US credit unions over the period of 1994–2016. A number of modern econometric techniques are employed throughout the analysis, including the use of panel fixed effect, generalised method of moments (GMM) and two-stage least square (2SLS) methodologies.FindingsUsing US credit unions as the empirical setting, the empirical results reveal that the expansion of traditional income leads to a corresponding increase in income from non-traditional activities. However, an increasing reliance on non-traditional income causes a significant drop in interest margins. The authors also find that the extent to which income diversification affects owner benefit varies across credit union types and period of time. While income diversification negatively affects owners' benefits in single common bond credit unions, it has no significant influence on multiple common bond and community credit union owners' benefits. Third, diversification can be beneficial during crisis time, but can be detrimental to owner benefit during normal time.Originality/valueThis paper provides some of the first empirical investigations on the diversification strategy of cooperative financial institutions. Therefore, the results offer significant policy implications for policymakers and market participants on whether financial cooperatives should diversify or specialise.

This study aims to analyze crediting procedures. The research method used in this research is the descriptive method to describe crediting activities conducted by Cooperative Rahastra Credit Union in Bandung. This research uses the qualitative approach. The data obtained by using the research instrument is through observation, in-depth interview and documentation study. The results of the study indicate that crediting procedures include credit administration, credit documentation, credit approval, and credit processing. Implementation of credit procedures undertaken by the Cooperative Rahastra Credit Union in Bandung has not been maximized because there is still one indicator of lending procedures that have not been met. Indicators that have not been met is the stage of credit documentation, that is when doing credit analysis not all prospective borrowers through the credit analysis phase. Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the factors that affect the market exit of Brazilian singular credit unions from 1995 to 2009; it also identifies and lists the determinants of various types of market exits and analyzes whether profitability is a significant factor for credit union survival. This study was conducted with accounting data provided by the Central Bank of Brazil, which derives only from individual cooperatives, i.e. singular credit unions. Quarterly financial statements from these credit unions that were active from 1995 to the second quarter of 2009 were employed, totaling 71,325 observations for 1,929 credit unions. Based on survival and the model of competing risks (such as the Cox, Exponential, Weibull, Gompertz, and Competing Risk models), the results show that there is no statistical evidence to ensure a correlation between profitability and credit union survival. The results also suggest that the size of credit unions plays a key role in their survival and longevity and that their funding and investment management are related to their survival and risk of market exit. In conclusion, the results confirm the initial idea that the duality inherent to credit unions - cooperative principles versus economic efficiency - might influence the stability, survival, and longevity of these institutions. Such results may also imply that a credit union embracing the rationale of a private bank will become more estranged from its members, something which will hinder its future operations and increase the likelihood of its exit from the market.

Abstract:
The origins of the cooperative movement can be traced to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in 1844, from which similar institutions emerged in Central Europe, the North American continent and the rest of the world. Modern credit unions evolved from these small cooperative societies and have developed into mainstream providers of financial services in many jurisdictions. However, credit unions in the UK have not made a similar impact. There are several factors that have limited their growth – an inadequate legislative framework, an ineffective credit union regulatory system, inappropriate development models, an over-reliance on state subsidies and a disunited movement. The aim of this paper is to re-examine these factors in light of the level of political support provided by the government since 1997.

Abstract:
Since the global financial crisis of 2007–08, the United States, Japan, and the European Union (EU) have heavily stimulated their economies with expansionary monetary policy. World finance has been affected by this policy conduct. Interest rates in most open economies were pushed to very low levels and have remained low ever since. Nevertheless, monetary stimulation has not improved the economic situation to a satisfactory level as of the end of 2019. Several studies such as Claudio Borio and Boris Hofmann (2017) and Nasha Ananchotikul and Dulani Seneviratne (2015) attempted to examine the inefficiency of expansionary monetary policy by looking at bank lending channels. Koot and Walker (1980) studied monetary policy effectiveness through credit union lending channels. They found that at first, credit unions responded well to expansionary monetary policy, but after prolonged easy money policy, the response died down. Abstract:
Cooperative banking in Poland has more than 150 years of tradition, going back to the period of Partitions. The first Polish credit associations and cooperatives were established in Greater Poland in the years 1861–1862, in the fashion of credit cooperatives for farmers established by Friedrich Raiffeisen and the so-called cooperative “people’s banks” associating craftsmen, that were founded by Franz Schultze. In 1899, on the territory of the Austrian Partition, small credit institutions, the so-called “Stefczyk Savings Unions” (“Kasy Stefczyka”), were created, associating mainly farmers, In the period of the Second Polish Republic (1918–1939), Polish Agricultural Bank (Polski Bank Rolny) was established in Warsaw (1919). The bank’s task was to provide financial backing for agriculture, and in 1921 it was transformed into State Agricultural Bank (Państwowy Bank Rolny), only to become Agricultural Bank (Bank Rolny) in 1948. It was replaced by Food Economy Bank (Bank Gospodarki Żywnościowej), called into being in 1975 as a financial head office for cooperative banks which originated from saving and loan cooperatives. In the period of the Polish People’s Republic (1952–1989), state-cooperative banking was in place. The system and economy transformations that took place after 1989 caused crisis and the necessity of state intervention in the Polish cooperative banking. In the years 1990–1994 efforts were made to fix the cooperative banking system through implementation of the Act of June 24, 1994 on restructuring of cooperative banks and Food Economy Bank and on amendments to certain acts. Food Economy Bank was transformed into a joint-stock company as a bank of the National Association of cooperative banks. Besides, nine regional associations were established in the form of a joint-stock company of cooperative banks, which became shareholders of the national bank. The system and functioning of cooperative banks are currently governed by: Banking Law Act of August 29, 1997, Cooperative Law Act of September 16, 1982 and the Act of December 7, 2000 on functioning of cooperative banks, associating thereof and associating banks. The structure of cooperative banking was based on the division into cooperative banks and associating banks. Two associations of cooperative banks are currently operating in Poland: Bank of the Polish Cooperative Movement (Bank Polskiej Spółdzielczości S.A.) with its seat in Warsaw and Cooperative Banking Group – Bank (Spółdzielcza Grupa Bankowa – Bank S.A.) with its seat in Poznań. All the cooperative banks are covered by the Bank Guarantee Fund and under supervision of the Financial Supervision Authority. In 2015 the Act of December 7, 2000 on functioning of cooperative banks, associating thereof and associating banks was amended due to the changes implemented in the European Union Law (the so-called CRD IV/CRR package). Financial security of cooperative banks was increased through establishment of the Institutional Protection Scheme (IPS). Cooperative banks are an important element for development of the entire Polish banking system. Therefore, the financial supervision over the entire system of banking and Cooperative Savings and Credit Unions (SKOK) should be conducted in appropriate manner.

Abstract:
Purpose Although credit unions are nonprofit organizations, their objectives depend on the efficient management of their resources and credit risk aligned with the principles of the cooperative doctrine. This paper aims to propose the combined use of credit scoring and profit scoring to increase the effectiveness of the loan-granting process in credit unions. Design/methodology/approach This sample is composed by the data of personal loans transactions of a Brazilian credit union. Findings The analysis reveals that the use of statistical methods improves significantly the predictability of default when compared to the use of subjective techniques and the superiority of the random forests model in estimating credit scoring and profit scoring when compared to logit and ordinary least squares method (OLS) regression. The study also illustrates how both analyses can be used jointly for more effective decision-making. Originality/value Replacing subjective analysis with objective credit analysis using deterministic models will benefit Brazilian credit unions. The credit decision will be based on the input variables and on clear criteria, turning the decision-making process impartial. The joint use of credit scoring and profit scoring allows granting credit for the clients with the highest potential to pay debt obligation and, at the same time, to certify that the transaction profitability meets the goals of the organization: to be sustainable and to provide loans and investment opportunities at attractive rates to members.

Modified Union credo is a cooperative-type business entity owned by a group of people in a unifying bond, which agrees to invest their money (shares) so as to create joint capital with decent business results and for productive and welfare purposes. The role of cooperatives is very important in Indonesia, because cooperatives can increase the economic growth of Indonesian society. The loan administration information system (credit) at CUM Caritas HKBP Pematangsiantar is not yet effective, because it still uses a manual system so that data is easily lost and difficult to find, and the preparation of reports takes a long time. The purpose of this study is to build a system that makes it easier for staff to process data for CUM Caritas HKBP members and improve staff performance to be more efficient and minimize errors in data processing, especially in the loan administration (credit) section of CUM Caritas HKBP. In this research, in the process of collecting data, the researcher used the method of observation, interviews and literature study and the method of system development to be used was the Prototype method. The information system to be designed will be in the form of a web and use the MySQL database. It is hoped that this research can solve the problem of Loan Administration (Credit) at CUM Caritas HKBP Pematangsiantar.

Abstract:
Pancuran Hidup Credit Union is a cooperative engaged in a savings and loan business that provides loans for its members. In its development often encountered an error due to lack of accuracy of employees in processing data processing transactions and savings and loans that still use the manual system that is using Microsoft office (Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel). This manual system is less effective because the savings and loan transactions that occur are higher so that the calculation is even more numerous, and therefore requires an information system. Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to provide new empirical evidence on the non-performing loan (NPL) determinants of the EU conventional banks, in the context of macroeconomic factors, dimensions of country governance and bank-specific characteristics. Design/methodology/approach The panel data sets of 1,053 conventional banks were obtained over the period of 2007-2016. The Hodrick–Prescott filter was adopted to extract business cycle and credit cycle from real gross domestic product and credit to the private non-financial sector, correspondingly. System-generalised methods of moment was then used to identify the significant determinants of NPL. Findings The empirical results reveal that NPL is primarily driven positively by lagged-one NPL and risk profile. In consonance with the skimping hypothesis, NPL has a significant positive relationship with the cost efficiency. The empirical finding of the business cycle coincides with the Austrian business cycle theory. Particularly, NPL is relatively low during rapid economic growth of credit-sourced business boom. Whereas, business bust happens when credit creation runs its course and is associated with high NPL. This paper encapsulates that NPL is driven by not only macroeconomic factors and bank-specific characteristics but also the dimensions of country governance. Practical implications Policymakers should introduce policies that are geared towards proper dimensions of country governance. Originality/value The novelty of this research does not rely on the multidimensions of NPL determinants but on the disentanglement of the conventional banks with dual identity (i.e. Islamic banks, cooperative banks and ethical banks). It considers business cycle, credit cycle and previous NPL as the potential determinants.

Abstract:
Financial sector liberalization in Kenya and the far world has created an enormous spectrum from which Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (Saccos) can raise finances from. This has coincided with a period of good performances for a number of Saccos. However, there is no certain indication of a link between the good performance and the financing diversification; it is not clear whether those Saccos who have diverse financing sources perform any better than those who rely on their members savings. This paper therefore sought to establish the effect of financing diversification on the performance of Saccos by answering the question; does financing diversification affect the performance of a Sacco? The study used a descriptive correlational design with the study population being all Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (KUSCCO) member Saccos registered in Kakamega County. Data was collected from a key informant in every Sacco using a questionnaire and analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive analysis was done to identify any trends and dispersions in the data while Karl Pearsons zero order coefficient of correlation was used to determine the nature of relationship between financing diversification and Sacco performance. Regression analysis was done to model the relationship between financing diversification and Sacco performance. The study found out that financing diversification had a significant positive effect on Sacco performance. The study has, however, recommended further researches to establish the risk implications of financing diversification on Saccos.

Abstract:
Credit unions increase social orientation and efficiency of the market economy by providing their members with necessary financial services on a non-profit basis. Unfortunately, the role of credit cooperation is underestimated in Ukraine. The article investigates factors, condition and prospects for the credit unions’ development as an important component of Ukrainian economy. Both optimistic and pessimistic scenarios of credit unions’ development in Ukraine have been provided based on forecasts involving methods of analytical equalization of dynamic series, correlation and regression analysis and extrapolation. Analysis of the main indicators of credit unions’ activity in Ukraine between 2004 and 2016 made it possible to detect that between 2008 (when indicators were the highest) and 2016 there was a downward trend in the number of credit unions (by 41%), membership (by 76%), total assets (by 66.5%), deposit and loan portfolios (by 79 and 68%, respectively) with a relative stability of capital ratio (by 39%). Creating a cooperative cluster which will be able to combine the material, monetary and labor resources of all major types of cooperatives in the country at the regional level has been outlined as one of the means to increase the credit unions competitiveness in Ukraine. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to assess the state and forecast trends in the development of credit unions in Ukraine in order to identify the prospects for their functioning in the future.

This paper explains how grants were used to overcome these challenges and create the modern credit union sector. Edward Filene, a wealthy 20th-century department store owner, provided philanthropic funding and technical expertise to early credit unions, resulting directly in the creation of 26,000 American credit unions over a 45-year period. Abstract:
Abstract From its founding in 1936 to roughly 1960, the credit union movement in British Columbia focused on the financial emancipation of lower-income British Columbians. As such it was one of a number of similarly inspired institutions, which included adult education centres, cooperatives, trade unions and the CCF. In spite of the existence of Canadian prototypes — the caisse populaire movement in Quebec and, what inspired the BC credit unions in the first place, the Antigonish movement in Nova Scotia — the BC experience generally followed the American model. The first experiments in cooperatives date to the 1860s, but early efforts were sporadic and uncoordinated. Started initially in 1932 by Vancouver's Army of the Good and encouraged by, among several organizations, the CCF, credit unions were given legal standing late in 1939. Once authorized, these institutions expanded rapidly; 139 were established before the end of the war. They answered a felt need to promote savings and encourage the responsible handling of cheaper levels of credit. By 1960, however, the British Columbian credit union movement was reaching the end of its emancipatory stage and had drifted far from its roots. Initially founded on the economic populism of the Antigonish movement, it absorbed many of the organizational techniques and some of the conservatism which characterized the American movement.

Abstract:
The objective of this contribution is to work out the customer relationship management and the commercial performance of the institutions of microfinance (IMF) in Cameroon in order to show its impacts on the performance indicators of the latter. To achieve this goal, we have simultaneously applied the nonparametric method of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the censored Tobit model on a sample of 60 IMF belonging to the Cameroon Cooperative Credit Union League (CAMCCUL) network. The different statistical tests carried out have first of all permitted us to estimate the IMF performance levels and then to assess the different factors which influence the commercial performance of the IMF, taking into account the indicators obtained from the literature review. As a general rule, we have realized from our results that the IMF of the CAMCCUL network are globally inefficient as regards the commercial performance, the women influence on the scores of performance being very significant, insofar as the IMF which are in majority made up of women have relatively been more impressive compared to those which are in majority made up of men. Among the factors influencing the performance, we have noted that the computerized management of the customer relationship and the proximity (closeness) of the social contacts exert a positive influence on the performance, while the satisfaction towards the past experiences with the IMF exerts a negative and very significant influence on this one.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the existence and determinants of the credit gap in the cinnamon value chain development in Northwestern Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach A multi-stage sampling of 548 cinnamon households and a Heckman Selection Model were applied to examine their credit access constraints. In-depth interviews with cooperatives, enterprises, banks and relevant government agencies were further conducted to explain the credit gap. Findings In the total 52.74 percent of households that received credit, 24.56 percent of them received an insufficient amount of credit as registered. In addition, 35.77 percent of total households are credit rationed. Although all enterprises and cooperatives had been successful in applying for credit as long as they have collateral, none of them received the full credit amount requested. The credit amount received satisfied 80.64, 43.03 and 44.28 percent of the demand by households, cooperatives and enterprises, respectively. The lack of valuable collateral assets is the most important factor explaining this credit gap. Moreover, membership in a farmer-based union or ownership of a bank account increases the probability of access to credit. Educated household heads with a larger farm size and the Kinh ethnic majority are positively associated with a larger amount of credit. Households with conventional cinnamon farming, more dependents and union non-membership are more likely to be credit rationed. Practical implications A reform on collateral management, facilitating access to bank accounts, capacity building for local farmer-based unions, organic certification, granting land use rights and facilitating a platform to share reliable information between relevant actors are needed to bridge the credit gap. Originality/value This paper analyses the determinants of credit access constraints by key actors in a medicinal plant value chain that was insufficiently discussed by previous studies in the field.

Abstract:
The article presents the outline of credit unions’ history in Poland, the credit unions’ legal status in Polish law and the credit union’s legal status as the European Cooperative Society (SCE). Conclusions driven from this analysis are compared with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) standards and the contents of the International Cooperative Principles. Also, the article discusses legal environment, government attitude and development trends of credit unions’ in Poland. In conclusion, the de lege ferenda postulates regarding credit unions’ regulation in Poland are presented. Credit unions in Poland conduct not for profit business activity only with their members with reservation to mediating in specific contracts on financial market which can be also conducted with nonmembers. Credit unions activity is subject to supervision of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (FSA). Therefore credit unions regulation is characterized by duality of legal regime of private and administrative law. However, in certain fields of credit unions activity the FSA’s supervision, performed under administrative legal regime, raises justified doubts in the light of the principle of cooperative autonomy as the FSA by law has the authority to impose specific orders and prohibitions on credit unions.Received: 06 September 2019Accepted: 21 February 2020Published online: 01 April 2020

Abstract:
Groups organized on the basis of voluntary cooperation play a significant role in the financial systems of sub-Saharan African countries. Following the success of the cooperative movement and the Grameen model, self-organized microfinance organizations have spread across the continent. In our study, we examine the role of self-organizing groups through the Ugandan example. According to a survey by the Central Bank of Uganda, there were about 1,000 active savings and credit unions and more than 70,000 financial self-help groups in the country in 2018. Although savings and credit cooperative organizations are sometimes influenced by the politics, they still play a significant role in poverty reduction.
