Full textThe purpose of the current phenomenological study was to understand the developmental experiences of authentic leaders by documenting their own stories of how they view their growth into a successful global leader. The study used three overarching research questions: (1) How do leaders within international cooperatives describe their lived experiences that contributed to their development into successful and authentic global leaders? (2) How do cooperative leaders explain how they apply/use the principle of stewardship on a daily basis? (3) What experiences are described as challenges in the application of authentic leadership? Using these overarching questions as a guide, the current study posed interview questions that explore participants’ experiences in developing into an authentic leader. The study also explored how operating in a global environment has influenced their ability to be authentic in their leadership. Additionally, interview questions explored the context of authentic leadership and global leadership within cooperative organizations and how the role of being a steward for the organization influences their leadership style.
The theoretical framework for the study was guided by global leadership theory, authentic leadership theory, and stewardship theory. Purposeful sampling and snowball sampling were used to select study participants who are senior leaders within international cooperative organizations. Data was collected through the use of semi-structured interviews, and the interviews were transcribed and then analyzed using NVivo qualitative analysis software. The information collected and subsequent analysis may help future cooperative leaders develop into successful and authentic global leaders, as well as help close the gap in the literature on leadership within international cooperatives. The research findings led to the development of five themes surrounding the phenomenon of developing into an authentic leader within an international cooperative: (1) leading successfully, (2) leading globally, (3) developing authentically, (4) meeting the leadership challenge, and (5) cooperative appeal.

Full textThe study is based on intergovernmental fiscal relations in South Africa. The focus area is on the current fiscal arrangements. The equitable sharing of nationally collected revenue - the manner in which finances are transferred from central to sub-national governments; vertical and horizontal division, conditional grants are explored. Sub national governments' fiscal capacity; their tax base and borrowing powers are also examined. Various legislation, institutions and structures as well as practices in the intergovernmental fiscal system are explored in order to evaluate the effectiveness and efficacy of the emerging fiscal system. Historical developments of intergovernmental financial relations in South Africa are explored in order to explain why certain things in the current fiscal system are done and others not; where other practices originated and what prompted the current system. Cooperative governance is discussed, as fiscal arrangements are impossible if the three spheres of government do not co-ordinate their functions and Legislation. The study employs both the qualitative and quantitative method of data collection, including secondary sources, which comprise library books, journal articles, policy documents and newspapers and news bulletins. Primary sources used, are interviews with personnel from the Financial and Fiscal Commission, provincial and local governments as well as members of the general public. The study concludes th.at the emerging intergovernmental fiscal system in South Africa is still in a state of flux, in the light of enabling legislation still outstanding and some institutions and structures. of promoting cooperative government lacking teeth, it will take a while for the system to reach a state where it could be declared effective and efficient
Haghirian, Mehran. "Effectuating a Cooperative Future Between Iran and the Arab States of the Persian Gulf." Thesis, American University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10257078.
Full textThere are multiple paths for constructive cooperation between Iran and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf that can reshape the current contentious relations. Because of numerous mutual concerns, shared historic, religious, and cultural ties, as well as the importance of trade, Iran and the neighboring Arab countries must surmount the costly, zero-sum political frictions of today and envision a cooperative future that ensures the peace and security of the Persian Gulf. This thesis aims to present viable pathways for constructive cooperation between Iran and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf through analysis of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy objectives and determinants, differentiating and analyzing identified grievances and positive factors in bilateral relations between Iran and the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the consequences of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the geopolitics of the region.

Full textThere is overwhelming evidence that South Africa’s rivers are heavily polluted, a situation which is attributable to a large degree to poorly functioning and inefficiently managed waste water treatment works in municipalities. The evidence suggests, furthermore, that municipalities often do not comply with their constitutional obligation to provide water services in a sustainable manner and promote a safe and healthy environment. Such non-compliance infringes on people's constitutionally guaranteed rights to a pollution-free environment and equitable access to sufficient and safe water. The problem is that municipalities are not properly managing the waste water treatment works (WWTWs) and not regulating industrial discharge into these works in accordance with the prescribed national norms and standards. The National Water Act 36 of 1998 and other related Acts provide for legal and informal enforcement mechanisms that criminalise acts of pollution. However, none of them have been effective in enforcing municipal compliance with the national norms and standards of effluent management. There are two main reasons for this. First, the constitutional structure does not allow the Minister responsible for water management to exercise direct supervision of the municipalities despite the functional relationship the Department of Water and Sanitation has with municipalities in respect of water. Secondly, the Constitution (1996) instructs the spheres of government to avoid legal processes and cooperate with one another by intervening to execute the function if the sphere responsible for the function lacks capacity. This thesis explores the possible use of two statutory instruments of cooperative government and intergovernmental relations as strategies to complement and support the conventional enforcement measures in the water sector: the establishment of water intergovernmental forums; and the use of implementation protocols to supervise municipalities that chronically lack capacity as a way of providing targeted support and monitoring to facilitate an effective compliance and enforcement regime in the water sector.

Full textHumans and robots working safely and seamlessly together in a cooperative environment is one of the future goals of the robotics community. When humans and robots can work together in the same space, a whole class of tasks becomes amenable to automation, ranging from collaborative assembly to parts and material handling to delivery. Proposed standards exist for collaborative human-robot safety, but they focus on limiting the approach distances and contact forces between the human and the robot. These standards focus on reactive processes based only on current sensor readings. They do not consider future states or task-relevant information. A key enabler for human-robot safety in cooperative environments involves the field of intention recognition, in which the robot attempts to understand the intention of an agent (the human) by recognizing some or all of their actions to help predict the human’s future actions. We present an approach to inferring the intention of an agent in the environment via the recognition and representation of state information. This approach to intention recognition is different than many ontology-based intention recognition approaches in the literature as they primarily focus on activity (as opposed to state) recognition and then use a form of abduction to provide explanations for observations. We infer detailed state relationships using observations based on Region Connection Calculus 8 (RCC-8) and then infer the overall state relationships that are true at a given time. Once a sequence of state relationships has been determined, we use a Bayesian approach to associate those states with likely overall intentions to determine the next possible action (and associated state) that is likely to occur. We compare the output of the Intention Recognition Algorithm to those of an experiment involving human subjects attempting to recognize the same intentions in a manufacturing kitting domain. The results show that the Intention Recognition Algorithm, in almost every case, performed as good, if not better, than a human performing the same activity

Full textThe study seeks to investigate the perceived lack of coordination, integration, and coherence among units of government as related to eGovernment. The nature of the study is qualitative with a focus on the use of eGovernment in the public sector and whether it can facilitate intergovernmental forums business processes in an effective and efficient manner. The scope of the study is confined to the intergovernmental fiscal system but focused on eGovernment, intergovernmental relations, and cooperative governance. The primary objective of the study is to explore the use of eGovernment whether it can facilitate, coordinate, and integrate intergovernmental relations. Some studies portray that there are challenges in the coordination of intergovernmental forums which have resulted into a disintegration of services. The study further investigates options that could mitigate these challenges through acknowledging the effective application of ICTs (eGovernment) in government services. The study has found that South Africa has a functioning system of intergovernmental which are not effectively coordinated in terms of engaging each other in matters of mutual interest. On the other hand, eGovernment promised to bring about cohesion and transparency when they are effectively employed. The study revealed that the application of eGovernment in the intergovernmental forums has the capability to improve their operations, respond to its ineffective coordination and improve delivery of services. In a nutshell, the study has found that there is a need for a radical planning outlook that recognises proper utilization of eGovernment in the intergovernmental forums to promote cooperative governance.

Full textThe Family Health Supporting Center (NASF) consists in multidisciplinary team which has principle to operate together with Family Health Strategy (ESF). Both of them are configured to a favorable space for the study of interaction between professionals, cooperation degrees and care. The aim of this study was to identify enablers and barriers of shared work in ESF/NASF. For this purpose a qualitative study was conducted. In-depth interviews were used for data collection. Fifteen São Paulo NASF/ESF professionals participated. The interviews were analyzed using discourse analysis technique. The results indicate the categories: collaboration resources, interprofessional collaboration model and goals, working hours, turnover. The interprofessional collaboration is related to the meanings that professionals give to their role in shared work, their way of acting and working guidelines. The use of resources, the cooperation model adequacy and how the professionals deal with the goals denote the coexistence of different models of care. There are insufficient organizational devices to support the shared work in the ESF. The study highlights the need to increase knowledge about the collaborative processes in the ESF, recognizing its potential contribution in the field of labor management and reform of health care models

Full textIn a context of increasing competition and international regulation in the banking system, and facing a financial crisis which questions the uses of money, is another way of banking possible? We try to answer this question through the analysis of the case study of the Nef, a little solidarity-based finance cooperative based on an alternative project. The Nef, at first a financial institution which later in 2014 got a banking agreement, grew up over 20 years and professionalised. We identify the various types of isomorphism which marked its trajectory and cause a hybridisation of its cooperative model. We build up and analyse the set up of itinerant bankers as an organisational innovation, in order to reaffirm the cooperative project. As they bring heteromorphism and heteropraxy into the organisation, these itinerant bankers anchor the organisation in its territory and the stakes of its development. Is this experiment a process of cooperative recovery, and will it spread ? We took part and followed the undergoing processes within a 5 year intervention research. Our analysis focuses on isomorphism, proximity and translation in a neo-institutional perspective. Our results show that itinerant bankers set up revitalise the cooperative system and shareholder relations as well as a business growth. Thus the experience show a rebalancing in hybridisation phenomena favourable to the social project and stimulating economic activity. The deployment of itinerant bankers is recent, and will deserve to be studied in its forms of development

Full textFacing for several years with societal, technological, competitive and legal mutations, banking institutions see the need to review both the strategy of their retail bank network implantation and the model of the branch itself. Cooperative banks are particularly concerned by this challenge in that they have built their organizational model on a vast network of local agencies deeply rooted in the territories. Affected by a phenomenon of banalization resulting from the progressive hybridization of their model, they aspire today to regain their identity by inscribing their members at the heart of a banking relationship centered on territorial anchoring and modernity. We are therefore pondering about the determinants of this new proximity relationship in a cooperative banking context. To do this, we rely on a theoretical framework articulated around the theories of proximity that we confront with the actual situation. Our research has brought us to meet stakeholders in the local sphere (members, collaborators, administrators and branches managers) and the strategic core (general secretary). The results are also derived from the statistical analysis of a questionnaire survey carried out among 982 young members of Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne. Finally, we argue that the complexity of the attributes of proximity must lead management to reinvent the relations between members and the traditional retail bank, while ensuring that they don’t lock themselves into an institutional isomorphism which seems to be already well underway
Kassongo, Rashidi Francois. "An analysis of public relations programme’s strategies for sustaining stakeholder relationship with its key industry partners." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2305.
Full textPublic relations (PR) scholars and industry partners continue to emphasise the importance of a sustainable relationship between PR disciplines and key industry iii partners. This relationship seeks to respond to stakeholders that remain despondent with the quality of engagement between the South African PR academia and industry. Existing literature in this field argues that PR departments at South African universities are experiencing adverse scrutiny by industry as many current academic programmes do not produce students who are industry ready. To address this critical concern, building and sustaining relations with key stakeholders is imperative. This study examines engagement strategies that the PR programme at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology uses to build and sustain relations with key industry partners. The research draws on two Public Relations theories: stakeholder theory and two-way symmetrical communication to make sense of the strategies used by this programme. It is based on a qualitative approach and an exploratory case study research design. Empirical data were collected through one-to-one interviews and focus group discussions with PR programme staffs, final year PR students and employees from two external PR consultancies. The data were coded and thematically analysed. The main finding of the study is that current engagement strategies are ineffective for relationship building purposes between the PR programme and key industry partners. To sustain mutually beneficial relationships, it is recommended that existing strategies be revised in order to improve relations between the PR department at Cape Peninsular University of Technology (CPUT) and its industry partners, as well as to promote the advancement of both PR as an academic discipline and a profession.
Antell, Beatrice, and Emma Heijl. "Central Purchasing at Stora Enso : A Survey of the Supplier Relations." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2649.
Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the suppliers’ view of their relation to Stora Enso. The study focuses on the relation between the central purchasing unit of Stora Enso and the suppliers but also gives indications of how the overall interface between Stora Enso and the suppliers works. The purpose is explored through a number of research objectives, which are presented below.
Areas essential for the functioning of the central purchasing unit:
- The overall organisation of Stora Enso’s purchasing activities,
- Stora Enso’s cross-functional purchasing teams,
- The internal coordination and communication,
- The relational bonds between Stora Enso and the suppliers
Important goals and visions for the central purchasing unit:
- Minimising the Total Business Cost,
- Being an attractive partner to the suppliers
Currently discussed issues within the central purchasing organisation:
- The potential for closer cooperation between Stora Enso and the suppliers,
- The professionalism of Stora Enso’s purchasers
Stora Enso is well organised for purchasing but the centrally coordinated cross-functional teams are not working as well as they could. The internal coordination has improved lately but the central purchasing unit’s mission to optimise for Stora Enso as a whole often creates tension within the organisation, as a result of the mills being profit centres. The internal communication is not efficient, and the suppliers are strengthening their bonds with the mills by taking over the responsibility for certain information flows. The central purchasing unit and the cross-functional teams have the responsibility but not the authority to carry out their task of identifying and reducing the Total Business Cost. Stora Enso is an attractive customer for their suppliers, mainly because of the big volumes they represent. The current negotiation strategies are not advantageous for the introduction of collaborative supplier relations but other factors in the relation between the suppliers and Stora Enso speak strongly in favour for such a strategic change. When it comes to professionalism and business moral the suppliers give the central purchasing unit a very positive evaluation.

The thesis shows the military relations that were established between the states of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) from the 1960s, aiming at analyzing the construction of cooperation in the field of security. The analysis was marked by the understandings that these relations were dictated by the internal interests of each state, the quest for achieving those goals has suffered the influence of external factors (global, regional and sub regional) resulting in periods of enmity/friendship, cordiality/rivalry, conflict/ cooperation, and that the security process was made by interactions (public, private, civil and military) that allowed changes in perceptions of threats and, therefore, in the security and defense practices. Prioritizing the documentary representation of history and empirism above the theory and comprehending that the dynamics of security means that there is an interconnection through which global stability influences on regional stability and vice versa, the analysis included the international system, international organizations, the U.S. interests and their influence on regional security arrangements; and the states’ bilateral and multilateral relations, and internal factors that influenced the process. During the Cold War, the military regimes, the structuring of the apparatus for the Southern Cone’s protection and the relationships established between them related to the security interests of the U.S. and geopolitical designs. In this period, some factors led to moments of disagreements and rivalry, in the same time that your logic allowed friendly relations due to the need for preservation of the military regimes and the continental security. The system redevelopment in the post-Cold War, regionalists trends, the international organizations actions, the redemocratization processes and changes in U.S. security interests have led to relations based on cooperation with the development of so-called confidence building measures, the acceptance of the multidimensional security concept and to new sub-regional cooperation arrangements. In this framework, the mechanisms established by the Southern Cone’s states, especially in the post-Cold War, allowed the setup of network cooperation’s security in the sub-region.

Prioritizing the documentary representation of history and empirism above the theory and comprehending that the dynamics of security means that there is an interconnection through which global stability influences on regional stability and vice versa, the analysis included the international system, international organizations, the U.S. interests and their influence on regional security arrangements; and the states' bilateral and multilateral relations, and internal factors that influenced the process. During the Cold War, the military regimes, the structuring of the apparatus for the Southern Cone's protection and the relationships established between them related to the security interests of the U.S. and geopolitical designs. In this period, some factors led to moments of disagreements and rivalry, in the same time that your logic allowed friendly... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: This thesis discusses the recent phenomenon of the emergence of labor cooperatives in Brazil. We orient the research to the study of the reality of workers excluded from the model of formal employment, seeking employment and income by participating in labor cooperatives in Brasilia, Federal District, given that such cooperatives have become increasingly "new" or "renewed" forms of work organization. The aim of this study was to learn how poor workers, who participate in labor cooperatives in Brasilia express, through discourse and social practices, their perception and understanding on labor cooperatives, identifying possible outcomes of cooperation and self-management practices in improving their living conditions and the incorporation of changes in the relationships that they build with each other, with society, with the state and with the market. The study participants were male and female workers from impoverished sectors, who participate in labor cooperatives in the Federal District, especially collectors of recyclable materials. Empirical data were collected in four stages: mapping of labor cooperatives in the Federal District, with the intent of selecting those that correspond to the profile of social inclusion, qualitative interviews with fifteen cooperative leaders selected from the mapping; application of socioeconomic profile questionnaires to workers of the three selected cooperatives of collectors of recyclable materials in order to develop an in-depth study, and qualitative interviews with twenty-five workers selected from the three cooperatives under study. The research results, obtained from the different discourses of collectors of recyclable materials, demonstrate that they perceive labor cooperatives as those that: a) enable them improved income and working conditions compared to alone or unattended work; b) give them, besides improved income, production conditions, improvements in personal life and changes in domestic and community relations, c) are presented only as a means of survival in conditions of extreme necessity, far from being the desirable type of work, considering that being employed in the formal sector would be the ideal job

This study conducts a cartography with the intent to understand the relationships inside the Programa Trinacional Ñandeva, a program belonging to the Itaipu Technological Park, performed in the region of the Triple border between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and belonging to' COART - Handcraft Cooperative of West and Southwestern of Paraná. The COART seeks to bring together artisans of the region defending their interests and the Ñandeva wants to improve the handcraft sector and regional, tri-national identity, starting with the intervention of designers in training workshops and creating iconography aimed at craftsmen in the region. It is intended, from the point of view of material culture, realize and point attentions on social relations, conflicts and power struggles that are involved in the production and circulation handmade process. For this, the research relies on the movement of artisanal artifacts and narratives of the subjects involved in the specific context of the city of Foz do Iguaçu, in the period 2012 to 2015. Therefore, it is proposed to understand the proposals and the working of these spaces, and how to follow the movements made by artifacts from narratives of interlocutors Dircéia Braga, Gorette Milioli and Nilse Mognol responsible for Program Ñandeva and COART Cooperative. this is an exploratory research, in which development strategies are related to literature review, exploratory research and analysis of results, seeking to understand and describe the possible existing crossings between Program and Cooperative. It is believed that this study may contribute to the material culture studies demonstrating that the movement of artisanal artifacts are present practices, strategies and disputes not always explicit.

Full textThe existence of cooperation among non-kin in many species constitutes an apparent paradox for evolutionary biologists. The most commonly accepted explanation is that cooperation can be enforced by mechanisms that reward cooperators or punish cheaters. Most of the theoretical works in evolutionary game theory, however, aim only at explaining how some cooperation can exist at an evolutionary equilibrium, thanks to these enforcement mechanisms. Here, we aim at showing, instead, that evolutionary game theory can also explain the fine-grained properties of the cooperation that takes place in the living world, especially in the case of the human species. First, we address the question of the origin of enforced cooperation: How can enforced cooperation evolve from an initially non-cooperative state? Using tools from the field of machine learning, we show that enforced cooperation can evolve as a by-product of adaptation to interactions with shared interests. We also show that this process has only two possible evolutionary outcomes. Either all cooperative opportunities are enforced, which corresponds to the human cooperative syndrome, or only a very few number are, which corresponds to non-human cooperation. We also propose a variation of this model to explain why many mutualisms are exaggerated forms of cooperation with shared interests. In a second approach, we focus on one specific enforcement mechanism called partner choice. Using agent-based simulations, we show that, when individuals can freely choose their cooperative partners, the only level of effort invested into cooperation that is evolutionarily stable is the one that maximizes the social efficiency of cooperation. We then build analytical models of partner choice imported from economic matching theory. We show that the only evolutionarily stable distribution of the benefits of cooperation is both independent of bargaining power and proportional to each participant's relative contribution. Thus, partner choice explains two fine-grained properties of human cooperation, namely our preferences for the most socially efficient forms of cooperation and our concerns for fair distributions. Finally, we show that costly signalling models of cooperation can explain several properties of moral reputation, and we conclude by discussing directions for future research

Full textThis thesis has investigated primary teachers' respect conceptions and how these concepts relate to building relations of mutual respect in the classroom and the development of child moral autonomy. Genetic Epistemology is the theoretical basis of this research, particularly Moral Development in the work of Jean Piaget. Data collection was conducted with thirteen teachers from diverse educational institutions and organized in two steps: first, written records about a situation narrated in the third person were made; second, a semi-structured interview, based on previously collected data and guided by Piagetian clinical method, was conducted. This collected data allowed the analysis from two main categories: the relations among teachers and students and the construction of a cooperative environment. In each of these categories, conceptions of respect related to the dimensions of unilateral and mutual respect were noted as well as their interference on the school routine was observed.

Indeed, ideology has had an important place in bilateral relations between Iran and Turkey for a long time. Ideological factors constituted the immediate reasons for conflict between Turkey and Iran in the 1990s as well. However, ideological differences between the two countries did not cause any serious conflict in the 1980s. Then, the question arises, why and how did ideological reasons led to severe frictions between Iran and Turkey in the 1990s. In this regard, this thesis paid attention to two factors that have profound effects on the foreign policies of Turkey and Iran
changing internal conditions, and the changing geopolitics of Turkey and Iran after the dissolution of the USSR and the Gulf War of 1991.

Full textFrench-congolese relations of cooperation gravitate bilateral agreements signed in 1960 and revised on january ist, 1974 in brazzaville (popular republic of congo). This situation of bilateral relations of cooperation will serve to verify if the french policy of cooperation as it is practised on the ground of congolese development really leads towards the same direction as the latter. Once analysed, the irreconcilability between the aims really pursed by the french policy of cooperation and those of a real development, shows that it contributes only incidently and indirectly to this development. In order to go in the real way of development, and to adapt itself to it, the french policy of cooperation should be rethought and readjusted to the actual necessities of development. In the same way, development should be revised from its contents up to its finality

Full textIraqi invasion in March 2003 is analyzed within the framework of the structural analysis. The broader context of the causes of tension in transatlantic relations is further explored. The US&rsquo
Iraqi invasion has demonstrated us that she wants to reproduce her Middle Eastern policy by having a direct possession over the power structures. This fact led to the opposition of two main European powers, namely France and Germany. Those countries, which might be regarded as constituting the Franco-German axis, have been trying to involve into the US&rsquo
policy of reproducing the power structures. Whether the US is willing to give the Franco-German axis this role is also a key point, which is explored. Furthermore, in the thesis, attempts of the US and the Franco-German axis towards mending the fences in transatlantic relations that have been deteriorated with the Iraqi crisis are analyzed. The thesis seeks to show that the prospects for cooperation in transatlantic relations are an open-ended process due to the fact that there are both existing problems and opportunities for cooperation in transatlantic relations.
