Purpose Taxonomic awareness is central to vocabulary development and assessment. While taxonomic development appears largely unaffected by environmental factors, the impact of divided language input on distinct levels of the taxonomic hierarchy is unclear. The bilingual cognitive advantage hypothesis assumes that native speakers of two languages have better-developed cognitive abilities than native speakers of only one language. In particular, bilinguals are considered to be characterized by enhanced executive functions (attention, cognitive flexibility, resistance to interference). The bilingual cognitive advantage effect is most frequently revealed for elderly bilingual speakers, while experiments with young adults yield inconsistent results. Based on their bilingual profiles, the subjects are identified as being coordinate, i.e. school, bilinguals. We hypothesized that L1 regulation underlies the observed costs and benefits, with word learning advantages depending on learning via the L1. Four groups learned novel Dutch words via

Recently, teachers in the United States are encountering an influx of multilingual immigrant students. The linguistic diversity can be challenging for teachers who need to think about how to foster language and disciplinary knowledge awareness in meaningful ways. Multimodal instruction (i.e., use of gesture, drawing, and movement) can serve to support conceptual understanding of emergent bilingual students in disciplinary areas such as mathematics or science. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the interplay between gestures and mathematical concepts. This study takes place in a ninth grade ESOL Coordinate Algebra Classroom. Using systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis, the researchers analyze the teacher's gestures through a corpus of three video recorded lessons. The results show that the teacher's gestures endowed with meanings and mathematical concepts can enhance students' understandings. These findings can contribute to recent research on multimodal pedagogic practices among teachers with multilingual and multicultural students.

Abstract This chapter focuses on bilingualism. For psycholinguists, the fundamental scientific questions about bilingualism pertain to how two language systems coexisting in a single individual are represented, managed, and coordinated. The chapter then discusses the key concept of code-switching wherein the speaker switches from one language to the other within the same sentence. Moreover, code-switching offers further evidence for the co-activation of known languages in a bilingual’s mind during production or comprehension. Initially, bilingualism was viewed as a risk factor for children’s cognitive and linguistic development, but, eventually, the motivation for these views came to be seen as rooted in bias against immigrant groups and in racist policies promoting English-only.

Abstract:
Marinos Papadopoulos Vretos (Corfu, 1828–Paris, 1871) represents a remarkable case of a conscious cultural mediator between Greece and France, during a critical time (1850–1870). Through a variety of print media (Greek, French or bilingual), he sought to inform the French-language public about the cultural identity of modern Greeks and to confute the distorted image provided by travel literature. Thanks to his excellent education in French, he managed to penetrate the French press, writing about Greek issues. He mobilised around him a network of French philhellenes, Hellenists and journalists who rebroadcasted his positions. Through his Greek-language Εθνικόν Ημερολόγιον [National Almanac], he ‘coordinated’ an important discussion on the language question, preparing the road for the foundation of the Association pour l’encouragement des études grecques.
