A software application or a hardware device performs well under favorable conditions. Practically there can be many factors which effect the performance and functioning of the system. Scenarios where the system fails or performs better are needed to be determined. Logging is one of the best methodologies to determine such scenarios. Logging can be helpful in determining worst and effective performance. There is always an advantage of levels in logging which gives flexibility in logging different kinds of messages. Determining what messages to be logged is the key of logging. All the important events, state changes, messages are to be logged to know the higher level of progress of the system. Medical Device Coordination Framework (MDCF) deals with device connectivity with MDCF server. In this report, we propose a logging component to the existing MDCF. Logging component for MDCF is inspired from the flight data recorder, “black box”. Black box is a device used to log each and every message passing through the flight‟s system. In this way it is reliable and easy to investigate any failures in the system. We will also be able to simulate the replay of the scenarios. The important state changes in MDCF include device connection, scenario instantiation, initial state of MDCF server, destination creation. Logging in MDCF is implemented by wrapping Log4j logging framework. The interface provided by the logging component is used by MDCF in order to log. This implementation facilitates building more complex logging component for MDCF.

Full textHospitals are increasingly providing services for more medically complicated patients who require the care of multiple providers. This results in complex interdependent work relationships that require coordination to optimize patient care. Consequently, coordination-- especially between nurses and physicians who constitute the main providers of care-- may play an increasingly important role in the provision of quality care to hospitalized patients. Three studies were done to examine the role of intra- and interprofessional coordination of nurses and physicians in inpatient medical care. All were cross-sectional, descriptive studies using multivariate linear regression methodology, with data aggregated and analyzed at the facility level. Both primary data obtained from surveys of nurse managers, attending physicians and chiefs of medicine, and secondary data obtained from surveys of staff nurses and administrative data sources were used. Study One: The impact of provider coordination on provider perceptions of patient care and job satisfaction in inpatient medicine examined the association between intra- and interprofessional coordination and provider perceptions of the quality of patient care, and provider job satisfaction and intent to leave. Study Two: Organizational predictors of provider perceptions of coordination in inpatient medicine examined the association between organizational factors and provider perceptions of inpatient coordination. Study Three: The impact of provider coordination on patient outcomes examined the association between perceptions of intra- and interprofessional coordination and patient satisfaction; in-hospital fall, pressure ulcer, readmission and mortality rates; hospital costs; and lengths of stay. These studies contribute to the literature by assessing the impact of perceived coordination on patient and provider outcomes, and by identifying the organizational factors associated with perceptions of coordination. Results indicated that greater intra- and/ or interprofessional coordination may be associated with: better provider perceptions of patient care, patient satisfaction, and physician job satisfaction; higher hospital costs; and lower provider intent to leave and mortality rates. An organization's explicit commitment to patient care, to resources that enable providers to do their jobs, and to strategies that enhance communication between providers may improve coordination. Some factors, such as appropriate staffing, may be pre-requisites before coordination can have an impact on some patient outcomes.

Medical device interoperability and re-configurability continue to be important areas of research toward the realization of verifiable medical systems that can be rapidly assembled to meet the needs of specific patients. This thesis addresses the modularized design of a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump to be used within the context of the Medical Device Coordination Framework (MDCF), an open source framework under development by Kansas State University and the University of Pennsylvania that is informed by the Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) specification managed by the MD PnP program and its collaborators. The thesis illustrates how to set up the MDCF development environment with Eclipse so that a developer can create software for both a remote MDCF console and a local PCA pump, where ICE channels are used for message transmission. Software development on the MDCF console side includes the development of apps that communicate with a local PCA pump through ICE channels and (b) the development of a GUI that can be launched from an MDCF console to configure, control, and monitor a PCA pump. Software development on the PCA pump side includes the creation of (a) ICE channels that can communicate with an MDCF console and (b) multiple threads for corresponding UART ports that support a modularized design. Several hardware modules were implemented to demonstrate the modularized design approach: an alarm module, a patient button module, a pump module, and a control panel module. These modules employ BeagleBone, Arduino, and MSP430 boards. Status information is displayed on an MDCF console GUI, a PCA pump GUI, and a local LCD screen. An enhanced PCA pump or general medical sub-system with more modules can be developed using a similar method by connecting individual modules to UART ports and then creating the corresponding threads to support device-console communication.
