This PhD project studied the caesium and strontium removal capacities of six nanoporous materials. Indeed, it was linked in with the SIXEP plant present at Sellafield site, UK, which is currently using natural clinoptilolite, originally mined from the Mojave Desert, to remove radioactive caesium and strontium ions from wastewater effluents. The research described in this thesis is aimed at demonstrating the synthetic utility of the asymmetric amino-Cope rearrangement and highlight its potential for future application in natural product synthesis. Using the recently developed asymmetric anionic amino-Cope methodology, rearrangement of diasteromerically pure 3-amino-l,5-hexadiene substrates provided the target aldehyde in good yield and with high levels of asymmetric induction (up to 94% e.e.). The aldehyde obtained was used for the successful formation of2,4-disubstituted lactones with no apparent loss of stereochemical integrity.

New Anionic Annulation Reactions and Anion Accelerated Amino-Cope Rearrangement. This dissertation compiles asymmetric anionic reactions of chiral Ellman sulfinyl imines and dienolates to access diverse nitrogen-containing compounds. Chiral sulfinimines and dienolates derived from 𝛾-bromocrotonates reacted diastereoselectively forming 3-pyrrolines and 𝑐𝑖𝑠-vinyl aziridines via a formal [3+2]-annulation and vinylogous 𝑎𝑧𝑎-Darzens reactions respectively.
