Abstract:
Our confidence in markets comes from economics, and our confidence in economics is underpinned by the Nobel Prize in Economics, which was first awarded in 1969. Was it a coincidence that the prize and the rise of free-market liberalism began at the same time? This is the first book to describe the origins and power of the most important prize in economics. It tells how the prize, created by the Swedish central bank, emerged from a conflict between central bank orthodoxy and Sweden's social democracy. The aim was to use the halo of the Nobel brand to influence the future of Sweden and the rest of the developed world by enhancing the bank's authority and the prestige of market-friendly economics. And the strategy has worked spectacularly — with sometimes disastrous results for societies striving to cope with the requirements of economic theory and deregulated markets. Drawing on previously untapped archives and providing a unique analysis of the sway of prizewinners, the book offers an unprecedented account of the real-world consequences of economics and its greatest prize.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the landscape of copyright users at the international and regional levels and describes the radically different approach taken in this book from other works on copyright user rights. The chapter explains some of the benefits of approaching copyright user rights by focusing more strictly on concepts of private law rather than through concepts of public law and policy. It describes the international and multijurisdictional scope of the book and defines key concepts and terminology used throughout the book: ‘user rights’, ‘copyright users’, ‘copyright works’, ‘copyright holders’, ‘commercial copies of copyright works’, ‘personal property’, ‘technological protection measures’, and ‘technological measures’ and provides an overview of each chapter in the book.

Stone, Diane. Global Governance Depoliticized. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198748977.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
In the diverse ecosystem of global governance, this chapter focuses upon networks and partnerships as depoliticizing tactics of global governance. Global and regional public–private partnerships alongside transnational knowledge networks of experts, scientists, and other professionals have emerged from dissatisfaction with the limited policy capacities of traditional institutions—states, intergovernmental organizations, and multilateral agreements—to cope with global policy problems. As new governance institutions, these networks and partnerships are not only tools of depoliticization that take the management of global problems to distant and technocratic administrative realms. Viewed as a type of ‘experimentalist governance’, these networks also represent venues of creativity and innovation on the global governance landscape.

Breaden, Jeremy, and Roger Goodman. Family-Run Universities in Japan. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198863496.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Globally, private universities enrol one in three of all higher education students, while in Japan (which has the second largest higher education system in the world in terms of overall expenditure) almost 80 per cent of all university students attend private institutions. According to some estimates up to 40 per cent of these institutions are family businesses in the sense that members of a single family have substantive ownership or control over their operation. This book offers a detailed historical, sociological and ethnographic analysis of this important, but largely under-studied, category of private universities as family business. It examines how such universities in Japan have negotiated a period of major demographic decline since the 1990s: their experiments in restructuring and reform, the diverse experiences of those who worked and studied within them and, above all, their unexpected resilience. It argues that this resilience derives from a number of ‘inbuilt’ strengths of family business which are often overlooked in conventional descriptions of higher education systems and in predictions regarding the capacity of universities to cope with dramatic changes in their operating environment. The book offers a new perspective on recent changes in the Japanese higher education sector and contributes to an emerging literature on private higher education and family business across the world.

Jack, Jordynn. Inventing Gender. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038372.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter studies how individuals may invent alternative gendered identities from available gender topoi. Memoirs by Donna Williams and Dawn Prince-Hughes, along with blogs and online forum posts, reveal that autistic individuals offer alternative understandings of gender, using and combining disidentificatory or idiosyncratic terms such as nongendered and third gender or combining terms such as trans, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and androgyne. Indeed, when autistic individuals write about feeling nongendered or ungendered, they contest hegemonic genders and develop new types of gendered characters with which to present themselves and their experiences. Thus, genders can be invented using available terms, in that some autistic individuals employ a gender copia, or multiplicity of gendered topoi, to understand themselves and their roles in the world.

Hertz, Rosanna, and Margaret K. Nelson. Parents Make Contact with Genetic Strangers. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190888275.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes how parents use the number assigned to the donor to begin locating others who purchased vials from the same donor. It explains the steps parents make to form connections with others: signing up on a registry at a bank or an independent registry; providing information allowing someone else to make contact; reaching out to someone who has left identifying information; creating or joining an existing Facebook group; participating actively by making posts or commenting on the posts of others; engaging in private communications with network members (e.g., by text or phone); and meeting others in person once or more. The chapter discusses the motivations parents have for making this contact and the strategies they develop to cope with the experience of being pioneers in a land populated by genetic strangers. It also discusses serendipitous encounters among parents who have relied on the same donor.

Solimano, Andres, and Diego Calderón Guajardo. The Copper Sector, Fiscal Rules, and Stabilization Funds in Chile. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817369.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically Chile’s economy has been dominated by mineral products (mainly copper) as a source of exports and fiscal revenues. Copper prices and other commodity prices are often volatile. Since the 1980s the authorities have developed various mechanisms to cope with copper price shocks and dampen their effects on the business cycle. These mechanisms include a fiscal rule and a stabilization fund under a flexible exchange rate and an inflation-targeting regime. Apparently, this macro framework has been associated (causality is another matter) with reasonably good macro outcomes. However, this framework entails more discretion and less flexibility than often portrayed. (i) The mechanisms described include frequent revisions in the target fiscal surplus. (ii) Sovereign wealth funds, while defining rules for accumulating resources in good times, provide no rules for using them in bad times. (iii) They entail a possible bias towards over-accumulation of funds, with an ensuing opportunity cost.

Abstract:
The Andean Pact was founded in 1969 to build a common market in South America. Andean leaders copied the institutional and treaty design of the European Community, and in the 1970s, member states decided to add a tribunal, again turning to the European Community as its model. Since its first ruling in 1987, the Andean Tribunal of Justice (ATJ) has exercised authority over the countries which are members of the Andean Community: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru (formerly also Venezuela). It is now the third most active international court in the world, used by governments and private actors to protect their rights and interests in the region. This book investigates how a region with weak legal institutions developed an effective international rule of law, why the ATJ was able to induce widespread respect for Andean intellectual property rules but not other areas governed by regional integration rules, and what the ATJ's experience means for comparable international courts. It also assesses the Andean experience in order to reconsider the European Community system, exploring why the law and politics of integration in Europe and the Andes followed different trajectories. Finally, it provides a detailed analysis of the key factors associated with effective supranational adjudication. This book collects together previously published material by two leading interdisciplinary scholars of international law and politics, and is enhanced by three original chapters further reflecting on the Andean legal order.

Goldberg, Abbie E. Open Adoption and Diverse Families. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190692032.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book traces the experiences of diverse adoptive families—including lesbian, gay, and heterosexual parent families, and families who adopted through foster care and private adoption—as they manage birth family relationships across their children’s childhood. It explores the diversity among families in how open adoption is envisioned, enacted, and experienced over time. The author uses interview data from four time points spanning preadoption to 8 years postadoption to address a variety of questions, including: How do adoptive parents feel about openness when they first learn about it, and why do their feelings change over time? How do adoptive parents’ initial feelings about birth parents inform the types of relationships that they form with birth family? How do adoptive parents who strongly valued openness cope with and handle the disappointment of matching with birth parents who do not desire and/or are unable to enact a similar level of openness? What types of complex, unexpected, and nuanced trajectories of contact unfold over time between adoptive families and birth families? What types of boundary challenges occur between adoptive and birth family members, offline and online? How do adoptive parents talk about adoption with their children, and how does this vary depending on level and type of contact? How and to what extent do adoptive parents invoke environment versus genetics (i.e., birth family) in articulating children’s strengths, challenges, and physical features (e.g., height, skin color)? How do the experiences of adoptive parents differ by parent gender and sexual orientation?

Ortiz, Steven M. The Sport Marriage. University of Illinois Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252043161.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Male professional athletes captivate fans and profoundly influence today’s society as part of the $1.3 trillion global sport industry. Although these athletes’ lives and careers are widely reported, scholarly knowledge about the women who support them—their wives—is extremely limited. Because these women’s voices have historically been stifled, their marriages are shockingly misunderstood. Based on findings from the first and only longitudinal study on the sport marriage, this book corrects the abundance of misinformation reported by all forms of media, dispels undeserved stereotypes, and addresses inaccurate assumptions about the heteronormative sport marriage. It demonstrates how, despite major changes in society and sport since the end of the last century, the fundamental nature of the heteronormative sport marriage has not changed. Sport wives remain isolated and subordinate, even while they make significant contributions to their husbands’ careers. Identifying the sport marriage as a career-dominated marriage, the book allows us into these women’s public and private lives, including their need to conform to unwritten rules and codes, adapt to abundant power and control issues, cope with groupies from all walks of life, and find ways to deal with their oft-justified fears about their husbands’ infidelity. The book shares intimate stories about, and provides rare and unflinching insight into, what it is like to be married to these highly visible men, what it means to be a woman in the male-dominated world of professional sports, and why women remain in a sport marriage at great cost to themselves.
