Abstract:

Abstract:
Unique stressors can prompt child adjustment difficulties. Coping strategies and emotion regulation that impact the adjustment of children in general and military family children were investigated. Eighty children, 36 with deployed parents, their parents and teachers participated. All experienced stress related to hurricane Katrina. Correlational analyses indicate that children with more hurricane-related losses or moves, use some coping strategies less often; hurricane-related child distress is related to lower maternal support; and parental hurricane-related distress is associated with high levels of child externalizing problems. When dealing with general stressors, some coping strategies were positively associated with child internalizing problems. Analyses indicate that children with high emotion regulation and use of certain coping strategies experienced less externalizing problems, and children with deployed parents were not more emotionally dysregulated or maladjusted than children with non-deployed parents. Analyses did not confirm the hypothesized roles of parental support. Gender differences are also discussed.

Shen, Jiun J. "Collectivistic coping, allocentrism, and stress." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10252514.

Abstract:

Although numerous studies have identified the buffering effects of different coping strategies in stress and health research, few studies have considered the influence of cultural factors such as allocentrism (degree of collectivism). The present study examined whether the collectivistic coping strategies of support (support from racially similar others, support from experienced others, support from family) and avoidance (forbearance, fatalism) were associated with perceived and physiological stress levels, and whether allocentrism influenced this relationship, among a sample of low-income mothers. Results showed that higher use of support from family and lower use of avoidance coping were associated with lower levels of perceived stress and lower morning cortisol. Among women high in allocentrism, those who used support from experienced others had lower levels of perceived stress. These results contribute to our understanding of the role of culture in stress-coping research and how culture influences our physiological stress reactions.

Abstract:
Background: Internationally, high levels of stress and Psychological Distress have been identified in university employees. There have been calls to investigate stress over time and to include measures of coping and personality. This study provides the first longitudinal assessment of stress and Psychological Distress and examines the role of personality and coping in university employees during campus relocation Method: All 500 employees in Queen Margaret University were invited to complete standardised measures assessing Psychological Distress and sources of stress (HSE Indicator Tool) before (N = 143) and after relocation (N = 116). Participants also completed measures assessing Job Satisfaction, Personality, Coping and additional demographic information. Findings: High levels of Psychological Distress were identified before relocation (42%) and at 6 months (38%). Academic staff had a higher prevalence of Distress following relocation. Matched pair analyses (N = 48) showed the majority of stress sources remained stable from T1 to T2 with one significant decrease in reported levels of Control. Stressors explained 31.8% of the variance in Psychological Distress even when the effects of pre-specified variables (Neuroticism, Coping and age) were controlled. Employees with higher levels of Neuroticism and Emotion focused coping had significantly higher levels of Psychological Distress. Discussion and conclusions: Psychological Distress was higher than in population norms and other occupational groups. The primary stressors were identified and targets (based on national benchmarks) suggested. On-going monitoring and actions aimed at reducing stress and improving Psychological Distress are warranted. This is one of the first studies to assess the relationship between the management standards (indicated by the HSE Indicator tool) and stress outcome, and to use a matched participant design to assess change in the management standards. That the Management standards predict Psychological Distress lends support to the use of the management standards approach.

Abstract:
The aim of my study was to find out how the state of knowledge looks like regarding the subject of stress, using the research question; how is the topic of stress described and discussed by researchers in selected parts of the research literature? To find this out, I used qualitative method a selective research overview. Results and analysis were presented in three themes together with theories of coping and Sense of Coherence.   The main conclusion of this study is that the largest contributing factor to the occurrence of stress symptoms is about work – related stress, focusing on the work environment. By using a high level of Sense of Coherence individuals can develop useful coping – strategies for facing and dealing with the damaging stress.

Abstract:
Stress at work is related to a decrease in performance, psychological disorders and errors made under impaired conditions, and it affects one’s personal life. Police officers experience stress-provoking situations, such as high-speed chases, car accidents, shootings, and crimes in progress. They are also exposed to witnessing a range of traumatic events, such as death or injuries, as a part of their job. The consequences of stress for the police officers include physical and psychological disorders, decreased performance, and in some cases inability to perform their duties. The purpose of this study was to examine the occupational stress of police officers in a large metropolitan area in Western Canada; to examine the differences in stressful experiences of men and women police officers; and to explore the differences and patterns in coping strategies employed by men and women police officers in this sample. A package of surveys and questionnaires were administered to police officers from all of the sections of Operational Division of the Police department. The findings indicated that the officers experienced more stress from the organizational part of their work, than operational, and there was no difference found between men and women. Male and female officers also did not differ in the frequency of the use of coping strategies, except in the usage of instrumental support (for example, seeking assistance, information, or advice about what to do). Women used this coping strategy more often than men did. Men and women differed in patterns of coping with the stress. Implications for counselling and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this mastert thesis is to conduct an analysis of the professional stressors to which aviator pilots (instructors and cadets) are subject. This is an exploratory investigation that aims to study, in two groups of individuals, commercial airline pilots aircraft, with pilot instructor qualification and cadets. The research was carried out a transversal quantitative study, with the application of quiz with closed answers to both groups, in order to carry out a professional stress assessment. The quiz was constructed taking into account the research objectives, i. e. aims to approach the perception of the global stress level experienced in the activity, the identification of the perceived stress factors and the evaluation of the coping strategies to control or reduce the stress experienced. The results show that, in general, pilots perceive higher stress levels than cadets. Regarding the study of potential sources of stress, the perspectives evaluated show that, for the most part, instructor pilots perceive higher levels of stress. Regarding the coping strategies, cadets use them more frequently, for control or reduction of perceived stress.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Top level sport for people with a disability is becoming more competitive, creating an environment in which the rewards for success and the disappointments associated with failure are often great. These are factors which clearly have the potential to place extreme psychological demands on sport performers with a disability. However, few investigations have specifically examined how athletes with a disability respond in highly stressful sporting situations. This thesis, therefore, reports 3 separate studies to investigate stress and coping in wheelchair sport participants. Study 1 examined pre-competition temporal patterning of anxiety and self-confidence in 103 wheelchair sport participants at 3 time periods preceding competition (1 week, 2 hours and 30 minutes before). The findings suggested that wheelchair sport participants show a similar pre-competition anxiety response to non-disabled sport participants. However, there were some differences, particularly in the reduction in self-confidence immediately prior to competition. The purpose of Study 2, therefore, was to explore possible: reasons as to why self-confidence may decrease in wheelchair sport participants" immediately prior to competition. Specifically, Study 2 considered the influence of disability status (i.e., possessing and not possessing a disability) on appraisal of a specific important competitive event, and how appraisal may be influenced by various psychosocial factors. The sample comprised of 75 wheelchair and 44 able-bodied sport participants. The findings showed that wheelchair and able-bodied sport participants had similar psychosocial resources and appraisal patterns; however, different factors predicted an important competitive event as challenging. Study 3 explored this further by investigating, via in-depth qualitative interviews, the sources of stress and coping responses in 10 elite male wheelchair basketball players. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in combination to enable examination of stress source characteristics (degree of challenge, threat, harm, severity, control and frequency) and coping details (effectiveness and frequency). Whilst many of the findings were similar to those previously reported for elite able-bodied figure skaters, there were some differences. These differences appeared to relate to various disability factors and also the fact that the study was unique in examining team sport participants. Furthermore, the unique nature of the study obtaining information on stress source characteristics, and effectiveness and extent of use of coping strategies, proved to be extremely useful in gaining a more in-depth understanding of the complex stress-coping process. Finally, the findings from the three studies reported in this thesis enabled a model of stress and coping for wheelchair sport participants to be developed. In summary, the studies presented used a range of methodologies to enable an in-depth understanding of stress and coping in wheelchair sport, whilst simultaneously supporting and extending previous research in the sport domain.

The purpose of the present study was to examine what Swedish soccer referees perceive as stressful and how the referees cope with the perceived stressors. Further purposes were to examine how the perceived stress affect the health of the referees and what affect it has on the behavior of the referees. In the study 10 Swedish elite soccer referees, both males and females, with refereeing assignments in the Allsvenskan or Superettan in the 2011 season participated. A semi structured interview guide was used during either telephone- or personal interviews. The interviews were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. The results are primarily in line with previous research of this field. Further, the results show that the participating referees does not experience a great deal of negative influence on their health stemming from stress. The results of the study are further discussed in regards to previous research in the field as well as in conjunction with the methodological questions that arose during the study. Suggestions for future research and practical applications of the results are also given.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: The nursing profession involves meetings and situations which can be stressful. The work environment can cause additional stress in the form of time pressure, lack of support from colleagues, management or disgruntled family members and patients. This places the nurse in a position that requires a sharpened ability to handle stress. It can become overwhelming and unmanageable and cause a serious threat to the nurse's health and wellbeing. To handle stress the nurses uses different coping strategies. Aim: The aim of the review was to gain a better understanding of how nurses deal with occupational stress. Method: A systematic literature overview study based on eleven articles, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Results: Nurses deal with stress in different ways based on their own resources. The results were divided in to seven themes: Seeking social support for emotional expression, Planning and problem solving to reduce stress, Setting boundaries to alleviate stress, Create time and space for recovery, Create time for reflection and guidance, Manage what cannot be affected and Creating distance in order to gain perspective. Conclusion: Perceived stress differs wide between nurses. A great responsibility therefore rests on the nurse herself to learn to manage her stress. The employer can create supportive conditions but the nurse must learn to master their own stress.

Vidare forskning bör fokusera stressupplevelser hos sjuksköterskor inom specifika områden i sjukvården.

Stress and the symptoms of stress are continuing to increase among the total Swedish population. This is particularly visible in healthcare-professions. Stress related diseases like coronary disease and depression leads to increasing numbers of sick-leaves. The nurse has a high risk of experiencing stress in the workplace and the effects of stress on the nurse stands in relation to her appraisal of the situation and the opportunities of coping visible to her. An ineffective coping pattern can result in severe consequences both in health and in social life. A literature review was conducted with the aim to identify stressful events in the nurse’s workplace as well as the appraisal of the same and coping strategies used. Results indicate that workload is the main-source of stress and is affected by understaffing and increases in the number of nursing-tasks. The more stress the nurse is exposed to, the less problem-focused coping is used. Conflicts increase the stress at the work-place at the same time as support from colleagues is used as a copingstrategy. Nurses need to widen their knowledge concerning stress and coping. There is also a need for more knowledge and understanding among managers, of stressful situations experienced by nurses. Implications for further research should focus on stressful experiences among nurses in specific areas in healthcare.

Abstract:
How police officers deal with stress greatly affects how they carry out their daily lives and how they treat family and friends. In this study 2 police departments were issued surveys to see how the police officers experienced stress. Questions on the survey asked the officers about the sources of stress, sources of support, and which methods they used to alleviate the stress. The surveys were given to the respective departments over a period of 2 months, and 132 surveys were returned. The statistical analysis performed showed danger was a factor when examining stress. Administration support was found to be a source of support.

Abstract:
Stress has lasting and sometimes fatal effects on the law enforcement community, which can compromise the well-being of police officers. To date, there is little research on factors that influence the level of stress in police officers. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to investigate the relationship of gender, used coping mechanisms, and levels of organizational and operational stress among police officers who have and have not received stress management training. Bandura's social learning theory and Lazarus and Folkman's theory of cognitive appraisal provided the theoretical foundation. Cross-sectional survey data from a convenience sample of 134 male and female police officers were collected using the Brief Cope, the Operational and Organizational Police Stress Questionnaire, and a demographic survey. An independent samples t test and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. According to study findings, officers who received stress management training demonstrated a higher use of adaptive coping mechanisms compared to those who did not receive training. In addition, gender and use of maladaptive coping predicted level of stress among officers. Evidently, receiving stress management training was useful for these participating police officers, and these findings suggest that the training may have positive demonstrable effects for other police officers. This study promotes positive social change by increasing knowledge and awareness of the value that stress management has in reducing level of stress and use of maladaptive coping in police officers, thus empowering the psychological needs of officers while endorsing public safety at the individual and societal level.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the connection between self-esteem, aggression and stress coping of cardiovascular patients. 161 people participated in the research: 86 men (53.4%) and 75 women (46.6%). 78 patients in rehabilitation formed the experimental group. The control group was formed from 83 healthy people. The age of the participants ranged from 19 to 75 (50,81 ± 12,75). During the research, the characteristics and connection between self-esteem, stress coping and agression were analysed in both groups. For evaluating stress coping strategies, the methodology for evaluation of stress coping by Ž. Grakauskas and G. Valickas was used. For self-esteem, The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was applied, while Bass-Darky questionnaire was employed in order to analyse aggressiveness. The research results have demonstrated that self-esteem indicators were lower for the cardio-vascular patients than for healthy respondents. Besides, there is no difference between physical and verbal aggression characteristics of cardiovascular patients and healthy people. Both, the experimental group and the control group, use the avoidance strategy and the strategies related to social support in coping with stress. The usage of problem-oriented stress coping strategies of cardiovascular patients is not related to self-esteem indicators. Female cardiovascular patients exhibit lower physical and verbal aggression indicators, which are associated to higher self-esteem indicators... [to full text]

Gunnarsson, A & Henriksson, A (2008) Lärare, stress och coping: Om passiva och aktiva copingstrategier. B-uppsats i pedagogik 7,5 hp. Nyckelord: Stress; lärare; copingstrategier; aktiv coping; passiv coping.

Abstract:
Class of 2010 Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To determine the perceived level of stress pharmacy students experience related to academics and the methods they use to relieve that stress. METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-‐sectional study. Questionnaires were administered to first, second, and third year University of Arizona College of Pharmacy students during regularly scheduled class time. Data on perceived level of stress, sources of stress, and methods of relieving stress were collected and analyzed. Data on average hours worked per week, marital status, number of children, age, gender, and number of professional organizations involved in were also collected. RESULTS: The stress survey was completed by a total of 182 students at the College of Pharmacy. The overall stress score was highest in the second year students, although the total score was relatively low (total score 18.7; p=0.04). The four items that resulted in the highest stress scores were exams and/or grades (stress score ≥ 2.1), amount of class material (stress score ≥ 1.8), financial responsibilities (stress score ≥ 1.8) and lack of free time (stress score ≥ 1.6). Stressful situations that the students felt the most during the semester were thinking about the things that they had to accomplish (score ≥ 3.2) and having to control the way they spend their time (score ≥ 2.6). Common stress relievers were spending time with family, friends and pets ( ≥ 27%), watching television or movies ( ≥ 22%) and exercising ( ≥ 17%). Of those students who exercised, >44% felt it helped relieve stress very much. CONCLUSIONS: Little difference in levels of stress was observed between the classes. Based on the results, pharmacy students at the University of Arizona do not appear to be excessively stressed. Spending time with family/friends/pets, watching TV/DVDs, and exercising were the most common ways of relieving stress.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The premenstrual syndrome (PMS) continues to be an enigma for many: those women who report PMS, for professionals who attempt to treat premenstrual symptoms, and for researchers attempting to identify PMS and to compare treatments. The present study investigated the responses from 86 subjects between the ages 30-45 for their perceptions of daily stress and coping styles by PMS level. Three levels of PMS were formulated by subject responses to the questionnaire (a) PMS for scores within the criteria, (b) Non-PMS for scores lower than the criteria, and (c) Psy-Non-PMS for certain scores higher than the criteria with a psychological, or neurotic, profile. Hassle intensity (daily stress) and coping style, whether problem-focused (P) or emotion-focused (E), were assessed by questionnaire. In addition, help seeking behavior, i.e., whether a woman sought help from a doctor in the past twelve months, was examined but did not significantly relate to level of PMS, hassle intensity, or coping style. Psy-Non-PMS women reported perceiving significantly more hassles and significantly greater use of four of the E coping styles, Detachment, Focusing on the Positive, Self-blame, and Keep to Self, than the Non-PMS women. PMS women endorsed perception of significantly more hassles and significantly greater use of two of the E coping styles, Detachment and Keep to Self, than the Non-PMS women. These E coping styles are consonant with detached, avoidant, escapist, and self-deriding coping mechanisms, typical of depressed and anxious persons. There was some difficulty in differentiating the PMS group from the Psy-Non-PMS group. Only one coping style, Focusing on the Positive, was endorsed by the Psy-Non-PMS group significantly more than the PMS group. Further statistical analysis of the data could determine psychological/behavioral PMS subtypes as distinct from physiological PMS subtypes, providing more clearly defined PMS groups. Future research involving a carefully controlled study for determining PMS levels and utilizing psychotherapy as well as specified medications for treatment of PMS is indicated.

Full text
Abstract:
The stressors facing people who must deal with a terminal diagnosis and palliative care are complex and varied. However, relatively little is known about the manner in which people cope with these stressors. Additionally, there has been little research into those characteristics that may predispose individuals to cope in particular ways. Therefore, this study investigates the process of coping with various end-of-life stressors, while also considering individual differences in how people prefer to cope. Fifty-two people who were receiving palliative care for advanced cancer underwent in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The interviews considered the tendency to monitor (focus on) or blunt (avoid) threat-relevant cues when dealing with stress, and whether this tendency was predictive of variations in actual coping behaviour, or variations in the experience of distress. Stress and coping were examined within three distinct conceptual dimensions comprising physical symptoms, social issues, and existential concerns. Specifically, participants were asked to identify their most significant problem in each dimension, and then to report how they coped with those problems. Their coping responses were then coded as reflecting either "problem-focused," "emotion-focused approach" or "emotion-focused avoidance". The results revealed that, unlike other health-related research, the tendency to "monitor" or "blunt" did not predict variations in the experience of psychological distress or variations in self-reported coping behaviour. Across the three dimensions of stress, physical symptoms received the highest severity ratings, but the dimensions were significantly intercorrelated with one another. A consistent individual difference was also noted in terms of the numbers of coping strategies participants generated to manage stressors. That is, participants who reported using a high number of coping strategies to manage a social stressor also reported using a high number of strategies in response to stressors in the other two dimensions. Participants generally used a combination of specific coping strategies to deal with their stressors. However, there were clear differences across dimensions of stress in the relative use of problem-focused versus emotion-focused strategies. Problem-focused coping was uncommon for existential issues while emotion-focused approach and emotion-focused avoidance strategies were used less frequently for physical stressors. Coping efforts were not related to psychological distress or to discrete anxiety and depressive disorders, which were diagnosed in 44.2% of the participants.

Abstract:
Children’s experiences of stress and coping have been underexplored in comparison to studies with adults and adolescents. Of those studies that have been conducted on children, many have utilised checklists originally developed by and for adults or adolescents or developed for children without consulting with them. It is only relatively recently that children have begun to be consulted about issues that concern them. While there have been studies exploring specific aspects of children’s lives, there is no evidence of a study that has asked children, living around a country, not in known stressful situations, to talk about their stress and coping. There has been no prior research of this nature undertaken in New Zealand. This study explores New Zealand/Aotearoa1 children’s experiences of stress and coping in their lives. A total number of 171 children, aged 8 to 12, from 29 schools throughout the country, were invited to take part in the study. There were two phases of data collection and the second phase included the administration of a coping checklist which was developed out of the data from Phase One. Overall 62 participants engaged in an individual interview and the rest took part in focus groups of primarily four children each. Discussion was facilitated using informal guidelines and all the individual interviews and focus groups were audio-taped, transcribed and analysed using a Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology. Four categories of stress and 29 stressors were identified, the majority of which cluster around children’s two primary contexts, the school and family. The results demonstrate that many of the challenges children identify are linked to the stress experienced by the significant adults in their lives including their teachers but primarily, their parents. While they could identify what their parents and other significant adults in their lives find stressful, they were unsure, and in some cases doubtful, that adults were aware of what children find stressful or if they could identify the signs that a child was experiencing stress. The 20 coping strategies that were identified were ordered into four categories of coping with the primary modality being internal behavioural or cognitive strategies. Children have explicit and articulate views on what they experience as stressful; how they are vicariously affected by global stressors and what they perceive the significant adults in their lives experience as stressful. Most children have a broad range of coping strategies that they can utilise and most identified their mother as part of their support system. There are challenges however, when stressors are experienced in the family and children have to rely heavily on their internal coping strategies. The small number of children, who could not identify a close family member or a member of the school personnel as support, were noticeable in their vulnerability. The participants provide valuable insight into the world of childhood and inform us as to what is needed to ensure as strong a mental health foundation as possible so that they emerge into adolescence and adulthood able to participate as fully and effectively as possible.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to integrate the divorce outcome data concerning children within the stress and coping mechanisms paradigm. The effects of divorce on children are reviewed, as are the major constructs of stress-coping theory. A study is conducted to demonstrate the empirical utility of the theoretical integration of the two domains. The coping resources, styles and efforts of 71 elementary school children from divorced and intact homes were investigated. Data analyses demonstrated that children from divorced homes had lower levels of psychological coping resources, and less effective coping styles and efforts, thus sustaining the theoretical integration. Other significant results revealed developmental trends for some aspects of coping resources and coping styles, and correlations between coping resources and efforts, thereby supporting important conceptualizations in stress-coping theory. Speculations concerning the long-term effects of divorce, differential effects of divorce on boys and girls and recommendations for future investigations are made.
