There is a continuing need to make new antitubercular drugs due to development of resistance towards present drugs. To do this, series of pyruvate hydrazones (PVAHs) and their respective Cu(II) complexes and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized and fully characterised. Variable temperature NMR studies of PVAHs indicate the presence of E and Z isomers in the solution. Two compounds, [(C12)2-imyH]2[CuCl4] and [(C12)2-imyH]2 [PdCl4] were structurally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Tetra-chloropallate adopts a square-planar geometry while tetrachlorocuprate has a distorted tetrahedral structure. Photochemical formation of copper(I) has been systematically studied for copper(II) complexes in different conditions (changing pH and ligand concentration). Bathocuproine method was used to determine copper(I) concentration. For the 1:1 Cu(II) complexes (CuL), the Cu(I) quantum yields at 313 nm (ΦCu(I),CuL) are in the sequence (25 0C, ionic strength = 0.10 M): 2-AIBA > β-ala > ala, 2-ABA, nor > val > 4-ABA > gly, ranging from 0.2
