The electrochemistry of solid electrodes of charge transfer complexes of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and copper complexes with nitrogen containing chelates, such and dipyridylamine (dpaH), bipyridyl (bpy) and 1,10-dimethyl-2,9-phenanthroline (dmp), has been investigated with cyclic voltammetry. The bis 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (1,4,7-TTCN) complexes of iron, cobalt, nickel and copper are reported in this work. Their properties have been examined using computer-controlled electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. These TTCN complexes form readily, are unusually symmetrical and support electron transfer reactions at the metal center. The cobalt(II) complex is octahedral, low spin and symmetrical. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) were evaluated for the measurement of selenium (Se) and Se stable isotope ratios. GCMS and ICPMS were found to be accurate for quantitative Se analysis in biological matrices by isotope dilution using Se-78 and Se-76 as internal standards, respectively. A higher precision was obtained for ICPMS than GCMS enabling a smaller quantity of the tracer to be administered to subjects in labelling experiments.
