Abstract:
The bioleaching of copper ore from the Caraiba Mine was assessed. A microorganism, Acidiothiobacillus ferrooxidans, was isolated from samples collected directly in acid mining drainage in a gold mine tailings pound and used in the bioleaching of the copper sulfide ore. This ore is composed mainly of 28% of oxidized species, 43% of secondary sulfides and 24% of primary sulfide. The shaking flasks experiments with the Caraiba ore showed copper chemical leaching of about 37% and copper bioleaching of about 60% within 60 days at low temperature and native microorganism.

This paper presents the sulfidisation promotion effect of ammonium sulfate on the sulfidisation flotation of both malachite and copper oxide ores. Copper oxide ores are commonly difficult-to-float due to its molecular structure, and adding sodium sulfide as activator is necessary; however, its dosage to the flotation pulp must be strictly controlled, as it is also a powerful depressant for copper sulfide minerals, and will, if in excess, depress the activated copper oxide minerals. This depression will be alleviated while ammonium sulfate is added, as it accelerates the speed of sulfidisation,

Flotation tailings are hazardous due to physical and chemical instability and are currently considered one of the main pollution concerns of mining industry. Most of these tailings are fine-grained residues with low copper content (0.1-0.8%) and include toxic compounds, such as heavy metals, arsenic, and flotation reagents, among others. Another hazard is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) due to biological oxidation of tailings. This information includes data that covered materials as carbon steel on the low end of marine corrosion resistance, to data on the more resistant copper and copper base alloys, stainless steels, nickel base alloys, and up the ladder to the most resistant material such as titanium and alloys of Ni-Cr-Mo family. This paper presents corrosion data on a

Abstract The Instrument Society of America (ISA) Standard S71.04-1985, Environmental Conditions for Process Measurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants, lists gaseous contaminants which may adversely affect electronic/electrical instruments. This standard lists gas concentrations and the corresponding copper reactivity levels. Copper and silver coupons, in environmentally-controlled chambers, were exposed to the four main ISA "Group A" gases; hydrogen sulfide (K2S) , sulfur dioxide (SO2), chlorine (Cl2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Contaminant gas concentrations were at the Class G2

Abstract This study demonstrates that the mechanisms of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) by Desulfovibrio vulgaris, a sulfate reducing bacterium (SRB), against X65 carbon steel and pure copper belong to two different types of MIC. Type I MIC involves extracellular electron transfer across cell walls of sessile cells in biofilms. This type of MIC is also called extracellular electron transfer MIC (EET-MIC). Type II MIC, also known as metabolite MIC (M-MIC), is caused by secreted corrosive metabolites that are more concentrated locally under a biofilm. The corrosive metabolites secre

Abstract The biofouling characteristics of Copper alloys have made them one of the most recommended types for cooling systems using natural estuary waters. However, there have been cases of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) in these alloys, caused by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB). This article presents the results obtained from an evaluation of MIC carried out on two copper - based alloys: “Al-Brass” ASTM B-111 UNS C68700 and Cu-Ni 90:10 ASTM B-111 UNS C70600 exposed to the waters of Lake Maracaibo. Missouri S and T investigated alternative new methods to the existing practice of measuring the structure-to-electrolyte potential to assess the level of cathodic protection (CP) of a buried pipeline. The measurement of a negative 850 mV DC pipeline to soil potential relative to a copper/copper sulfate reference electrode has been used for decades as a threshold value for sufficient CP to reduce external corrosion to an acceptable rate ( less than 0.001 per year). However, there is a need for an alternative method that more accurately depicts the corrosion rates of buried pipeline.

Cathodic protection is one of the main modes of corrosion prevention for structures in navigable waterways. The rectifier output voltage must be in a specific range to provide effective protection against corrosion. This effort was designed to monitor, predict, and stabilize the efficacy of multiple cathodic protection systems. Copper/copper-sulfate half-cell electrode sensors, water quality sensors, and gauges for rectifier output were connected to modems at multiple locks so the data could be analyzed to create a predictive maintenance algorithm.
