Abstract:
This study deals with Coraline (2002), the novel by Neil Gaiman, and Coraline (2009), the animated adaptation directed by Henry Selick based on Gaiman’s book. While Gothic stories often emphasize and question human morality, children’s literature usually holds a moralizing value. Neil Gaiman’s Coraline presents a story within the genre of children’s literature that seems to be deeply rooted in the Gothic tradition. Some of the fundamental gothic elements in Coraline’s story are the presence of ghosts, grotesque beings, and the existence of a parallel and dark universe that serves as the setting for the story. Coraline deals with anxieties related with personal development, growing up, and the environments that surround her. Gothic content within both the book and the film contribute to the undermining of the idealization of Coraline’s family, her own process of growing up, and her coping with moving to a completely different place. The creation of the gothic world is exploited in both works to represent Coraline’s coming-of-age experience and her conflict with her family. However, despite Selick’s film being a faithful and well-delivered adaptation of Gaiman’s novel, there are considerable differences that affect how the audience interprets Coraline as a character and her story, which this analysis will highlight.

Abstract:
Abstract Magical realism, as a narrative mode or genre in adults’ literature, has been in vogue since its revivifying with the publication of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967). However, the depiction of the genre in children’s and juvenile literature is a new trend; the presence of its elements have been traced and proved feasibly applicable in the interpretation of recent children’s fiction such as David Almond’s Skelling (1998). In this regard, the main concern of the present article is to sift the characteristic features of magical realism within Neil Gaiman’s Coraline (2002) through the application of Wendy B. Faris’s theoretical framework of the genre therewith Tzvetan Todorov’s definition of the fantastic in order to introduce the novel as an exemplar of magical realism in the domain of children’s literature.

A történet olvasható gyermekeknek szóló meseként, azonban a felnőtt olvasók számára is mély jelentéssel bír, ezért a művet a gyermeki és a felnőtt nézőpont közötti átmenetiség tükrében elemzem.

Abstract:
© 2017. Abstract:
Between 2003 and 2004, Neil Gaiman wrote a short story called ‘The problem of Susan’. In it, a young journalist has a dream in which she is Susan Pevensie and the world of Narnia has become dark and terrifying. In this article, the author argues that Gaiman’s preoccupation with and intertextual re-envisioning of Narnia goes beyond ‘The problem of Susan’, and that his children’s book, Coraline (2002), can be viewed partly as a rewriting of C.S. Lewis’s The lion, the witch and the wardrobe ([1950] 2001). The author further shows that the two books have many shared aspects, but that Gaiman transforms these aspects to make the fantasy world in Coraline an unsteady, threatening and even horrifying version of the bright and inviting world of Narnia. The author also argues that Gaiman’s purpose in so doing is to defy and subtly criticise what he views as Lewis’s attempts to encourage children to remain innocent and childlike.

Abstract:
Coraline by Neil Gaiman has several characters who in many ways break gender norms. The main protagonist of the novel, Coraline, acts more in accordance with masculine gender norms, and the mother figures are mothers who do not fully conform to the traditional mother role. The purpose of this study is to look at how Coraline and the mother figures perform their gender, and in which ways this breaks with or aligns with traditional gender norms. The analytical approach is based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, and on masculine and feminine gender schemas defined by John Stephens. For the analysis of motherhood, gender performativity has also been used, and works by Adrienne Rich and Einat Natalie Palkovich. This study shows that the protagonists challenge traditional gender role norms of masculinity and femininity, whereof motherhood is part. The study also shows that there is a lack of female role models for the young protagonist, and that acting according to masculine gender norms is desirable and necessary in the novel. But for the mothers, breaking gender norms is undesirable, dangerous, and even punished. A conclusion of the study is that even though Coraline appears to be a feminist novel, the underlying message is not entirely so.

This master s thesis experimented the fabulation to think encounters regarding teachers formation. Such encounters were produced by affects (SPINOZA, 2013) triggered by the animation Coraline (2009). The encounters dialogue with visual diaries were constructed during the Supervised Teaching Practice in the Visual Arts Teaching Major. The memory that I have fabricated was not the one about a recall or a review of what the teaching formation diaries contained, but it was the creation, which might have come from these registers. Moved by Deleuze s (1997) and Deleuze e Guattari s (1995) thoughts, I have produced, with connections from the past, something in constant development, an anti-narrative, about to happen, breaking the time sequences of events. The secret world constructed in this research is not about another world, but this world, here and now, what happens in complete immanence, all that might become. I operated with concepts such as affects and encounters to trace the sewing of this research, to map this rhizome, where methodic thinking is defeated by disorder towards the creation of new territories. The experimentation through the memory was the fabulation, which invades the character Coraline s quotidian and elements present in the pedagogical diaries. The text was built in the mix of such borders, in the teaching living based on the fabulation I produced in this research.

This thesis aims to examine the update that the myth of Orpheus has suffered in the movie "Coraline" an adaptation of the British Neil Gaiman s novel "Coraline" (2003) , through a comparative and dialogic analysis, based on Bakhtin s concepts of dialogism, carnivalization and grotesque, between the original myth and its degradation in the film work. The proposal of a dialogic study between the myth of Orpheus and the movie happens not only because of the dessacralization that the myth has suffered, but also for the common theme of the katabasis, since Coraline and Orpheu made it to rescue something that was taken from them, whether it was the loved one or the recognition of the family and own values. After this analysis, based on Mircea Eliade s, Pierre Brunel s and João Batista de Brito s studies, the double was shown as an increase that the myth has suffered on this update and the reason why there was the manifestation of the double in this work was elucidated.

Abstract:
This essay examines Neil Gaiman’s Coraline from a psychoanalytic perspective, with focus on the formation of the super ego. While the young girl’s identity formation has been examined before, the general focus is often oedipal. In this essay, I choose to step away from the oedipal and examine the psychosymbolism throughout the novella. The aim is to see how Coraline’s own psychic development manifests itself in the other world. The characters in the novella are looked upon as representations of different aspects of Coraline’s psyche. Her actions with them are considered to be representations of internal conflicts or resolutions. In short, this essay examines how the novella portrays the psychodevelopmental nature of the child's identity formation.

Abstract:
This study uses thing theory as a focal lens to examine the way subject/object relationships are portrayed within two fantasy novels— Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Hiromi Goto’s Half World— that have elements of horror in them. It takes into consideration the tropes and stereotypes present within dark stories for children and uses thing theory to look at how subjects and objects are introduced to one another within a horror setting and, consequently, how they transform each other through either use or misuse. This allows for a fuller understanding of how subjects and objects transgress and mutate within the horror genre. It provides an alternative direction from which to approach the analysis of character development by understanding the ways in which child protagonists are transformed by objects and how they, in turn, can manipulate things and situations to shift the balance of power in their favour. The findings provide an alternative approach to the further study of gender representations and cultural identities in horror fiction for children and young adults.

Abstract Coralline hydroxyapalite (Pro-Osteon 500, Interpore International, Irvine, CA) is an artificial bone substitute that has been approved by the FDA since 1993. Despite previous in vitro and animal studies on the mechanical behavior of coralline hydroxyapatite [1–3], its mechanical properties are not well understood. Further, the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of coralline hydroxyapatite is unknown. Knowledge of this relationship is important in determining the optimal clinical use of this bone substitute.
