Abstract:
Coraline by Neil Gaiman has several characters who in many ways break gender norms. The main protagonist of the novel, Coraline, acts more in accordance with masculine gender norms, and the mother figures are mothers who do not fully conform to the traditional mother role. The purpose of this study is to look at how Coraline and the mother figures perform their gender, and in which ways this breaks with or aligns with traditional gender norms. The analytical approach is based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, and on masculine and feminine gender schemas defined by John Stephens. For the analysis of motherhood, gender performativity has also been used, and works by Adrienne Rich and Einat Natalie Palkovich. This study shows that the protagonists challenge traditional gender role norms of masculinity and femininity, whereof motherhood is part. The study also shows that there is a lack of female role models for the young protagonist, and that acting according to masculine gender norms is desirable and necessary in the novel. But for the mothers, breaking gender norms is undesirable, dangerous, and even punished. A conclusion of the study is that even though Coraline appears to be a feminist novel, the underlying message is not entirely so.

This master s thesis experimented the fabulation to think encounters regarding teachers formation. Such encounters were produced by affects (SPINOZA, 2013) triggered by the animation Coraline (2009). The encounters dialogue with visual diaries were constructed during the Supervised Teaching Practice in the Visual Arts Teaching Major. The memory that I have fabricated was not the one about a recall or a review of what the teaching formation diaries contained, but it was the creation, which might have come from these registers. Moved by Deleuze s (1997) and Deleuze e Guattari s (1995) thoughts, I have produced, with connections from the past, something in constant development, an anti-narrative, about to happen, breaking the time sequences of events. The secret world constructed in this research is not about another world, but this world, here and now, what happens in complete immanence, all that might become. I operated with concepts such as affects and encounters to trace the sewing of this research, to map this rhizome, where methodic thinking is defeated by disorder towards the creation of new territories. The experimentation through the memory was the fabulation, which invades the character Coraline s quotidian and elements present in the pedagogical diaries. The text was built in the mix of such borders, in the teaching living based on the fabulation I produced in this research.

This thesis aims to examine the update that the myth of Orpheus has suffered in the movie "Coraline" an adaptation of the British Neil Gaiman s novel "Coraline" (2003) , through a comparative and dialogic analysis, based on Bakhtin s concepts of dialogism, carnivalization and grotesque, between the original myth and its degradation in the film work. The proposal of a dialogic study between the myth of Orpheus and the movie happens not only because of the dessacralization that the myth has suffered, but also for the common theme of the katabasis, since Coraline and Orpheu made it to rescue something that was taken from them, whether it was the loved one or the recognition of the family and own values. After this analysis, based on Mircea Eliade s, Pierre Brunel s and João Batista de Brito s studies, the double was shown as an increase that the myth has suffered on this update and the reason why there was the manifestation of the double in this work was elucidated.

Abstract:
This essay examines Neil Gaiman’s Coraline from a psychoanalytic perspective, with focus on the formation of the super ego. While the young girl’s identity formation has been examined before, the general focus is often oedipal. In this essay, I choose to step away from the oedipal and examine the psychosymbolism throughout the novella. The aim is to see how Coraline’s own psychic development manifests itself in the other world. The characters in the novella are looked upon as representations of different aspects of Coraline’s psyche. Her actions with them are considered to be representations of internal conflicts or resolutions.   In short, this essay examines how the novella portrays the psychodevelopmental nature of the child's identity formation.

Abstract:
This study uses thing theory as a focal lens to examine the way subject/object relationships are portrayed within two fantasy novels— Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Hiromi Goto’s Half World— that have elements of horror in them. It takes into consideration the tropes and stereotypes present within dark stories for children and uses thing theory to look at how subjects and objects are introduced to one another within a horror setting and, consequently, how they transform each other through either use or misuse. This allows for a fuller understanding of how subjects and objects transgress and mutate within the horror genre. It provides an alternative direction from which to approach the analysis of character development by understanding the ways in which child protagonists are transformed by objects and how they, in turn, can manipulate things and situations to shift the balance of power in their favour. The findings provide an alternative approach to the further study of gender representations and cultural identities in horror fiction for children and young adults.

Abstract:

Known nationally as a poet, Cora Coralina started her life in literature with chronicle stories, using the journalism genre as a type of laboratory to perfect her writing, acquiring her own style. Only later she began writing in verses, through poems anchored in her experience, observation and memory. She incorporated her chronicle verve into her verses, and was always paying attention to the obscure and everyday life, in a way that her poems also constitute authentic chronicles, not only from Goiás, but from the Imperial Brazil, recently turned into a republic. From that, I propose in this paper to approach the work of Cora Coralina, with the purpose to bring to light her work in writing chronicles, as well as point out how the founding principles of the making of a chronicle are intrinsically and evidently connected to her poetic work. It is a documental and bibliographic research, made from the relation between the literary theories and her own literary text. In order to develop this research, the paper was structured into two chapters. In the first, with the goal of shedding light into how Cora Coralina practiced the genre of chronicles, we will look into the works Solidão, and Coisas de São Paulo, and lastly the poem Beco de Vila Rica, examining them to point out the different phases in her writing. In order to follow these phases, we collated these texts looking to evince the differences between her initial work and the work of her maturity, as well as the manner in which the poet incorporates into her poems the chronicle experience. In this chapter, we also indicate that the incursion of Cora Coralina into poetry is related to the readings that she had related to the Brazilian Modernismo movement. In order to examine how does Cora Coralina’s chronicle poetry relates to Modernismo, we observe the confluence between her work and that of other Brazilian poets from the same time, such as Manuel Bandeira and Mario Quintana. In the second chapter, we show that her poetry in intimately connected to the city of Goiás, and that it happens due to a process that chronicizes her city and her time. To make that analysis, we chose the poems: “Minha cidade”; “Moinho do tempo”; “Antiguidades”; “Escola de mestre Silvina” e “Coisas de Goiás: Maria”. From these poems we verified aspects such as the process of interweaving between the poet and the city, the record of historical facts and of the silent proceedings of the city of Goiás, as well as the educational methods, and still observe the approximation of her poetry to the small facts, representing the daily, the history and the inhabitants of Goiás. Therefore, we consider that the poems from Coralina make up true chronicles of the vilaboense society, the city of Goiás and the eccentric people from that city.

This thesis was developed in accordance with the socio-cognitive line of Critical Discourse Analysis and deals with the forms of biographical representation of poet Cora Coralina constructed by she herself and by other authors. The general objective of this thesis is to contribute to analytical studies of texts written by Brazilian regional authors. The specific objectives are: 1) to examine the poet's biography based on a base text and selected intertexts of her poetic works; 2) to analyze the linguistic expressions of intertexts selected from studies of other authors; and 3) to clip other intertexts of authors whose evaluative representations aid in historically reconstructing the context of Cora Coralina's production of her poetry. Based on the assumption of dialectics between the social and the individual, one recognizes that Cora Coralina's poetry is guided by cultural values of the social memory of the groups with which she lived in Glose proximity, in or out of the city of Goiás, and the theoretic-analytical procedure adopted was the interrelation among the society, cognition, and discourse categories. Findings of the analysis indicated that: 1) although the social guides her individual, there is opposition between traditional cultural values and those represented by Cora Coralina; 2) two social groups stand out in Goiás - the conservative and the innovative - which proves the dynamics of the culture in each contemporaneity; 3) the poet's lexical choices are guided by what she experienced within her social group; 4) the evaluative representations' of her autobiography confront the past and the contemporaneity of her poetic produefion and focus personal experiences of privations which, by means of passionate modalizations, ramify into lack and neediness

Burdett, Heidi L. "DMSP dynamics in marine coralline algal habitats." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4108/.

Full text
Abstract:
Dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) is a dimethylated sulphur compound that appears to be produced by most marine algae and is a major component of the marine sulphur cycle. The majority of research to date has focused on the production of DMSP and its major breakdown product, the climatically important gas dimethylsulphide (DMS) (collectively DMS/P), by phytoplankton in the open ocean. A number of functions for intracellular DMSP (DMSPi) in phytoplankton have been identified and the cycling of DMS/P appears to be critical for ecosystem function. However, mechanisms for the production and release of DMS/P in the coastal ocean are poorly understood, despite the region’s economic and ecological importance. Coralline algal habitats (e.g. maerl beds, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, kelp forests) are distributed throughout the coastal oceans worldwide. Their three-dimensional structure supports high biodiversity and provides numerous services, generating considerable economic wealth. DMSPi in coralline algae is known to be high, thus coralline algal habitats may be critical components of the coastal sulphur cycle. This research aimed to improve our understanding of the production of DMS/P by coralline algal habitats by investigating (1) natural spatiotemporal variation and (2) the influence of environmental pressures. This was achieved through a number of laboratory and field-based studies, utilising modern and well-established techniques. The first objective of this research was to better understand the photosynthesis of red coralline algae (Chapter 3), as the algal precursor to DMSPi is methionine, a product of photosynthesis. The photosynthetic characteristics of coralline algae exhibited acclimation to changing light conditions (e.g. over a diurnal cycle or between natural and static lighting conditions). Further, for the species tested, coralline algae are often subjected to light-saturating natural conditions, therefore requiring efficient photo-protective mechanisms, which may include DMSPi regulation. On a global scale, DMSPi in coralline algae may decline with latitude, reinforcing the role of DMSPi as an antioxidant (Chapter 4). At smaller spatial scales, DMS/P production, release and recycling mechanisms were apparent in a number of habitat types (Chapter 4). A strong seasonal trend in DMS/P was also observed at a Scottish maerl bed, driven by water temperature and cloud cover (Chapter 5). Annually averaged DMS and DMSP concentrations were 230% and 700% respectively higher than the open ocean, highlighting the potential importance of the coastal ocean in the marine sulphur cycle (Chapter 5). The influence of environmental pressures (decreased salinity, variable pH and grazing) on DMS/P production by coralline algal habitats was examined (Chapters 6 – 8). In agreement with the phytoplankton literature, a chronic, but not acute, reduction in salinity led to a significant decline in coralline algal DMSPi concentrations and a sinking of the surface epithelial cells but no apparent impact on photosynthesis (Chapter 6). In the naturally variable tropical reef environment, calcifying algae continually regulated DMSPi concentrations in response to the diurnal cycling of carbonate saturation state (Chapter 7), suggesting that DMSPi may be enhanced under low pH regimes to compensate for enhanced oxidant production. Under low pH conditions, cracks were observed between the surface epithelial cells of coralline algae, potentially allowing DMSPi to leak from the cells (Chapter 7). In the field, grazing by urchins appeared to facilitate the release of DMS/P from kelp in coralline algal habitats (Chapter 8). In the laboratory, DMSPi in coralline algae increased in response to chemical cues from grazers rather than direct grazing activity, as had been previously proposed. Prior to this research, little information was available on DMS/P concentrations in coralline algal habitats. The marine sulphur cycle may impact climate regulation and ecosystem function on a global scale. This research provides a comprehensive source of information on the importance of coralline algal habitats in the marine sulphur cycle by examining natural variability and potential changes in response to environmental perturbations. This work will form a baseline for continued research in this field, investigating, for example, the impact of multiple stressors on DMS/P production, release and recycling in coastal marine habitats.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This study is of the reading reception and practice line of research of the graduate literature program of the University of Brasília. It seeks to analyze the works of Cora Coralina, a writer from the Brazilian state of Goiás, treating the contemporary themes which permeate her work, so as permit reflecting upon and overcoming these theme’s concerns. It also proposes to contribute to the practice of critical reading, reflecting upon and valuing the woman, poet and human being; let it be a reference to face discrimination, whether linguistic or otherwise. It’s not enough to enjoy reading Cora; one needs to deepen one’s understanding of literature and literary theory to understand and decipher the poet’s poetic universe. Beginning with the primitivism of her verses, we analyze the various voices which echo throughout her work, connecting them to dialogism, metaphors, similes, polyphony and intertextuality. Maybe the reflections pondered here may facilitate broadening the readers’ literary universe.

Abstract: The historic research investigates the invention of Cora Coralina as Monument - Woman, analysing speeches, agents and institutions which' dispute the production of hegemonic biography: the autobiography weaved by the poetess, the memory build up by the Casa Cora Coralina Museum exhibition, the biography written by Cora Coralina's daughter and the subterranean memory engender in Goias. The conception of Cora Coralina as a monument representing the memory's artisan and guardian, Goias emblematic symbol, constitutes one of the strategies for the instituition of this city as historic and tourist. In the process study, I highlight the role of Institute of National Artistic and Historic Heritage and the Vilaboense Organization of Arts and Traditions, scrutinizing the discursive net which establishes the senses and meaning for the past signs written in the urban materiality

Abstract:
The translation of names is a topic for discussion within many fields, no less so within translation studies. Furthermore, the translation of proper names in children’s literature is a topic with on-going changes. There is a divide between those who believe that the names should be translated into proper cultural equivalent and those who believe it is time to have faith in children being able to handle foreign names. That is what this study will focus on. Approx. 15 names from seven children’s books from 1865 to 2011 were studied to conclude that there seems to be a greater faith in children’s ability to handle foreign names. Three languages were compared English, Spanish, and Swedish with the majority of the 337 names studied being kept in their original format, with spelling intact.

This work deals with a socio cognitivist point of view of the Critical Analysis of the Speech and it´s subject is the construction of a myth by the speech from the inter relationship of the categories society, cognition and speech. The general objective of this work is to contribute with studies of the mythic construction of Cora Coralina. It´s specific objectives are: 1) to examine the mythic construction of Cora Coralina by the poetic s work r; 2) to analyze the way how the speech of the literary criticism in the journalistic media has been using the auto representations of the author to represent her publicly; 3) to verify how the social context, the cognitive context and the speech context are related and became representatives of the way how the speech is used in the social, cognitive and speech dimensions; 4) to explore the imaginary complexes of the discursive textual representations. The research is justified because the studies realized about Cora Coralina don´t treat, until this moment, the mythic constitution in a systematic way to make evident how the myth may be found in the discursive formulation, articulating individual and social perspectives. To deal with that we have chosen our theory and methodology foundation in the socio cognitive perspective of the Critical Analysis of the Speech, and the Theory of Contexts of Teun A. van Dijk (2012). We have also elected the phenomenological precepts of Merleau-Ponty and the theories of the multi-store model of memory, as a theory base. It means that our focus is to make a study of trans-discipline with the objective to build it´s own theory. The methodology procedure is analytic-theoric and follows these steps: 1) the selection of a corpora and the selection of texts made by two different materials: texts of the author and texts of the literary criticism and publicity; 2) the identification, in the author´s texts, of discursive centers in each phase that composed the narrative way of the heroes; 3) the exam of the contextual categories of the discursive ethos made from these focus; 4) the subdivision of the critical texts in two groups they came before the public projection of the name of the author, and they project her name in the local and national levels and they have identified and discussed the ideological positions that guide their evaluation; 5) the identification and the verification, in the texts that project the name of the author, from the inter-text and the inter speech and the systems of beliefs that allow the mythic construction of the image of Cora Coralina. The results show that: 1) the myth construction of Cora Coralina has a way that is linguistic identified by the author herself and has a speech way that is institutionally realized by the others; 2) the mythic construction by the discursive ethos transforms Aninha in Cora Coralina, that constructs is constructed connected with the city of Goiás; 3) Cora Coralina´s myth traduces the social wishes of re-signify the social papers of elderly, women and local cultures which compose Brazilian society

Abstract:

This thesis examines and exposes the active student life of 1947 Newcomb College graduate Coralie Guarino Davis. Through the analysis of her diaries, I examine both the academic and social structure of Newcomb as a coordinate college and its effect on students in the 1940s as well as social and cultural events such as World War II and Carnival. Davis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree that enabled her to work professionally in the art field and briefly as a Carnival designer. During her college education, Davis also experienced World War II. Davis and other students aided in the war effort through fundraising, experienced war rations, and anticipated the Allies victory. She also participated in Carnival as a queen of her krewe, the Elenians, in 1947. The exhibit is derived from her diary writings and presents an example of the typical Newcomb student experience during the 1940s in regards to education, the war, and New Orleans social events. Both my research and exhibit work to bridge the gap on Newcomb College history during World War II and enhance the scholarship on women in higher education and in New Orleans during the decade.

We sought to analyze the representations of the city of Goiás in the work of Cora Coralina, with the purpose of discussing how the city is represented in her work and how it dialogues with other representations of the city of Goiás, among them, those built by regional, as well as architecture and urbanism historiography. The paper proposes to explore the potential of the concept of representation, coming from the field of Cultural History, in articulation with references of local historiography and literary theory, and thus going beyond the morphological characteristics of space, encompassing urban social practices. We expect to consider the subjectivity expressed in the poetic dimension for a renewed analysis of the city in question, investigating how the representations build images and bring us elements for the understanding of the various space-time dimensions of the city. We privileged analysing the poet's first published book, Poemas dos becos de Goiás e Estórias mais (Poems of the alleys of Goias and more stories). The author presents us the city of Goiás very particularly from the common spaces and characters that give life to ancient stories. Her poetic representations create a city shaped by personal and collective memories, in which different temporalities overlap and urban spaces deprived by traditional analyzes, such as the alleys, become fundamental to apprehend the city life.

The theme of this research is the city as a reference in the creation of three Brazilian poets of modernity, Manuel Bandeira, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Cora Coralina. From this place that presents itself and its subjectivity, and the individual’s uneasiness from an objective and collective reality. Based on individual and collective’s memories and in the autobiography the poets build images of their cities and then rebuild them into words. The main objective of this research is to comprehend how the hometowns representations of our authors, Recife, Itabira, and the City of Goiás are arranged, and subsequently, to establish between them the resemblances, the confluents and the divergent relationships. In our work, we propose initially to rescue some of the lyric poetry’s theories, the image and the representation and, through the powerful lines and trends that are acquired with modernity. Then, we articulate a thought about the city and its relationship with literature, modern poetry, memory and autobiography. The city is analyzed as much as in its physical and geographical aspects, as the human, represented by those who inhabit this space. The poets choice regarding the subjects, spaces and beings that compose his poetry, related to the moment lived by them, are considered with the purpose to understand the tools and means used by Bandeira, Drummond and Cora to represent the cities where they were born, and raised during their childhoods.
The project re invented the tourism in the city of Goiaz seaches to promote the revitalization of the use of the House of Cora Coralina in way to contribute with the sustaining social cultural and economic of the local turism. In the first moment it established one description of the patrimonial politics along the history which made possible a critical analysis of the same ones how much to the intervention in the city The verification of the local tourism phenomenon gave a oportunity for the elaboration of a diagnosis of the tourist system, searching to identify the available cultural and natural resources or potential for the tourist consumption, the tourist infrastructure of support, equipment and services and the profile of the visitors who frequent the City of Goiás. In this procedure they Identified management problems evidencing the necessity of (re) evaluating the tourist system, giving potential offers from the existing tourism - the traditional one, in the previous organization and integration of the tourist experiences. Finally a revitalization plan was elaborated that contemplated initially the analysis of the use of the House of Cora Coralina in the indentification of programs, projects and activities relating them with the tourist questions. In this exercise it perceived that two programs of the house museum were on directly with the strategies of this project: Rescue and Promotion of the Incorporeal Patrimony and Diffusion and Patrimonial Education, the incorporeal category as motivador element of the envolvement and participation of the community in the management of the local tourism, and potential of the attractiveness, as well as the strenght of the image of the tourist destination in its promotion and spreading. In the incentive to the formatting of products and tourist services, it created the program Poetical Tourism, in the promotion to the creative tourism, literary, gastronomic tourism and of nature.

Abstract:
Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are commonly associated with healthy reefs and play an important role in benthic systems by guiding settlement of many habitat forming or ecologically important organisms, including corals. However, the ability of CCA to induce coral settlement is not ubiquitous among CCA species. Corals exhibit settlement preferences for certain CCA species. These preferences demonstrate the capacity of coral larvae to discriminate among CCA species and raise the question of the mechanisms involved. Despite the enormous variety of CCA species on coral reefs, little is known about the diversity of their associated chemicals and microbes and the ecological role of these compartments, notably for coral recruitment. Chapter 2 of this thesis investigated the microbial and chemical composition of six CCA species, which occupy different ecological niches on the coral reefs of Moorea (French Polynesia), and how these two compartments (i.e., microbial and chemical) relate to successful settlement success of Acropora cytherea larvae. Results showed settlement was highest on the cryptic CCA species Titanoderma prototypum and that practically no larvae settled on exposed CCA species. While all CCA species had distinct metabolic fingerprints and contained high metabolic diversity, the metabolomic diversity and richness of T. prototypum were significantly higher than those of the other CCA species. T. prototypum also hosted a significantly higher bacterial diversity than the other CCA species, and contained a higher abundance of bacteria that potentially produce antibacterial compounds. The presence of these bacteria could inhibit coral pathogens, which in turn could enhance the survival of coral settlers. Thus, coral settlement is a complex process of biochemical communications between CCA, their associated microbial surface communities and coral larvae. Despite widespread acceptance that CCA positively influence coral recruitment success, there are no experimental data on the effects of CCA species on late post-settlement survival and growth of corals. Chapter 3 tested the impact of four CCA species from two habitats (exposed and subcryptic) on the survival and growth of Pocillopora recruits. CCA had a contrasting effect on the survival of coral recruits depending on habitat and recruit size. In subcryptic habitats, CCA can reduce the survival and/or growth of coral recruits via direct competitive overgrowth, while, in exposed habitats, they can enhance coral recruitment by alleviating competition with turf algae. Importantly, this study demonstrated that not all CCA species are beneficial to the survival and growth of coral recruits and that there is considerable variability in both the outcome and process of competition between CCA and corals. Chapter 4 and 5 focused on investigating whether two environmental stressors, ocean acidification (OA) and hypoxia, respectively, impact the coral-CCA association by disrupting larval settlement behavior and recruitment of two coral species (A. cytherea and A. pulchra) on an otherwise preferred and beneficial CCA species (T. prototypum). Larvae of both coral species avoided bottom exploration and settlement in low pH environments. They avoided bottom exploration in reduced oxygen environments and settled on T. prototypum fragments only in oxygen rich environments, with settlement rates increasing exponentially with oxygen concentrations. These results indicate that low oxygen and low pH areas can negatively influence coral settlement success and that oxygen and pH act as chemical cues for coral larval orientation and settlement. This thesis aids to better understand the role of CCA, micro-organisms and chemicals in the fine-scale dynamics of coral recruitment now and under future ocean conditions. It highlights that CCA-coral interactions are complex processes that are likely mediated by chemicals and microbes and these interactions can be affected by changing environments

Abstract:
The present research analyzes the approach of the Geography teaching in one of the basic concepts of that science, the \'place\'. Thus, we sought to understand how that concept could be learned by the 6th grade students of the Alcântara de Carvalho School, Jataí / GO, relating the geographical scientific concepts and the daily knowledge of these students. Our objective was to understand how the poems of Cora Coralina, a poet from Goiás, could contribute methodologically to the contents of Geography in the State of Goiás in Basic Education, specifically those that characterize the understanding of the \"place\". Based on this, the analysis is divided in four chapters, the first chapter is a discussion about the theoretical reference on the Geography teaching and place in the context of geographic education; The second one is, an understanding of the relational possibility between Geography and literature, analyzing the use of poetry in school, and specifically the poems of Cora Coralina and the place; The third chapter was aimed at verifying the contextualization of the concept of place present in the Goiás teaching material (Goiás Referential Curriculum - Geography and adopted textbook); The fourth chapter is about our proposal for better understanding the \"place\", using the teaching sequence methodology that conceives teaching as a construction process, not a finished product. We prioritized in this sequence the use of two poems of Cora, \"Minha Cidade\" and \"Jabuticabal II\". We emphasize our methodology on the development of the teaching sequence, with the problematization of \"place\" theme and its attributes. For this we developed: previous activities about the students\' knowledge of \"place\"; written activities, musicals and drawings about the Brazilian savannah that they know; activities on the two selected Cora Coralinas poems and we finished the sequence with the poll about what has been learned. This thesis has shown us that the teaching sequence differs and extrapolates the action from the lesson plan itself. The teaching sequence presupposes dynamics, interaction, and problematization among the subjects in the classroom, providing a reflexive action on the pre-conceived concepts and now problematized and re-signified after development of the applied teaching sequence. The junction between teaching sequence and Cora Coralina\'s poems were teaching strategies that enabled the knowledge at school, they led these students to rethink their places as a lived and learned daily life as individual and collective experience.

Abstract:
Intertidal macroalgae endure stresses associated with submerged and emerged conditions on a daily basis. Differences in physiology at high tide, low tide, and during recovery underlie spatial separation of species along the shore. Tidepools provide refugia from physical stresses associated with the low tide, and species with low stress tolerance may be restricted to these habitats. Species that survive emergence employ physiological and morphological strategies to survive exposure to pseudo-terrestrial conditions. I explored how tidepool and non-tidepool macroalgae respond to and recover from intertidal stressors, such as light, temperature, and desiccation. I investigated whether differences in physiology could explain differences in habitat distributions. To answer these questions, I explored the physiological responses of the coralline algae, Calliarthron tuberculosum (Postels and Ruprecht) E.Y. Dawson and Corallina vancouveriensis Yendo, to simulated tidal conditions. Calliarthron is restricted to tidepools, while Corallina can survive emersion during low tide. First, I documented physiological differences between the two species at high tide. Corallina performed similar to a high light adapted plant, while Calliarthron’s performance resembled that of a low light adapted plant. Surprisingly, their pigment composition did not differ, suggesting that both species are able to harvest light similarly but that other metabolic processes are at play. Second, I compared morphological and physiological strategies employed by Calliarthron and Corallina to resist stress during low tide. I found differences in the physiological responses of the two species to increased light and temperature, two chief stressors present in the tidepool microhabitat. Unlike Calliarthron, Corallina exhibited high tolerance to increasing water temperatures and was more effective at resisting desiccation via morphology. However, neither species photosynthesized in the air, regardless of hydration level. Finally, I quantified recovery upon the return of the tide. Both species recovered from warm tidepool temperatures. However, only Corallina recovered from the combination of temperature and desiccation stress associated with emergence. This study describes the variation in physiological performance of two intertidal macroalgal species during the tidal cycle, and documents several morphological and physiological strategies employed by species to survive stresses associated with low tide. Results help to explain the habitat differences between the two species.

This study aims to review the document that registers the tipping of the town of Goias as World Heritage O Dossiê de Goiás, and its blatant linkage to the poet Cora Coralina, an odd character who perfectly characterizes how it is to be born and raised in Goias. Cora's poetry, while expressing the memory and identity of Vila Boa inhabitants, served as an argumentative basis in the preparation of this dossier in what concerns the town original aspects as an authentic representative of the Brazilian colonial period, and in which simplicity and ancient customs remain. The house of the poet has become a symbol of Goias. The poem which praises it more, Goiás, minha cidade, was used on the front page of the dossier in a clear demonstration of this remarkable woman s strength, as well as her power in the local culture. This written account determines the persistence of Goias over the centuries and justifies its importance for all people through the defense of its conservation and the resultant need to preserve the architectural site.

Abstract:
Magister Scientiae (Biodiversity and Conservation Biology)
To further investigate the strength of the association and the relative advantages of the association to both organisms, several manipulation experiments were set up. A cage experiment set up in the shallow subtidal zone showed that the coralline survived equally well without the winkle and did therefore not require the winkle or its empty shell for survival. A second controlled laboratory aquarium experiment was designed under both fluorescent (rich in blue light) and incandescent light (rich in red light) to ascertain whether the coralline had a preference for O. sinensis over the similar O. tigrina. This experiment was inconclusive as no recruitment was obtained under either of the light regimes. A third laboratory experiment was designed to determine whether the extra coralline weight had any possible advantage to the winkle, particularly against predation from the rock lobster Jasus lalandii. Results suggested that there were no apparent advantages to the winkle bearing the extra coralline load as adult O. sinensis bearing the coralline alga (3.7 ± 2.2 winkles 24hr-1) were equally prone to predation than those lacking the coralline (2.3 ± 1.9 winkles 24hr-1) (p = 0.184). Observations suggested instead that the convoluted nature of the coralline may indeed have promoted predation. We ultimately deduced that the high occurrence of the coralline on the shells of O. sinensis was probably due to the substantial overlap in the niches of the two organisms. This conclusion was supported by the high densities of juvenile O. sinensis combined with the high percent cover abundance of the coralline in intertidal rockpools. Understanding sexual reproduction in coralline algae as well as the life cycle of the winkle, ultimately provided insight into the postulated life cycle of this coralline-winkle association.

The aim of this study was to document the intertidal and shallow subtidal species of non-geniculate coralline red algae from the South Africa south coast. The main emphasis of the study are encompassed in four research chapters and one concluding chapter focusing on: 1) the documentation of the non-geniculate coralline red algae occurring along the South Africa south coast; 2) revisiting the Leptophytum-Phymatolithon complex in order to resolve the taxonomic status of species previously ascribed to the genus Leptophytum from South African; 3) starting to prepare modern monographic accounts of the higher taxa; and 4) the production of updated keys to all the currently recognised taxa of non-geniculate coralline algae for South Africa. Although nowhere near complete, here we present our findings and report on the current biodiversity status of the non-geniculate coralline red algae after a further four years of extensive sampling.

Abstract:
Climate change is progressing rapidly and is causing shifts in ecosystem function, species distributions, biodiversity, and abundances worldwide. In this thesis, I explore the physiological and biomechanical responses of red algae in multiple life history stages to climate change. In Chapter 1, I introduce the looming threat of climate change, and some of the forces driving ocean acidification. I introduce my study system and my study species: rocky intertidal ecosystems and articulated coralline algae. I also describe potential differences in responses to ocean acidification based on life history stage. Finally, I give an overview of my dissertation and objectives. In Chapter 2, I investigate the effect that ocean acidification may have on spore stages of red algae. Under reduced pH, I document a reduction in spore settlement of both Pterosiphonia bipinnata and Corallina vancouveriensis, and weakened spore attachment in C. vancouveriensis. Results demonstrate that ocean acidification can negatively impact macroalgal spore adhesion in both calcified and non-calcified algae, but in different phases of their spore adhesion process. In Chapter 3, I explore the effect of elevated pCO₂ and temperature on the growth, calcification, and material properties of two species of articulated coralline algae. I found that increased temperatures and reduced pH were found to negatively affect growth rates of these two species of coralline algae. On the other hand, increased temperature and reduced pH had little influence on the amount of calcium carbonate in the intergenicula, and also had minimal effects on the biomechanical properties. In Chapter 4, I explore the amount of natural variability of chemistry in tidepools and attempted to relate chemical differences to differences in Corallina vancouveriensis growth, calcification, and biomechanics. In general, I found that organisms within tidepools greatly alter the chemistry of the surrounding water, and these changes are larger in magnitude than what is predicted for global climate change. I also found that, despite extreme changes in chemistry during low tides, C. vancouveriensis was still able to grow all year long.

This research intends to show two visions on the space of the city in the poetry produced in Goiás. For such, will be boarded Poems of the alleys of Goiás and hystory more (1965), of Cora Coralina and Poems and chose (1953), of José Décio Filho. A survey of the poetical images and the used linguistic resources in poems will be made, with the objective to evidence the look that each poet launches on the similar space that involves them - the city. They are about looks that if they sharpen with the aesthetic modernist and that they are thematically convergent for sending to the city. In this direction, it will be looked to point out the constituent relation of the poets with the cities sung in its poetry. The city as symbol and place of meeting of the poets, not only exerts a species of allure in the goiana poetry, but also in Brazilian literature e, for this status, it appears as determinative agent of the signification of poetical literature. Thus, the priority of this work is in improving the analysis of the poetical texts considered from the poetical one of the space, Gaston Bachelard. Beyond taking loaned concepts of geography by means of studious as the geography Milton Santos and Yi-Fu Tuan. Amongst others some speeches on the critical space, texts Other spaces (2001), of the French theoretician Michel Foucault, Spaces and its expansions (2007) of the literary critic Brazilian Luis Alberto Brandão and Introduction to topoanálise, of Ozíris Borges Filho (2007) will also be used as authorized of this study.
