Between the years 850 and 859 forty-eight Christians were decapitated for offences against Islam in Córdoba, the capital of the Islamic Umayyad dynasty in Al-Andalus, Spain (756–1031). The majority of those executed had deliberately instigated their own deaths by making derogatory comments about the Prophet Muhammad, a known capital offence. The calculated nature of their behaviour, in action against rulers considered by their contemporaries to be fellow monotheists, and without the supernatural support of widely accepted miracles, strained the already fractured Christian community. Abstract The results of a comprehensive study of drinking water consumption in Córdoba, Spain, are presented in this paper. Annual, weekly and daily demand patterns have been estimated using 5-year water supply and billing data. Unaccounted-for water has also been analysed, obtaining useful information for both urban development planning and water distribution system modelling. This work may serve as a reference to cities whose size, population and other features are similar to those of Córdoba.

Abstract:
Confectionery sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has been cultivated in Spain for many years in small vegetable gardens for self-consumption, and this has created a vast genetic diversity of local landraces. The objective of this research was to assess variation in seed quality traits in a germplasm collection of Spanish local landraces of confectionery sunflower. Seed weight, kernel percentage, oil content, fatty acid composition, squalene, tocopherol and phytosterol contents, and tocopherol and phytosterol composition, were analysed in 137 landraces grown for 2 years in Córdoba, Spain. This work analyses new climate data on Southern Spain during the period 1792–1808. The data source is the periodical Correo Mercantil de España y sus Indias (Mercantile Mail of Spain and the Spanish Indies), which published weekly summaries of the weather conditions in Spain over this period. The study focuses on the southern provinces, providing 2788 new records, some of them corresponding to areas with no previously recorded data (Córdoba, Jaén). The analysis indicates the predominance of cold and dry winters, cold and wet springs, warm and dry summers, and variable autumn conditions, cold a
