Shorter, Edward, and Max Fink. Karl Kahlbaum. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190881191.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1874, Karl Kahlbaum, a German psychiatrist in an obscure private hospital, pulled various symptom pictures together into a single diagnosis: “catatonia.” Kahlbaum had earlier pioneered the modern classification of illness with his concepts of course and outcome as demarcating the various disease entities. He thought that, similar to neurosyphilis, catatonia had a common cause and common clinical course but, unlike neurosyphilis, often a relatively benign outcome. He believed the illness progressed in fixed stages. At the same time, Kahlbaum’s associate, Ewald Hecker, described madness in young people (“hebephrenia”), which became the forbearer of “schizophrenia.” Kahlbaum’s ideas were not immediately accepted: there was a core of true believers, but many psychiatrists in the Atlantic community did not readily take up the diagnosis and remained skeptical that Kahlbaum had done anything other than repackage familiar symptoms in a new and unfamiliar box.

Abstract:
The catalogue entries are the central core of this book and form the official published record of the collection of marine chronometers at Royal Museums Greenwich. Every entry includes highly detailed data on that instrument, including prose descriptions of the box, the dial, the main movement and the escapement, balance and jewelling. A commentary then interprets the descriptions if necessary, and a history section records all the known facts about the life of the instrument. A tabulated technical section completes the entry with extensive numerical and dimensional data on the movement. Preceding the first entry for an instrument by a given maker, is a biographical section material on that particular maker. All entries are illustrated with at least two photographs, some many more, and may include explanatory line drawings where there are details of particular interest.

Glebbeek, Arie, and Els Sol. The Evaluation of Reemployment Programs: Between Impact Assessment and Theory-Based Approaches. Edited by Ute-Christine Klehe and Edwin van Hooft. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199764921.013.020.

Abstract:
In spite of a much improved labor market, the outcome of a leading evaluation report on reemployment programs in the Netherlands turned out negative. This result might be due to limitations of the evaluation method used by the researchers, who had to content themselves with a nonexperimental approach. Currently, for many evaluation researchers, the experimental method stands out as the superior design, especially when combined with a meta-analysis over several trials. We show, however, that experimental evaluations do not solve the uncertainties in this field. Meta-analyses of evaluation studies in Europe and the United States produced strikingly mixed results. Efforts to trace their diversity to variations in reemployment programs have not been very successful. This is mainly because of the “black box character” of many experimental evaluations, which offer little information about the content of the programs. Following “realistic evaluation,” we argue for a focus on the theories behind these programs in evaluation research. To this end, reemployment services are depicted in twelve core (mediating) mechanisms.
